Android is still superior enough of an OS that if their default crap bothers me I'll just root. Compared to Apple they're just the lesser of two evils. Windows phones don't interest me in the least, Microsoft is bottom of the barrel IMO.
I like Android very much (not necessarily Google, and I'm one of those Nexus-only guys), but I also don't see this as a sound decision.
Good products are going to be installed no matter what. I understand products EVERYBODY downloads (like GMail, or Chrome) should be bundled, but 20 apps seems too much that aren't really needed by almost everyone. So it smells more like "the IE way" than common sense.
Bad products will only lead to stagnation and user frustration. Google should pursue quality, not bloatware. They have been doing mostly great streamlining their software.
Besides, only a fraction roots their phones. The huge share of user experience comes from people who don't.
Protocol, 27 Sep 2014Oh no. I have got two Android phones and on both of them, there are just too many Google this ... moreWell Google may be going overboard with this, but still its not bad enough to counter the astounding amount of freedom Android provides you. Rooting can easily deal with a 100 apps provided by Google, and even non-rooted devices can disable those apps to stop them permanently.
Agreed, Sailfish is rather new so there is quite less amount of bloatware in it, but it won't provide access to Play Store, and bleeding edge hardware.
I can't stop you from switching, nor do I want to, but I just wish to tell others not to get motivated by this post and switch to something not even close to Android. If he said switching to iOS I wouldn't have even written this reply as iPhones are pretty good too, but Sailfish? Nope.
Miroslav, 27 Sep 2014Windows Phone is only safe place for now.Yeah it's really much safer to have LESS CHOICES of apps........ NOT!
luismfarelo, 27 Sep 2014Time for people to wake up and switch to Windows Phone, where we can uninstall any unneeded ap... moreWow! This is like... You don't like cars because they always come with the wheels we don't want... So go ride a bicycle instead. Har har har!
Google you need to reduce the amount of apps not increase them. There are so many apps that overlap and do the same things, it's really confusing for casual users especially with the way you handle default apps.
ultimateslider, 27 Sep 2014Google apps we actually USE, bloatware from carriers we DO NOT.It will not be a big difference... moreu are absolutely wrong, average joe like me only use playstore, chrome, youtube, gmail and map. other google app beside this is bloatware and keep eating your battery......
Oh no. I have got two Android phones and on both of them, there are just too many Google this and Google that apps that aren't useful for me in any way and that is why I rooted and uninstalled those Google apps which keeps running in the background even after stopping them multiple times and therefore, drains battery and suck your data plan. Since Android holds more market share than any other OS and is currently enjoying the number one spot in the mobile industry, Google, which owns Android thinks everyone will like to have over 20 Google Apps, since there's not much competition as WP 8.1 OS, BB10, Sailfish, iOS aren't getting as much market share as Google's Android. This company is throwing down your throats and it's because of lack of competition. Guess, it's the right time for me to jump ship to Jolla Sailfish.
Already using Nokia 1100 as backup, Looks like switching back would become necessary...
sooner or later we will have to back to phones like nokia 6110 because of that crap serving from os providers.if i pay for a phone €600 i don't wanna have some crapp on that. they should pay us to use this things which mostly are useless. i hope that people stop following those companies like a lambs.open your eyes people, they try to screw us.
tadam, 27 Sep 2014Well, Google better provide a user manual with each and every mobile phone to install a third-... moreusing only playstore and sometimes maps(for checking mail i use my Laptop).
i don't understand , why i need chrome and other uninstallable google sh!t.
And google is going to add more of that...
Anonymous, 27 Sep 2014People always complain bought bloatware from the phone vendors, but I have always thought tha... more"Kick Google Out Of The Equation"??? Then maybe, you should stop using android that GOOGLE DEVELOPED then?? Or anything that they developed for that matter.
you dont even know whats going to be there yet and you already have closed your mind about it? You got a real big problem there.
Seriously people, Google owns Android and allow manufacturers to use it for free for us. We use it for free. Duh?
I don't get it, why can phone just come out with nothing on. Only thing i need on my screen is setting icon, from there i'll download myself anything i need
here coms the bullying once they are on top!
that's why we need to make sure there are more than two competition, or minimum the rule of 3.
Google's services are cutting battery time and taking up memories given user don't root it and turn them off.
Time for people to wake up and switch to Windows Phone, where we can uninstall any unneeded applications.
