skvs, 11 Aug 2013sidebyside reviews of htc one and s4 clearly states that in terms of display quality both s4 ... moredude. samsung has been selling in millions 4 ages now. the display is not even 50% of the S series selling Key. LCDs are gr8 but AmOleds are whay better at least for some. as for what u call a CHEAP plastic is way more durable and lighter than that of sony's.

untill now samsung has dominated sony when it comes to display in phones this time sony has defenitly got an answer and super amoled is not only the display which can produce deep blacks and ritcher colours.UHD tvs of sony has shown the potential of triluminous display.
samsung must better find another gimmick to hold its ground and to sell its piece of plastic crap....
Anonymous, 11 Aug 2013it was indeed. and it did badNot in all aspects.
NHZ, 11 Aug 2013Then why was HTC one screen compared to amoled.it was indeed. and it did bad
Has anyone here seen the display of Sony 4K TV. Fu***g marvellous. Took my heart. I really wanted to have it but very expensive for me to afford now. In future hopefully. Super Sony. Really happy to see Sony doing good. Always loved it. Superb screen quality there in Ultra Z. Sexy beast. Finally a huge phone I could cheer for.
atxray, 11 Aug 2013world display war! 1. triluminos (the best ever) 2. super lcd 3 (good but not the best) 3. ... moresays who? a 10 year old kid. if u know the minimum in technolgy, then shld have known that Amoleds r the most advanced screens, that's why the ultra wasn't compared to an S4 bcz the S4's screen would wipe the floor with the sony's most advanced screen.
world display war!
1. triluminos (the best ever)
2. super lcd 3 (good but not the best)
3. amoled (so bad)
SONY will drop another bomb this time a greater one on sept.4 :))))))))))
Both OLED and LCD have its own strengths and weaknesses,
+ Best contrast ratio currently (thus having wider viewing angle)
+ Better power efficiency when display a image that is primarily black (since OLED doesn't emit light when displaying black colour)
+ True black color for same reason above
+ Better response time (technically, it depends on the display quality too)
+ Future trends, as it is potential to produce a flexible display and can be mass-produced in very low cost in future
- Consumes more power when display a image that is primarily white compare to others
- Poor lifespan (blue light degrade rapidly in few years of use)
- Colour balance issue caused by its poor lifespan (as the OLED material used to produce blue light degrades significantly more rapidly than the materials that produce other colors, blue light output will decrease relative to the other colors of light, thus OEM often slightly over-saturated the display in order to increase its lifespan)
- Poorer outdoor performance compare to LCD as LCD having backlight while OLED don't (but both are bad in outdoor performance actually)
- Higher cost as the technology is still new and not mature in few aspects yet (especially high cost and lifespan issue)
- Rather not suitable for water-proof device as OLED is organic made (Organic LED) and it is afraid of water. (And I guess this is one of the reason why Sony not using it)
+ Low cost (as it exist more than 100 years)
+ Low power consumption (slightly better than OLED overall, especially those newer LCD display)
+ Very little heat emitted during operation, due to low power consumption.
+ Share many same advantages as in LED/OLED (like can be very thin and compact and etc.)
- Poorer contrast ratio/ viewing angle comapre the OLED
- Black level is less accurate than OLED
- Poorer response time than OLED
- Having dead-pixel issue
- Not potential to produce a flexible display
And as for the LCD is poor because it is older, that sounds funny actually. For me, LCD vs OLED are similar to internal combustion engine vs electric motor. The internal combustion engine is introduced since 1860 till now and it is widely used in many areas like car engine, aircraft engine, factory machines and etc. The technology is old doesn't mean it doesn't change since it is introduced, today's car engine is far more fuel efficiency and powerful than the past but are based on the exact same concept of the first one, same as LCD, things is keep evolving/enhancing. While the electric motor is the future, but still yet to be more mature in order to fully replace the existing one, same as OLED.
Samsung is really smart and bold in choosing mass produce OLED display for its high-end smartphone since OLED lifespan issue is solved, as nowadays consumers change their smartphone every 2~3 years (or even shorter) while current OLED display can last about at least 5 years (thus it practical for smartphone display).
And talk about which display is accurate in color reproduction, each OEM have their own set of display setting, while this Sony triluminos display offer wider gamut thus having wider colour range, so it just a matter of personal preference in the end. And in fact none of the current display can ever came close to the "God's setting" - the reality, due to technology limitation.
A big screen allows enough space for a big battery........ I am sure sony makes use of this and puts in a decent battery
shbi, 11 Aug 2013no buddy, everybody knows that even with those settings galaxy s4 cant produce real colours..i... moreevery word is in stone my friend! i don't like amoled screens - they produce unnatural colors!!! the only good thing about them is the blacks! as you said. i do think sony needs to improve at the viewing angles that i'm sure the honami will show major improvement in that.
