This is a smart move by EU but ummm do the states wanna hop on this? It's a saving grace, oh I forgot the states want the money not the economic save.
[deleted post]SE and Nokia are so popular. I am a big SE fan but I dont know how does Samsung sell that much when no one is interested in their phones. just watch Satio vs Omnia HD !!! Satio is so much more popular but again Samsung sells alot (hope this time Satio oversell Omnia HD)
Anonymous, 29 Jun 2009Looks like you people can`t see behind this new rule. Let me explain:
The enswer is in car ... moreIn fact, these news are old. EU made this regula a long time ago (year or more). Don't know why GSMArena put the news that late. But thats not what I wanted to say. EU started to make this regula realy long time ago. Even before Apple could imagine about phone. The mine idea of this regula is resurse saving and green thinking. If you buy a phone withouy a charger, you can save up to 1/5 or even more of box size. So in every truck that delivers a cell phones from countr to countr, can handle for 20% more phones at a time. So less trucks needed to deliver phones, so - less pollution! And pollution is reduced even on manufacturing cost! Plus less garbage, less utilization of old chargers, etc. just think! You don't need a new charger if you stay with Nokia all the time, because it's a waste of resources. Why not to have a standart charger if you migrate from manufacturer to other? Great idea.
PS. About your Apple fanatism. I bet you are from USA. There Apple have an impact on customers, no matter how they acquire that. In EU Apple is usual manufacturer which is lower than LG, Samsung or any other manufacturer.
Finally, two thumbs UP for EU. As you said. Should have been done so years ago.
I don't know, but won't it add to the cost of say low end phones like Nokia 1100 series? I thought making proprietary connectors increased a company's sales coz if we lost a data cable we'll have to again buy it from se noki moto instead of buying a (usu. low cost) generic one? But I think its a real useful decision. No more mess of old data cables!

Look at it like this: you can connect to the computer AND charge your battery at the same time. I used to do it on an old Motorola all the time, it never complained and the battery stayed as good as new.
my phone already has microUSB... HAHAHA Nokia N85, ahead of the game
but that Moto V8 lying around the house has microUSB too.
alex, 29 Jun 2009apple will never do this because their socket is SERIAL and micro usb is not ! meaning some of... moreIf Apple doesn't do that, then their phones will not get EU approval, and lose their market there.
bringing this kind of standard its a better idea becouse we have been having hard time incase your charger is lost or distroyed then u had to buy another one and at times to get the original one you have to sufer so the idea is fantastic.
croatia, 29 Jun 2009this is fantastic , europe always do something to save the planet unlike the US .. hope it wil... more"this is fantastic , europe always do something to save the planet unlike the US .. hope it will start soon.."
...Motorola has been using USB for years, first Mini now Micro.
By making the iPhone 3GS exactly the same size and shape as the 3G, Apple has made sure that ALL accessories will fit, not only chargers they are also one of the only manufacturers that only use one cable, not two or more.
Some phones come with a charger, a data cable and an AV cable.
Maybe everyone should use the Nokia POP port!!
Car kits are being ripped out all over the place.
hi every body, this is me then after years about phones! I can tell you that every change in the way of charger or accessories, will be wellcome because there are so much wastings todays because they don't know how to reduce it, they became to this fantastic position about the chargers. One other thing is that, micro usb is a week port! It's port is creeky some how! I can't tell you but i'm sure that you've feeled it.
Anonymous, 29 Jun 2009This is not about the micro usb but se ditched the micro m2.For the micro sd
very good job. I think the batteries also should be of same size. The ma may very but it is possible to make standard size.
I do not share the enthusiasm, what about charging speed ? What if I do not want to charge maybe already full battery just because I want to connect the phone to the PC ?
I can confirm that Sony ericsson will follow suite. Just as stated in the article it will be products from next year.

Great move? Perhaps, I think miniUSB was a better option as this is far more reliable in terms of the way it's handled, micro usb ports seem to fragile, I always fear i may break it or bend it even though the fit is quite snug within my E71.
Anyhow, THUMBS UP for uniformity even amongst manufacturers.
Nice to have the EU bring similar changes to audio ports, 3.5mm standard for all ;P, something HTC need to take on board, £500/€640+ and no standard 3.5? Come on, Touch Pro 2 owners deserve better, HTC made the XPERIA which somehow sneaked a 3.5mm jack.
Sorry to go off topic ;(
