My E65 only has a 1,3mpix camera and crap optics etc, but after 2+ years, it still takes just as good pictures as it used to and there are no scratches on the lens and it's even more vulnerable than the lesne of N8.

My 3yr old n95 8gb's camera is not at all scratched. For God's sake it is recessed into the frame how could you possibly get it scratched?
The n8 as it is, is about 14mm thick around the camera. Would you rather it had a cover and be atleast 16mm thick?
Lets leave size apart, i still would pick a phone without a lens cover than one with a manual one. Lots and lots of apps nowadays make use of the phone camera. I personally don't enjoy the routine of opening the app, opening the cover, closing the camera application and then going back to the app.

The screen itself is Gorilla glass, and I'd believe so is the lens in that thing, cos at least both as referred to as "highly scratch-resistant".
Search youtube for "gorilla glass" to find out it's awesomeness.

I think u are blind.My previous post went wrong, but why need a cover it will make the phone ugly and this cover is good enough.
And its highly scratch resistant.

It will be better if it has:
-super AMOLED screen
-800 x 480 resolution
-stereo speakers
-video recording 30fps at least
However, it is a wonderful phone

Ken, 26 Aug 2010as u say "highly resistant" not anti-scratches, in the end it will.... Watch video of N8 on youtube,the man use the metal coin to scratch on the N8 but nthng hpnd as it is highly scratch resistant ! :)

[deleted post]I wont even think about iphn4 ! Itz a waste of money! It doesnt worth buying! N8 is full of features and the price is half the iphn & itz the fact :)

With the Nokia N8, we need to balance the capability of the entire product, not just the camera but also the size and design. Adding a lens cover, whether it be manual or automatic would have increased the size of the raised area around the camera, especially with regard to thickness) There would also have been an impact to the foot print of that area as there are other components in that area. Such as, flash capacitor, loudspeaker and one of the stereo digital microphones. The cover glass itself is multi-coated and is heavily scratch resistance. It passes Nokia's tumble test and other associated durability tests which you and your readers may have seen in the past.
