It has the features I want in a phone. I can obviously understand why they aren't selling it here. It's too too expensive for me but does anyone here know if an imported model will work here?
Yarbles , 10 May 2025Or people who want a genuinely excellent portable music source without having to carry a DAP a... moreThis was about the 4K screen. Not about the in-built DAC or anything, which actually has a purpose.
Good for Sony, i Like the specs, but I'd rather have a 16:9 waklman with smartphone capabilities (fiio for example) than a long remote controller.
Impossible to tell differences at this size. The other thing is running costs. The higher res screens use much more data. If you watch at 4K on a phone you use 4 times the data for video that a 1080p screen uses, so your data allowance runs out fast. VERY FAST.and therte is no gain at all & the cost to the planet of everyone burying their brains in their screens phones online is just huge.
The ONLY advantage is that if you zoom in on a photo you have taken or downloaded you can see greater detail, as with screens on cameras. These tend to have very low resolution compared to what these days their sensors record. 50MP full-frame cameras usually only have a 3” inch screen that is 2-3 MP in resolution, as we rely more on enlarging the viewfinder image . Modern viewfinder imagfing varies greatly. From 3-9 MP on the latest A7R V Sony. A Nikon EVF and an S1R panasonic EVF use 3.69MP viewfinders as they refresh much more quickly. Same if you game on a phone. HD is PLENTY, refreshes fastest and does not use too much data or drain the battery whilst varying the speed to cope with displaying billions of poixels that you cannot see.
Tested in store years ago with someone with 20/20 vision, it is a fact that at 3metres viewing distance we cannot see any difference in resolution of even a 1080p image at a screen size of less than 37 inches. Food for thought?
Bob the web dev, 11 May 2025Not theory, opened up Google and searched it lol.
Also we aren't talking about print, ... moreSoftware resolution change on AMOLED is just a grouping of subpixels, more smaller groups in 4K or less bigger groups in FHD. All of the subpixels are always lit no matter what resolution is picked in software.
When it comes to DPI just go to your carrier store and play with S25 and S25+ and you will see the difference between 400dpi and 500dpi. You can see the difference as is but if you really want to get convinced set the text size rendering on S25 to be equal to S25+ or get the type as small as you can on both phones but to still be comfortable with reading it. S25 blooms around typeface edges while S25+ is crisp.

Also we aren't talking about print, we're talking about a 6 inch screen roughly 20cm from your face, a ppi of 800+ is beyond pointless. Phones have around 380-500 ppi so are sharper than a 50 inch 4k TV, a 27 inch 4k monitor and a 70 inch 8k TV with 32 million pixels at FHD, not even QHD.
At the same size then yeah you might see a precieved difference (tbh TVs and phones have upscaling techniques relatively good in this day n age so compensates for sup pixels ive read, could be wrong). It's because the 4k Xperia phones ran FHD most of the time and 4k in YouTube and it's own gallery app I think, pixels are probably just not optermised well coz of tensor SoC haha (yay!) sony seem to have gotten that pretty good now 😊
Bob the web dev, 11 May 20254k is pushing around 8.5 million pixels in a diagonal space of what, 6-6.5 inches, it's a... moreLots of theory you got there. AMOLED dpi is not equal to RGB LCD dpi, so those 300-400dpi you mention on AMOLED are no where near close to that exact same range on RGB LCD. Basically Xperia 4K is the only mobile display that can match 1080p RGB LCD display subpixel density.
And yes people can perceive more than 400dpi even in print. You perceive too but you just can't explain unless you know what to look for. 300dpi is just a recommended reference much like 72Hz refresh rate was considered flicker free on CRTs but it wasnt flicker free as 85Hz or 100Hz were much easier on your eyes despite you not seeing the difference.
When it comes to battery 4K Xperia 1V will outlast your Pixel 8 Pro in video playback according to GSMArena battery tests by 4.5 hours but that probably comes down to optimization as Pixel 8 Pro will beat 1V in web browsing by 2hrs. Sony dropped the 4K display to pursue battery endurance and save money as Xperia 1VI is absolute flagship battery champ (if you can stand looking at that crap S23 display). New display is crap compared to previous 21:9 4K in every single way except power consumption.

Also I don't know what software features you think they are removing but here's a list of new features android 16 is bringing to devices:-
Key Android 16 Features:
Camera Enhancements:
Hybrid Auto-Exposure: Offers a hybrid mode for camera control, allowing users to manually adjust ISO and exposure time while letting the phone handle the rest of the exposure.
Precise Color Temperature and Tint Adjustments: Provides more control over color temperature and tint, useful for professional video recording.
Motion Photo Capture: Introduces new intent actions for capturing motion photos.
Ultra HDR Image Enhancements: Expands support for UltraHDR images with HEIC format, improving visual quality and reducing file sizes.
Privacy Sandbox:
Continues to enhance user privacy with the latest version of the Privacy Sandbox, focusing on new technologies to improve privacy and enable personalized advertising.
User Interface and Experience:
Material 3 Expressive: A new design language with a top-to-bottom overhaul, offering greater responsiveness and "action elements" that stand out.
New Quick Settings Panel: Introduces a redesigned quick settings panel for more intuitive access to settings.
Accessibility:
Vertical Text Support: Adds support for rendering and measuring vertical text, primarily for languages with vertical alphabets like Japanese.
Improved Form Field Accessibility: Allows apps to inform accessibility services about required form fields.
Other Notable Features:
Adaptive Refresh Rate (ARR): Provides better support for adaptive refresh rates, improving battery life and performance.
Measurement System Customization: Allows users to specify the measurement system (e.g., metric, imperial) for apps to use.
Live Updates: Enables live updates for Android, potentially reducing update sizes and improving the update experience.
This is from android 15-16 for all phones (will be baked in not determined by manufacturer)
Anonymous, 10 May 2025Never understood hate for 4K but QHD being acceptable. 4k is pushing around 8.5 million pixels in a diagonal space of what, 6-6.5 inches, it's around 800ppi (pixels per inch). 300-400ppi is around the highest amount of pixels on screen that we can precieve (obviously some people might be slightly higher) and dependant on screen size and distance from screen), means you can't really notice the difference unless you're pulling a microscope out to see individual pixels (or having to have your phone screen 1cm away from your eye to notice it).
QHD at around 6.5 inches should have a ppi of about 500-540 so even that has enough pixels you shouldn't be able to see an improvement in quality (on a screen this small and the distance you use a phone).
A 27 inch monitor at 4k is around 160-170 ppi, I think a 4k TV at 50 inches is around 80-90 ppi.
Basically 4k at 6 inches is pointless (pushing 4 times the pixels than other FHD screen phones). This isn't including running it at 120hz aswell, basically goodbye battery and hello overheating and lagging.

Even Samsung and Pixel who promise you 7 years of upgrades are already showing diminished quality in OS upgrades within a second year compared to new devices. Features are being omitted, slow roll out for older devices, upgrades not being optimized for older devices making them slower. Pipe dream but great marketing.

Also I had all Xperia 1 models in the past. I had a chance to compare those phones side by side. Performance wise they are all the same, no difference.
