This phone is NOT ordinary GSM/CDMA
the 2G part of the phone is GSM and can be used in the rest of the world
the 3G part of the phone is China-brewed 3G (dubbed G3 in china) and can only be used in China.
It's a TD-SCDMA = Time-Division SCDMA.
What's the different with the rest of the world 3G (WCDMA) is, our WCDMA is wide band code-division, whereas the TD-SCDMA is time division just like in GSM.
The TD-SCDMA have it's own benefit over the WCDMA. The phone will not got too hot after prolong use while on the peak hour (a lot of user using the bandwith). Whereas in WCDMA the phone will be hot (just like in CDMA 2000 1x/EvDo/EvDv) with prolong use, especially when the bandwith is crowded (peak hour).
If you had the 3G/WCDMA phone and use to browse a lot, you will notice sometimes the temperature on the phone will rise. This is due to the design of the Code Division system. The phone must open all the package with it's key, and if it can't open it, it discard it because that's mean the package is not for this phone (for other user). This make the code division system will got very hot when a lot of user using it together on the same area. Whereas in Time division the phone is allocated to specific timing, so that it doesn't need to open/discard package.
This is also the reason why 3G talk time is lower than GSM (GSM is time division too).
