Back to the matter at hand, the E51.
The very first thing I intend to do is i... moreThe Nokia E51 uses the Symbian S60 R3 operating system. While the R2 version is seriously plagued by viruses, the R3 version is much more secure than it. And also incompatible with it. (That is, programs - including viruses - for R2 don't run - or even install - on R3.)
There are no viruses for Symbian S60 R3 phones - and even if somebody writes one, it won't be able to spread successfully. (Thats what i've heard)
There are anti-virus programs for S60 R3 phones like ours, but unfortunately i haven't seen any free ones. And, because of the lack of viruses for this environment, paying for one, i think is a waste of money.
but in mine i used F-secure anti virus which i downloaded via the "Download!" application in my phone for free. but its now expired.
other than that i tried Kaspersky. and i didn't find anything special comparing it with F-secure. didn't feel being slowed down or anything. they just auto starts when you switch on the phone and scans for viruses which don't even exist. maybe in future these software could become useful but until now i think its pointless. but then again if you really want one get the F-secure.
the strange lightness is something even i felt when i bought the E51. could be because in the 6300 its says "finished in steel" and in this it says "finished in STAINLESS steel". (LOL)
The phone gets heated very soon especially during VoIP cals and battery gets drained very soon. Since the cover is metal, the heat can be felt very well. Otherwise, very good phone and has all good features and very slim in nature.
I visited the retailer yesterday to check out the E51.
I held it in my hand and it looks slimmer than 6300, even feels lighter and the screen is longer even though both phones have 2 inch screens.
Funny how on paper the dimensions are the same and in reality it's a different story.
Back to the matter at hand, the E51.
The very first thing I intend to do is install an anti-virus app. on it. I was contemplating whether I should go with Kaspersky, Norton or F-Secure. I want one with a small file size and one which uses the least system resources (RAM, CPU etc.).
On Windows PC, Norton is excessively slow and uses a whole lot of system resources so I shudder to even think about installing the Symbian version.
The way I see it, my real choices lies between Kaspersky and F-Secure.
How do you find F-Secure ? Does it hamper system performance in any way ? Is it the fastest of the three I mentioned (providing you have tested all three) ?
Which anti-virus is simply the best for Symbian based on your experiences with Symbian anti-virus apps. ?
In my country, the island of Jamaica...things are on the expensive end. For instance, the 6300 sells for JM$26,154.25 equivalent to GBP£182.48 / EU₤227.82 / US$361.24.
That's just how it is in my country. Regardless of the expense I will purchase the E51 today Friday July 11, 2008.
Don't worry friend. When I get my E51 I will get that chat application and if I have a similar problem like you, I will find a way to solve it and then share my solution with you. I always find a way to solve these problems.
The best phone ever made by Nokia. It never lags. Some of the phones come from china and are very bad and lags a lot. That's why i see so many complaints out here. But try the original one from Finland, you'll be amazed.
Guys, has anyone downloaded the Nokia Chat application and installed in your phone? I'm having trouble installing it...has anyone here got any idea about this? to be precise my problem is when i try to install the "Nokia_Internet_Services_Support_Package_1.05" it wont replace the "Nokia_Internet_Services_Support_Package_1.01" PLUS, i cannot delete the 1.01 manually even. wonder why...
Original_Jamaican, 11 Jul 2008To WINURA: First of all I'm planning on purchasing the E51 today. My retailer got it ye... moreoh god...thats a bit expensive don't you think? i paid US$300 for mine nearly 8-9 months back. i bought mine during a visit to india. the phone is available in sri lanka for about US$400. so what are you going to do? you will have to buy it now anyway is it?
First of all I'm planning on purchasing the E51 today.
My retailer got it yesterday and called me to notify me. The price in Jamaican dollars is $25,450 before 16.5% tax and $29,649.25 after tax which is equivalent to GBP₤208.40 / EU$260.97 / US$409.52. All of these equivalents are based on the final Jamaican price after tax JM$29,649.25.
The dealer tells me that it was expensive for them to get so they can't give me a discount.
Thanx it worked .... wonder why it never worked yesterday .... hmmmm .... blessings of the wise sage ....

anyway i'm using F-Secure anti virus software, Search, Wi presenter, advanced call manager, easy reject which are approved by nokia.
other than that i use Skype, Windows messenger, G mail, DivX player, Google maps, WinRAR, and Yahoo! GO 3.0 on my E51 and haven't affected my phone's performance in anyway. but i don't use more than 2 applications at once.
I've been very happy with me. I wrote a review a while back about it:
i love this phone!!
it one of my few choice before but now I own N82..
design wise, simple and serious yet classy, very attractive, more attractive than N82, size is thin and the keypad is text friendly.
i would have bought it if it has a 5MP camera on it..
maybe they should make an e-series with a 5MP camerac", business phone with a touch of snaps
It's good to know with a smart phone there's usually a solution for factory limitations. However, these 3rd party add-ons (especially if many) can have an impact on more than just memory, RAM too so in the long run your phone will be on the slower side.
I will only ensure that I only get the critical add-ons. I may not have owned a s60 phone before (I owned a Palm phone once) but I know the advantages with the 3rd party apps. That's what s60 mostly focuses on, 3rd party applications, that's why you don't get a fully loaded phone out of the box in comparison to s40 phones.
