The iPhones have excellent resale value and continued support from Apple (unlike those who bought devices running the defunct WP 7, 7.5, 7.8), so M$ should reclaim the $200 easily enough.
they did the same with the PS3, get $100 store credit if you "Ditch" your ps3 for an Xbox One. Just buy a ps4 for the same price and you still get to keep your ps3. hehehe :D Although I have to admit, trading an older gadget for a newer one is a good deal

You get almost any smartphone with a 2 year c... moreIt's not desperate; they sure are not going bankrupt :P , they just need to expand their market asap to make it more profitable later, it's a typical marketing maneuver to get more market share.
Remember the android market grew in a similar way, not by selling flagships, but by eroding sales from Apple with dirt cheap phones sold for nothing by samsung and others,... and it was a lot easier back then compared to this brick-solid market of today; apple was only occupying the top, while today you have android phones popping out of chips bags.
