ak, 13 May 2010GPS is not network based. It is handset feature. Well what it actually means is that for a device with a-gps support, it requires te handset to connect to a network tower to fetch info about the nearest position of the satellite and most of the talemetric measurements are done by the computer connected to the tower. So this releives the phone gps from having to do a lot of work and results in faster and efficient lock on the position. This is the case with phones like 5230. But for devices like 5233 which has no a-gps feature, it still can access the network tower for position info. What this does is that instead of using 3 satellites required for gps positioning, this phone uses three network towers in the closest proximity to triangulate its position. The method is effective but the accuracy is a bit low. It can only give a general position unlike the pinpoint accuracy of a dedicated gps device. It is also subject to the distance between the network towers. The closer the towers, th more will be the accuracy. But this is just enought to find your way using google maps which i have tried and succeeded. I can only give you approximate position. So voice guidance and turn by turn direction are all out of the question. I hope this will clarify all your doubts regarding a-gps and network based positioning.
