I actually end up paying Orange £540 for 18 month contract in UK. I bought my phone from Carphone warehouse with the Deal the Nokia 5800 phone was free. Nokia 5800 was worth £299 at the time I got it on contract.
So orange were earning £249 for the 600mins, Unlimited txts. That's not including the plus £4.60 for Mobile 500mins Internet bundle over that 18mnths. They really do charge you the earth! Whereas some phones are way too expensive costing more to buy if you can't get them on pay & go.
So sometimes with highe spartphones it pays to do the calculations & work out which tariff you need or they'll sting you up, down, right left & centre. Sometimes the pay off is contract is cheaper unless you wait for phone to come down in price, get 2nd hand. But I don't want 2nd hand, brand new.
I have noticed that some new high end smartphones for 2010 require a £35 contract but across a 24month contract, or £40 across 18 month contract. That is getting too rediculous. I want to upgrade phone before 12 months or 18 months really. Orange would still make their money with the tariff & pay the phone up. They are just too greedy.
I guesse as the price goes up on mobiles cost for unlocked sim free no network. The operators will find a way to make you pay less over a longer period & more over a shorter period of time. I am unhappy & have to stick with a Mobile for 18 months. But at the cost of me paying more than £30 a month to get a 12month contract so I can upgrade my phone quicker!
There's alway a catch for everyone no matter which way they do it. Unless you live in a heavily public free Wifi access point areas, use skype to make calls, then your only really going to defeat the carrier someway with a cheaper unlock device, but then 2nd hand a great choice for those that don't mind a 2nd hand device, but I do.

I understand the con of the subsidized phone. It's one of the biggest cons in U.S Consumerdom.
I also understand that it is here to stay in the U.S and nothing is going to change it anytime soon. Americans do not buy unlocked phones and that is an undisputed fact. So there is no question that it's a marketing mistake for them in the U.S Market. I never claimed otherwise. But for better or worse, thats how Nokia Plays the game with the U.S Carriers and God Bless Em for doing so.
It’s not just the cost of a plan. It’s the mandatory plan add-ons you have to have when you buy a subsidized phone. It's the dictation of the carriers what you will pay for all because they sold you a cheap phone. It’s the lack of freedom to change plans or carriers whenever you want without getting bent over by the carrier.
If I buy an unlocked phone with WiFi then I have the choice and power NOT to have the data plan shoved down my throat just cause I bought the phone from the carrier. It's about who has the power to dictate how I will use my phone.
The carriers make their $$$$ off the plans, not the phones. They all but give away the phones because they have to make people think it’s a better deal then buying unlocked.
They tap into the typical American’s unquenchable lust for instant gratification. Walk out with a nifty new phone for nothing....worry about paying the bill later.
As far as my point about being usable by both AT&T and T-mobile. My point is that if you do not enter into a contract with either, then you choice to use the features of this phone with who ever you choose and whenever you want.
Ultimately, it's about me being in control and not the carrier. And I'm one American who will gladly take the hole over the leak in this instance in order to hold on to my choices and power as a consumer.

As a consumer, I am either using AT&T, or Tmobile (that is, only 1 of them). Now what matters to me is that the phone should support the service I am using and thats all. I dont care if it supports all the other providers or not. So yes, while it will matter because the consumers using either tomobile or AT&T can buy this. It is by no means a *feature* for an individual consumer if it supports a service they wont even use.
Secondly, you are right. The price may not be that high. But are you saying it wouldn't have mattered if nokia had launched this subsidized in US ?
Buying subsidized phones is kind of a culture in US now. If you have ever been to US and have interacted with the people, or you have any relatives/friends there, then you'd know. Everyone is happy to shell out &99,&199,&299 in one go and be tied to a 2 year contract. But they wont spend friggin 500+USD on a phone in one go.
Even if the former turns out to be way more expensive eventually, it is affordable because it is like a leakage in your pocket that leaks slowly enough for it to retain something for other things, instead of cutting a big hole in your pocket.
So yes, it would be a marketing mistake.
Anonymous, 21 Aug 2010Just wanna say that despite I am a Nokia fan and SO want this N8, it appears that this is now ... moreI feel your frustration, but my take is a little different. I've had my eye on this phone for quite awhile and even though its taken longer than it should to get this phone to market, I'll sit it out a bit more till this phone is released in the next month or two. I want to be able to read User/Real Time Reviews (NOT WEBSITE REVIEWERS)and I want to compare this phone with others that are in my sights.
The last thing I want to do is jump the gun and miss something potentially great due to my impatientce!
Just wanna say that despite I am a Nokia fan and SO want this N8, it appears that this is now delayed AGAIN! I'm getting really fed up waiting and NOT going to wait and am going for Iphone or something different! :O(
When you compare the $549.00 price (in the U.S anyway) and features of the unlocked N8 with others, it's EXTREMELY competitive if not a downright bargain. This phone is a pentaband people! It's capable of picking up BOTH AT&T AND T-Mobile 3g Signals. What high end Android Phone can do that for the same ballpark price? Or how about the iPhone? Omnia HD? The Galaxy Line?
That one feature along almost makes it worth the price. Then when you start adding up all the other features and it goes over the top.
Check out the websites. There are alot of devices who features don't even come close to what the N8 offers and yet they cost the same or more.
And for those who still think the price is high, just wait till the notorious Pre-Order portion is over and it actually hits the streets and starts showing up on sites like Amazon, Dell etc.....the price will start dropping.
