Rad-K, 21 Aug 2013i tried all, the result is 'refresh' has been withdrawn from server, so stupid from them, anyw... moreHey, sorry for the late answer. What happened to your mobile is not normal (quite at all). So, you maybe having a "shelf" product.
First of all... you can do any kind of format and will not go back to first edition of belle if refresh is Good installed. So, strange things happened to your device. Are you shore you had belle refresh? Anyways, you can flash it with phoenix. This could be the only solution you have. So, do you know anything about phoenix? http://www.n8fanclub.com/2012/10/re-install-update-flash-firmware-nokia-suite-phoenix.html here is a How To explanation. here is a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNjBYn3sRlI Ignore the first minutes where he downloads a custom firmware. Also, here are 2 more videos to get more info from the method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP6s7EpZX9c. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHhQ7fkyu-Q. There are two ways of upgrading. in dead flash mode or in normal mode. Either way, there is no problem. If you are a beginner, you should go for the normal way. I've done it many times and is a low risk if you know what you are doing, if not, then.... just learn:)). Here you have official belle refresh files without branding: http://www51.zippyshare.com/v/34352294/file.html . BUT, it is a western European firmware and has German language as standard. Also includes: Dutch, English, French, Italian and Turkish. Sorry, i do not have other language files. Navifirm was down, now is up but they ask for money to use it...
MdN, 25 Aug 2013Yeah, surprised you're saving it, but why not. At least I know someone is reading (...and the ... moreStore CD's in a fridge??? No wonder mine deteriorate - too hot and humid, I suppose. Maybe I'll try the fridge for a few cherished ones. So that is what Cloud is about! OK. It's not for me. In any case, I really don't need it. Anyway, I know you won't be offended if I tell you this, but I don't believe you one bit about black metal. I think you were fishing. That's OK. I am into Praise and Worship music - nice simple melodies, simple chords and very uplifting. I like Hillsong so I can now download my favourites and I'll check out "The Illusionist".
Yes, 6 hours of viewing time per GB does make sense to me. Quantifying it another way can help especially if it is an abstract entity in your mind. We do learn by association too.
Stupid me, 25 Aug 2013To Carol & MdN
I think carrying the conversation on memory cards to the DEPTH you have ... moreYeah, surprised you're saving it, but why not. At least I know someone is reading (...and the 27% daily interest people who come to read this soap opera - I'm more famous now than with my music and writings, haha).
Yes, 1GB is around 6 hours in 360p quality (resolution of this phone) but of course some movies in higher quality are up to 700MB (1 CD) or more so it depends on where you want to watch them. Having movies on the phone is good for people who travel to work/school, people who don't have internet or wifi everywhere, and for people who want to see the movie in some other room where there's no computer but there is a better sofa. :-) Also if I want to see 5-6 of my favorite music videos one by one it's faster than searching for them on YouTube.
I store my photos on my PC and on my phone so they are in two places. And when there's enough I burn it on a CD and store it in a safe place (which means, fridge, haha). I don't trust clouds too much, first the privacy issues, then the idea of having my data stored on someone else's territory, just doesn't feel right - and I don't even mean storing illegal things. Other stuff is here and there, but I make a point in keeping the things I create myself, while the things others created can go if I need more space. If you're going to keep things in a cloud there's a free Symbian app called FilesPlus - I might try it some day, but my upload speeds aren't too great. Supports Box, Google Drive, Skydrive, Dropbox, FTP, WebDAV... Whatever that means. :-)
I think you're doing fine. I had to learn it all by myself, by trial and error and by searching on Google. The other day I found that, when I type *#0000* my phone will create a 20MB file called "reserved" in C/private/102072c4 and it can be safely deleted. Off it goes!
Oh, and the best movie you can see on YouTube is "The Illusionist" ;-)
[deleted post]Quite preachy this morning, huh :-)). Just came from one sermon and I'm getting another one :-)). In 10 yrs I'll get it??? Oh! But that requires so much tenacity! By that time I may be in the line trying to make my way through the tiny door! But don't you fret, I am totally comfortable with the way that God made me and the best part is that I can laugh about my limitations. I know my strong points too and I can say that the guy upstairs doesn't make rubbish. Everyone is gifted some way or other and we are called to use those gifts - which you are doing even here. I use mine in a different way. So, sorry I disconcerted you with my frankness.
I'll concede one thing. Maybe I talk too much because you're not the first to tell me that. So maybe I should button up. Actually, I like my pseudonym and won't change it for the world. I probably would not have chosen that, except that I did something "stupid" when I first got my phone and came here in panic for help. So, there is a story (for me) behind that name. I may be slow in electronics, dear, but I am not stupid.
But Carol, I do appreciate the time you took to lecture me because it showed that you are either a caring person or a damn irritated one (maybe a bit of both). So, I'll seriously reflect on what you've said. Let me reiterate that I really appreciated your comprehensive explanation about memory cards slowing down phones and the kinds we can buy. I will definitely take your advice.
Stupid me, 25 Aug 2013Carol & MdN Oh Lord! I'm a nutcase for sure. I think my thread about Gb & Mb & ... moreThe last one wasn't quite a great explanation and had a lot of grammatical mistkes. But is good you understood:). You are welcome. Always remember that what others say is a small part of what you can learn alone. So, experience and make mistakes, this is how you will learn all. By the way, did you managed to install Belle?:p
Carol & MdN
Oh Lord! I'm a nutcase for sure. I think my thread about Gb & Mb & memory card may have been with MdN because I checked back (and saved one or two things as well) and did not come across anything with Carol explaining about memory card. So that explanation was before my time. So Carol, I'm real happy you went through it again! First timers will appreciate it I'm sure and old timers won't mind the refresher because it is really GREAT INFORMATION and I've already copied & pasted it.
To Carol & MdN
I think carrying the conversation on memory cards to the DEPTH you have has really been EXCELLENT!!! People tell you to do this or don’t do that but seldom do you get an explanation as to why and I always find that is important. This is really worth knowing.
The both of you are an unbeatable “team” providing so much valuable information to us. So incredible! I get more information here than my poor brain can assimilate in one go, because as I said, I am slo-o-ow on the uptake and real scatter-brained.
It may surprise you to know MdN, that I do have a file on my desktop for all the info I get from you all, according to topics. It beats back rummaging through the back pages.
Carol, yes, you did talk about the memory on the phone and me putting things on my memory card - and about the GB and MG but not in such depth. Unfortunately, that was before I started my file so I don't have the info saved. I tried to pinpoint the page but abandoned the effort at page 5. Your post today tells it all anyway.
Well, I downloaded my first video yesterday - 225mb Prince of Egypt :-))) and MdN's post set me thinking about how I can visualize the sizes of GB & MB. Well, matching size with time is a good compass for me:
1GB = about 6+ hours viewing time. Not too sure if my maths is right but it is just a kind of a guide. Now that is plenty, yes!!! So 16 GB IS humongous to someone like me. So, yes, you're going to have a spread of stuff including photos so you just have to be reasonable and monitor and manage your imports etc. Store photos on your PC or flash drives or even up in the Cloud. I have to explore that one, just for interest sake! Anything but use a 64GB memory card.
A 1½ hour movie = 225MB roughly. So you can get four movies for 1GB with space to spare.
I would imagine that people on limited data and who don’t have wifi at home find places with Wifi (eg. Malls, libraries, whatever) and download their movies there and watch them later. That is certainly more economical. Hm, don't know when I will get around to watching my movie!
MdN, 24 Aug 2013Nice to know! :-) Maybe some app messed something up, sometimes after I use Opera Mobile (whic... more:))). Thanks for the advice:). Though i'm to lazy to do that, to:)), it is a good idea...
Rad-K, 24 Aug 2013oops, solved, just delete data access point and get configuration from operator again :) Nice to know! :-) Maybe some app messed something up, sometimes after I use Opera Mobile (which is, almost never) other apps can't access the internet until I reboot the phone.
@Carol, man, you should consider making a .txt compilation file with all your advice and when someone asks something that was already answered, just copy/paste instead of having to write it again. But, I don't mind when you do it, as I always learn something new. ;-)

i hope it helps.......
guys, i got a problem with my n8 default web browser, it doesn't open pages while on 2g/3g, it is ok on wifi, but on data connection it shows 'browser unable to connect to website', my data connection works fine with every other app, opera, uc, youtube, weather, skype, etc, except 'web', i tried all the possible setting changes, anyone got an idea?
Stupid me, 22 Aug 2013Is it true that if you put a big memory card into your phone it slows it down and may even cau... moreI already write the mem card issues, didn't you read? Wo, with the beginning. A 64 gb card will work properly only if you don't hit the 32 gb boundry (sometimes, even if you don't, your phone can crush and write errors on your card (ever occured: memory corrupted, format?). So, while others may think this comes cause the phone or the card are not good enough, and mark the 64 gb option as a working solution, i definetly NOT recommend it by any means (cause is a waist of money, and maybe even a waste of allot of data, if things get bad). 32 gb card is a go, and if you heave a very good brand (sandisk, PNY, Polaroid, LEXAR, maybe kingstone to). 16 gb i recommend just cause you will not be able to put extreme data on it, this avoiding the slowdowns when your phone will search for it( of course that if you have 6000 of photos, your gallery will slow down a bit until all will be scanned, so overall performance will be a bit slowed down, not by much though and in general this happens only with your whole memory being full or almost full. Also look for spead. Buy a micro sd with the best readig spead you can find, not to extreme cause our legend device is old and will not take advantages from them. If you have enough money and are willig to buy a premium one, you can try to find the sandisk mobile ultra class 10 16gb uhs1. If you want more memory try to find the SanDisk microSDHC Ultra 32GB, class 10, UHS-I. It can be quite expensive, though...
Stupid me, 23 Aug 2013Well, if 16GB is almost 4 DVD's, then the advice was good because no way I can find, lets say ... moreJust downloading some episodes of the science talk show I missed. 1 hour = 150-200 MB. So, basically you get 5-6 episodes in one gigabyte. And after I watch them I'll probably delete them. A full movie in 360p is around 300 MB. So, no idea how to fill all the space - yet. I tend to keep only important stuff, and things I can't easily replace. I have some music too but I usually listen to it on my PC or stereo anyway. And a few favorite videos and full concerts to have near me when I need something to cheer me up. SanDisk is a respected brand, but speed-wise you have to know what class it is, not what brand it is. ;-) It should be written on the package if not on the card.
Now that you remind me I do have a real tuner too, I wonder if there's any life in the battery left since I used it last time. Also I got the HDMI cable with the phone but it's buried somewhere in my room, haven't seen it in a while. Hmmm, Zedge has millions of users, of course you didn't see me when you didn't know what to look for. :-D
Argh, a plane was flying low today and I took a photo of it with my phone, but I was too slow so the composition wasn't much to speak of. But I can see the plane quite well.
Anonymous, 23 Aug 2013My phone lost and i want to formate specil and privet data on it ihave serial no can i do it... moreToo late. :-(
N8 has a 'remote lock' feature where you can lock it by sending a code via SMS, and there are some security apps, but if you don't have any of those there's not much to do. You can call your operator or the police and report it as stolen.
My phone lost and i want to formate specil and privet data on it ihave serial no can i do it through worled wide wirless?
MdN, 23 Aug 2013I only did a little research, apparently there are problems with some 32 or 64GB cards of some... moreWell, if 16GB is almost 4 DVD's, then the advice was good because no way I can find, lets say 7 DVD's worth of stuff to put in the phone. OMG! I'll forget what I have for sure. I can be more lavish now and download like crazy :-). I never thought I would go into a store and the clerk would discourage me from buying! The whole incident was amusing :-). Where do you think SanDisk fits? Slow or middle? That's all I've seen around here and "no name" which I refuse to buy. Fast card and slow card??? Who woulda thought!
Shush! Thanks for your advice on downloading videos and suggesting what apps to use. I like YouTube Downloader Pro which records mp3's as well. Normally I just watch straight off the PC so I'll try this and keep a few videos on the phone for when I have to wait in boredom somewhere. Of course you will have realized I was just grand-charging about HDMI. I don't know a damn thing about it :-)))).
Like you, my newly recorded guitar tuner is mainly for emergency. I normally use my old Korg but the readings for the 2nd & 3rd strings are inaccurate so I always have to tweak those. So I can now use both together and get it right (I tried it). But the best part is I don't have to walk with the Korg at all what with it being almost as big as the phone. If it is a bit out of tune, nobody cares but me (it jars my ears)! The other people won't even notice. I did not see you on Zedge.
Stupid me, 22 Aug 2013Is it true that if you put a big memory card into your phone it slows it down and may even cau... moreI only did a little research, apparently there are problems with some 32 or 64GB cards of some brands but 16GB generally works, and since it's enough for me I went with that. Hey, I have as much memory as some "flagship" phones now, and I can always get another spare card. There are reasons causing phones to slow down, yes. Cards come in different "Classes" (read/write speed) so if it's low class (slower than the phone) it can cause stutter, but Class 10 is faster than this phone so there shouldn't be problems. N8 officially supports up to 32GB but I see people can use 64 too.
Also, phone/PC writes files in the first available space, so the files can get fragmented, one file with parts in many different places. This shouldn't cause lags but somehow it does. But they can be defragmented too. :-) My other phone would start reading photos from the gallery really slow, but when I defragmented the card it turned back to normal. Well, 16GB is almost 4 DVDs which is a lot, unless you record HD video.
The built-in Voice Recorder is quite great. I tried recording some rain and thunder sounds from my window and it was okay, very little noise (if any) and good bass and treble... And someone speaking in the other room ruining my recording! >:-/
I tried some other sound recorders but they are mostly call recorders "without the beep sound" (who cares) and bad interface, the only one I kept is Audio Recorder Pro which can even record in CD quality. There's a mono/stereo option too but I couldn't get it to record stereo. By the way, N8 has some sort of electronic microphones capable of recording up to 115 decibels with no distortion. Not as good as 140 on the 808 but still very decent and very loud. :-)
I normally use freeware called Guitools on my PC for guitar tuning. The ones on my phone are just for emergency or "just because". :-) Well, since I play black metal I don't need to be 100% in tune, haha. I'm just so glad it's working, my other phone had some noise reduction where silent sounds would just be cut off, it drove me mad as I couldn't find an app for it.
Downloading videos? Easy! :-) YouTube Downloader is free at Nokia Store, there's also a free version of FastTube - you can use both to browse, watch or download videos. There's also YouTube Downloader Pro which can, in addition, download just mp3 from a YouTube video. Then there's YouTube downloader for PC, a "1-click YouTube Video Downloader" for Firefox and... Blah, blah... :-) So, just find the video you want, choose 360p (if you'll only watch it on your phone), hit "download" and wait a while.
