If in mid range phone segment, system with 1-2gb RAM using a 64bit architecture will not benefit much i guess.
I'm not IT genius, but as i know, for x64 PC system, 64bit OS will use more RAM than 32bit OS system when running in same amount of softwares.
Correct me if im wrong. Cost effective, adequate performance and low power consumption will be more valid.

A17 will be mid-range processor "in 2015" as the flagship models will be using 64-bit processors.
Cortex-17 is a slightly modification of cortex-A12. It should consume smaller power compare to cortex-A15.

For a mid range phone this is a awesome chip that will support nearly any game or app out at the moment , u cant want the best from a midrange chipset , take in mind the chipset from the xperia sp 1.7ghz krait with only 1gb ram with a andreno 320 is capable of any app on the market and multitasking and that was a midrange chipset. For all those with negative comments keep in mind this isn't designed to be a powerhouse its made to bring a low cost chipset with adequate performance

Indeed 64-bit ARMv8 is not needed now, as :
1. ARMv7 supports LPAE to address up to 1TB RAM.
2. 64-bit apps will not be common in the near future (As we all know many Windows Apps are still 32-bit although x86-64 CPUs are rolled out many years ago.
3. A53 has less computing power than A9 (or above), and A57 is sth like A15 which has a poor power efficiency.
This Cortex and ARM naming convention is really confusing for a new person like me.
They should use simple naming from Intel.. easier to understand which one is entry mid and high end product level..or at least something like Intel ARK ..like CPU encyclopedia

60% over A9 is still way below modern Krait. And obviously it's going to come out so late. No point to this architecture unless it's more energy efficient than Krait which I highly doubt.

Hence the "midrange"-ness

What is with this confusing name scheme. Cortex A17 and mali t720 sounds like a HUGE upgrade from Cortex a15 and mali t678.
But it is just good mid range stuff.
