uknowme, 04 Feb 2021Yes i understand you as i also sony fan .... But stop cheating yourself.
Sony sales is goi... moreI never said they aren't going down, I said we should stop to consider low volume as a failure as sometimes it is actually planned.
If you mean they should make different type of devices, meaning some having the typical market trend and other still following their actual design, I totally agree, I literally said that about LG on another comment, in fact they should also work on ways to make different designs and features set for a low cost by basically using a branching out-in solution to reuse as much as possible existing base body and components to make a lot of various phones.
But if you mean they should switch to only follow market trend, heck no, they'd rather disappear, we clearly don't need yet another brand making the market loosing more diversity than the almost non-existing one it already has, only to follow blindly trends that are only selling because there is literally no other options that most, non-techies users would know and choose, as the trending things are literally the most hated, and for good reasons, punch holes and notches are totally stupid, anyone with an objective point of view would agree that it make no senses to remove a part of the display in the middle of it just to get more display, or optical underdisplay FPS considering how despite rumors only applying to Samsung implementation of it, and only prior updates, ultrasonic ones are considerably superior.
The same way Motorola sort of makes a lot of various models with different things, many following trends but with unique combinations nonetheless, and other having their own things like some having a pop up camera, some having the fingerprint scanner on the back, other on the side, and other under the display, is clearly the way to go.
And except for some brand wanting their own identity, like Sony or Apple, there are no reasons, nor no excuses to not do this, making diversity from a mainstream model.
Is it allowing for the maximum profits? Not really.
Is it not profitable? Clearly not, niches also sell, doing only niche isn't really profitable, but using products made for mainstream that can be "repurposed" to make niche, and therefor minimizing RnD and production cost is actually more profitable than only making mainstream things.
But more importantly, it is BY FAR the best option for the customers.
Volume is important, I totally agree, but it isn't the only thing that matter, it isn't even the most important thing, companies like Caviar are a great example of that, and it doesn't only apply to luxury, something like the Thrustmaster MFD Cougar is a perfect example of that where the company make something profitable while perfectly knowing it will not sell tons of them.
A world where only things that can be sold in volume would be a true hell, just stop and think about how many things would be non-existing.
To parallel with the car industry, that is thanksfully not following the smartphone bad model, we would only have PickUp trucks by most brands, either gasoline or electric, same engine tech, the only real difference would be the model power, equipments and quality that would make different prices, rather than a world where you are free to choose what type of vehicle you want and can have a comfortable interior without being mandatory with a high power engine and high price tag.
That's why while a car company like Renault make cars like the Clio and the Megane which are a perfect example of "regular" vehicles, they also made the RS version of them, reusing the base car, they made a sport version that is well appreciated.
We are talking about some special variant like the "Renault Megane R.S. Trophy-R" only produced in 30 units, compared to the 129,000 regular Renault Megane sold in 2019 this is nothing, yet it thankfully exists to break from the monotony of having everything only made if it would sell in the most possible volume.
Diversity is the most important thing, clearly for the users, but for the seller too it has a lot of advantages, and if well done it has little cons.
Something to do with not being able to buy sony phones in Australia
ae86, 04 Feb 2021That's why Playstation need to step in and do something, idk what but they prob can do so... moreAlso, who told you ROG phone isn't doing well?
It might not be selling like iPhone or Galaxy A but no doubt it gives Asus a lot of money.
Anonymous, 03 Feb 2021ROG, RedMagic and BlackShark are bad sellers.
Zte and Xiaomi are much more popular than sony... moreThat's why Playstation need to step in and do something, idk what but they prob can do something.
The Playstaion brand is much more popular than Xiaomi & ZTE combined.
Anonymous, 04 Feb 2021I'm surprise Xperia not died yet with all that same old products Sony will never ever die
One million is a good number .. i thought it will be 1000
Shui8, 03 Feb 2021Mobile division sales worsen each year. Apart from the pandemic, which every other company suf... moreI was thinking this the other day, but realized Sony Xperia is targeting very specific markets as opposed to the worldwide approach. It would be interesting to see how Sony has been doing in Europe or Asia specifically. Perhaps there has been an increase locally while they slowly decrease in USA and India, for example.
AnonD-909757, 03 Feb 2021Am I the only one who consider that 1 millions phones in the holiday season alone is quite goo... moreYes i understand you as i also sony fan .... But stop cheating yourself.
Sony sales is going down and down by the day ... 1millio n later 500k later 250K....
The reason still earn money because they sale more n more expensive to rake in more profit ... but the steam is out soon.
First they must follow market trend. design.... waterdrop notch or punch hole
underscreen finger print sensor
advertise more the strength point compare to competitor.... battery life .... screeen.... fluencyyy.... whatever.... think and do it.....
Also need to focus on volume
If Sony will carefully listen to its forum threads complaints and improvements their kingdom will never vanish! Still best products over all others.
That's because people barely know their phones exist. Let alone the fact they barely put any effort in their phones until these past few.
Anonymous, 03 Feb 2021Makes sense, Sony phones are made for a specific nicheSony phone are just bad, charge high price when they have no business to. They have the best sensors but their software sucks. They completely squandered their unique ability to leverage PlayStation. They don't have the huge supply chains of Samsung and apple so yeah not a surprise but it's because their phone business is struggling.
Juri, 03 Feb 2021That's a shame to see their phones look very nice, super tempted to buy that smaller phon... moreYou cant compared modern aspect ratio smartphone with the older one which has huge bezels all around.
For example, Huawei P40 at 6.1" are a lot smaller than Xperia Z5 Premium at 5.5" size. In my book, modern smartphone that 6.1" and below are considered compact.

Yea really.
I'm a big hater off Apple, even hate the users fans.
But love Samsung but love Sony, more than Samsung so you're a Troll.
Tann Hauser, 03 Feb 2021While still at the stalemate position with mobile market sales numbers QonQ, I am glad to see ... moreActually, based on their financial report, they posted 300% Q4 2020 increase in their operating income as compared to the previous year.
Not sure if my understanding is correct but from their full-year 2020 forcast ending on March 2021, Xperia will give substantial contribution to their operating income albeit relatively small compared to the likes of Playstation. Cheers
Mobile division doing badly has been a long trend honestly in the west there is only Samsung and apple reaping all profits with everyone else making a loss. You have to be a Chinese phone maker taking advantage of the Chinese Market to survive if you're not apple / Samsung.

Am I the only one who consider that 1 millions phones in the holiday season alone is quite good?
Since when you need to be N°1 to be good?
It isn't a competition, the goal is to make profits, not to reach sales records.
It is still hundreds of millions of revenue.
This is on top of Sony being lets aside on many stores and carrier stores.
Here in France for example, out of the 4 main carriers (Orange, Free, Bouygues, SFR) :
Orange sell the 5 II and the 10 II along with the 5 and the L4.
Free only sell the 10 II.
Bouygues only sell the 10 II, 5 and L4.
And SFR is the only one to sell the 1 II along with the 5 II, 10 II, 5 and L3.
And I guess it may be representative of how much, basically everywhere, there is a lack of Sony phones sold.
For example, out of the USA major carriers :
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile doesn't sell any Sony smartphone.
Sony, despite their quality, are expensive, and they aren't targeted at general audience, that's why they still have niche/pro features and oriented things.
Even if they were more open, many people see them as a niche brand as it isn't often that we talk about Sony Smartphones, most customers aren't teckies, and despite they know the brand Sony, and it has a good reputation (AFAIK), it isn't associated enough with smartphones for people to really want one.
Mainly considering that most people buy things out of following trends rather than if they actually like the device or not.
So taking all that into consideration, Sony is doing quite well.
As long as they are making profits, and they have room for growing, isn't it enough?
It is like saying that because the Mercedes Benz G63 AMG 6×6 only saw few hundreds of sale in its lifetime that it is a failure because the Ford F-Series sold over 750,000 models in 2020...
No, it doesn't work that way, sometime only few models are enough, look at the most luxurious Yatch, literally they are unique, only one exemplary is literally profitable.
What count is being profitable, not the number of unit sold, as long as you sell more than you planned, it is a win.
Like people saying the LG Wing is a failure because it hasn't sold a lot, do you really think LG planned to sell 100,000 or more units? Of course not, they probably planned to sell a reasonable number but clearly not that many as it is quite niche, and it probably is not only profitable, but probably also a big success.
Makes sense, Sony phones are made for a specific niche
