After many lines of writing and too much venting you've already reached the proper conclusion: if Android is a flavor of Linux then why the heck shouldn't it be upgradable?

Over and out.

It's 2014 and you're using a 2012 phone!
Do you really think K... moreWho said I was using the S3? I wouldn't use a Samsung device even if they were free...Lol
Well, you clearly have laid it out. The ONLY reason is to see the change of the SW version in "about phone". You should call the CEOs for all the major Android OEMs and let them know they're wasting their time and developer talents since there's no benefit.
You clearly do not understand the difference, nor the advantages of updated software vs hardware.
You're just another Samsung apologist.
Angry Mobile Nerd, 14 May 2014I'm not a genius, I was making a simple observation that there are still a lot of XP users out... moreOf course your not a genius. The fact that you didn't catch the sarcasm points that out.
You have only yourself to blame for this being blown up. Calling someone a "Mo.ron" for asking a straight forward questions isn't the way to foster a civil discussion. You deserved to have what you said torn to shreds.
I want XDA to port 4.4 for LG Su760.because of its current rom is out of date.
Anonym, 14 May 2014AFAIK there is a thing called "Linux" that pretty much voids your whole point. The comment wasn't about Linux, which is what Android is anyway HITH. Try to keep up with the discussion.
Hi Guys!
No more Samsung for me after this!
I will never buy a Samsung mobile phone.

Nothing more. Of course you did a fantastic job of blowing it up into epic proportions. For that, I award you 1 point. That's 2 points now right? Or did I give that other point to the other guy. Oh well, whatever.

Do you really think Kit-Kat will make some huge, monumental difference to the S3? Is Kit-Kat going to make your camera sensors divide to become 16MP or the CPU mutate into a snapdragon 800? Is Kit-Kat going to make the screen become 1080P or grow another .2"? Is Kit-Kat going to double your Antutu score? Most people don't even know why they want Kit-Kat, they just do. And when they get it, all they do is go to the "About Device" section in settings to show their friends "Look, I got Kit-Kat". Guess what? Nobody cares!
*Everyone* here is looking like the glass is half empty and I'm the only one seeing the glass half full. What Samsung has given all you is a fantastic opportunity to buy a new non-Samsung device! How great is that? Really, I mean it.
Sammy must be feel very shame!

Shaggy, 14 May 2014I get that ppl are angry at Samsung for not updating their older top tier devices. I don't kno... moreTouchwiz is bigger, much bigger now that they've added a bunch of new features and functions with the release of the S4 and now S5.
This is why the Kit Kat ROM with Touchwiz won't fit on the SIII, but the Kit Kat OS alone will and the intention was not to go back to the old version of Touchwiz with Kit Kat, but to include the latest version, which they now realize is so bloated that they can't do it.
This is their PR nightmare. I can thing of two alternatives they can do to make things right:
1. Provide the equivalent of a "Google Nexis" edition of Kit Kat for the SIII, without any Samsung UI or applications included.
2. Provide owners with a rebate program to trade their SIII in for a S4, S5 or the latest Note.
Don't be surprised if a lawsuit comes out of this where consumer protection laws are strong, since Samsung (falsely) advertised that they would provide owners of the SIII with an update to the Kit Kat OS.
AnonD-212255, 14 May 2014Wow. Talk about missing the point entirely. When you purchase a PC it already comes loaded wit... moreExactly.
You could go on about interface differences between XP and the new versions of windows and associated dislike/learning curve barrier, cost of upgrading other software and hardware due to incompatibilities, etc, etc.

Well Einstein (I mean, you are OBVIOUSLY the resident genius), a few *minor* differences, that I'm surprised a guy of your genius overlooked. The most important of which is Microsoft charges for upgrades and never says you'll get the next release free. Whereas purchasers of the smartphones are usually told of free upgrades (as Samsung did for the SIII http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9300_galaxy_s_iii-4238.php ), so it becomes a consideration in the purchase.
There are other differences that make your comparison completely irrelevant. With your genius of being able to figure out how to do a facepalm with head between cheeks, oxygen deprivation aside, I'm sure you can figure them out if you think about it a bit.
alexv, 14 May 2014cm11 won't be very stable until it reaches at least rc1... my cm11 s3 mini has still many problemsThe S3 mini NovaThor SoC has been discontinued, it isn't officially supported by ST-Ericsson to run 4.4, so what you are running is an hacked version of CM11 with the last available (and unsuitable) drivers... with the expected compromises that come from that.
