Many open air cans i.e Beyer DT880 32 ohm can be driven directly to handphone. I'm always select very good recording source, at least FLAC and U'r rite, hate to it's unforgiving side.
Which Marantz did U use? Old one or new one? If it's old one then it's just a joke, as it's grainy too much.
No, HD650 can't be driven by M8 properly because it's rated at 600 ohm at peak. Generally amps powered by battery/usb won't be enough to drive it properly.
Sumtime I'm using HTC/Samsung paired with HD650 and tube amp. Compared to desktop/portable USB DAC, HTC/Samsung are very far behind.

Today technology faster than everything, those brand couldn't match or incompatible with smartphones.Might everybody got they own sense on sound matter. They got own style on making audio setup. How many of u followed professional audio guidelines to get ur sound??..Mine..Nope.I loved my own sound concept.

For me, I pursue music for it sweetness, so Sennheiser HD650 and tube amp always stay on my desk.

Beats don't suck, it just depends on what kind of music you listen to. Hip-hop music sounds the better on my Beats Pro DETOX Edition than any other headphone I have ever tried.
hTC One M7/M8 :
got powerful audio output. No one smartphones can beat it.No matter how expensive ur device is or even Samsung S5 or LG G3 never beat hTC One M7/M8.
..only for pro user..

but if are metal music lover. Need pure original hardcore or metal like front of concert audio, u can try the beats Tour. With high clarity output sound at least 110db u got as u wish...
if u love to manage by ur own way, better use "poweramp" player and flash custom kernel to get an extra extreme 2nd power amp..mine with M7 using Awei es600(LOTR) 116db audio output..Cheaper earphone but performance same with the beats. i can challenge iOS user to beat my M7 sound 100:1.
True that a built-in headphone amp could be good but I have the HTC Butterfly and the quality is very good. However with IEMs at high volumes, it distorts with slow and loud bass notes (only a few songs it affects). There are already reports of audio clipping at maximum volume on the M8 as well. On my One X+ at max volume, I never noticed such clipping except with Beats audio turned on.
If a headphone amp distorts the bass, what's the point?
As for H/K, the link only shows software settings. It appears to be just an equalizer setting on the Sprint version, nothing about the hardware. I find it unlikely other M8's have different speakers. Perhaps all M8s have the same speakers be that H/K or otherwise.
wow i wonder if the amp is also harman kardon just like the amazing nokia n91.
Anonymous, 10 Apr 2014The sound quality of beats are just suck. Try compare it with offerings from Beyerdynamic, AKG... moreno, they do not suck anymore. you must listen to beats mixr, pro and executive. they all have excellent mids and highs and the bass is punchy but not muddy. at 200 euro nothing is sounding better than beats mixr. no-thing !!! i like headphones wich vibrates on head from bass and i hate flat monitor boring headphones for sound engineers
[deleted post]The sound quality of beats are just suck. Try compare it with offerings from Beyerdynamic, AKG, Fischer audio or other brands. You can get much better sounding cans from the same price range.
