It would be a surprise if Apple wasn't dominating their home market(US). Apple's iPhone carrier subsidy deal was a main factor to their domination. Imagine how many people would buy iPhones(full price) without the US carrier subsidy. IMO many people would still buy it but no way near the numbers today with subsidies.
Isnt weird. USA usually buy their own products. Same with Korea buying Samsungs over Apples.
Carrier based analysis doesn't show the actual facts. Carrier may push a certain brand locked phone even in $0 price tag. Actual battle field is the unlocked sector and that's future too. US people slowly but gradually started understand that Carriers are making them fool by locking them at their contracts....
"Samsung on the other hand, is the top handset supplier in the country."
No surprises about Apple. In NYC at least, they are everywhere and in most people's hand all the time. Not for me though! The Galaxy range is becoming more common, but Apple is by far the most dominant.
I am surprised about Huawei's share. I've seen more Lumias, MotoG, and Nexus5 out there in the wild, but never ever seen one of these.
