I feel like there's a new category of tall and skinny phone coming out this year, that's not quite a phablet, but way bigger than a reasonable size phone. The new HTC One is doing this, the OnePlus One will probably be like this (similar to the Oppo Find 7), the Xperia phones are going this way, the Galaxy S5 is in this direction though suddenly the more diminuitive phone.

I'm not sure what to call it. Phablet in skinny jeans (PISJ)?

HTC really blew it by keeping that huge bezel below the screen, even though the jettisoned the capacitive buttons. The phone could be a centimeter shorter.

I agree, Samsung did not make any significant changes but they are just sticking to a winning formula. Their approach might be seen (from me as well) as too conservative, even driven by scare not to mess things up. But nevertherless it sells enormous amounts and makes insane profits. I think Sony made the biggest step forward from the three, and bear in mind, their old flagship is just 6 months old, unlike their rivals' ones. Sony fixed a couple of issues and presented a more complete, better thought out phone. It looks like an effortless job but it takes some doing behind the curtain, trust me. The Japanese simply are willing to take on any challenge and improve through hard work. Kudos for that.

Meanwhile, it looks like HTC have completely lost their way. What is the huge difference between One 2013/14? Only microSD slot come to mind. The display is bigger but the on-screen buttons take the newly opened space. The camera is the same, the 2mpxl "distance measurement" tool is a bigger gimmick than the HRmonitor, honestly.

Do not misunderstand me, I have used HTC phones and I was a big fan of the brand not too fqr ago. But nowadays they have lost their way completely, that#s my humble opinion.

This sounds exactly like the Galaxy S5 and the Xperia Z2. Please inform me what is so overwhelming about either of these phones compared to their previous iteration?

Is it the exciting heart rate monitor on the S5? WOW!!! Blown away. s/

How about the dual front facing speakers on the Z2? Oh wait, I think ive seen that on another phone before.

It must be that new fingerprint scanner on the home button? Nope. Seen that before. Seen it implemented waaay better on a phone last year.

The Z2 finally has a screen worthy of a flagship phone?? I mean they had to improve the worst screen on a flagship phone made the last 3 years.

So,..... the S5 added a fingerprint scanner, a heart rate monitor, upped the camera to 16mp, and became ip57 certified.

And,....the Z2 added front facing speakers, 3000mah batter, added 3gb of RAM(very welcome and should be standard on all 2014 flagships), and improved the screen(if you can call that a feature).

That being said, I agree that the HTC One 2014, is underwhelming as well. But I do understand that year after year, it becomes more difficult for a new phone release not to underwhelm us due to our unfair expectations.

I believe all 3 are great phones in their own right. No phone is perfect. Lets not overlook the flaws all phones have. You do have the right to say which phone you do prefer however.

I have a slightly different order.

Xperia Z2 = HTC One 2014 > Galaxy S5

OMG this fone only haz 4mp camera ;O omfg!!!
I meanz all we do with oyur phonez is Take picturez :0!!!

even though most of you idiots take less than 1 photo per week and if you take more its 95% of the time for facebook or instagram/snapchat...

the only time your going to need a 5mp + camera is if your blowing it up to bigger than an A4 size...

Bunch of idiots, the s4 had a 13MP camera, but HTC one still won numerous awards including phone of the year 2013, and its rating on here was 2 marks higher than your stupid s4.
nothing matches the build quality of the htc, nothing.it is the most premium feeling phone and best build quality of any phone.
camera is by no means bad nor is it the main feature of a phone... its a phone not a camera...

It drained the battery for a solid 5+% during this 14' long video even though phone wasn't put to some serious testing, video playback, running games etc...
Battery doesn't seem promising...
