It feels a bit like Microsoft has made a habit of hitting just close enough to the mark that it's easy to imagine just how right they could've gotten things.
After a couple of days with 8.1 on the 520 I've noticed some increase in the lag between apps/tiles being loaded. A minor thing to be sure.
More disappointing is the somewhat sorry state of the Podcast app now split from Xbox Music. Swiping leads to the new screen overlapping on the previous one. There seems to be no option to make only downloaded podcasts appear instead of the default 'all' option. There also seems to be intermittent issues with some podcasts not displaying a subscribe option or not downloading despite being subscribed to. Opening on a rather disorganized 'favorites' screen as opposed to an easily navigated downward scroll of podcasts is just one more needless swipe added to what had become a serviceable podcast listening option nestled into Xbox Music.
Cortana has a bit less flexibility than one might hope, the option to get automatic news updates but not specify preferred sources is a minor annoyance. Serving up a trio of Fox News headlines to an NPR fan is an amusing sort of annoyance. While she's clearly intended to serve the mainstream Cortana is just a hint of herself as she appears in the Halo franchise. Like it or not in America Microsoft is struggling for market share, making due with what I suspect is a fairly long suffering group of consumers who remain hopeful that things will get better. Perhaps a smattering of people enticed by a $70 smartphone as well.
There's clearly a voice behind Cortana but it's not the right one. Whatever amount of money Jennifer Hale might've wanted, whatever effort might've been required Microsoft should've seen to it. I can't really imagine there not being a nice bump in buzz, publicity and all those other terms that marketers seem to love if all the millions of Halo fans out there realized that they could actually have Cortana in their hand.
From 1st Gen Zune until now, I remain ever hopeful that one of these days Microsoft will manage to hit one out of the park, they sure keep swinging away at it.
