1337INT80H, 26 Jun 2011Maemo 5 is a modified version of the Debian Linux distribution, slimmed down for mobile device... moreHonestly when the Elop speech happened and just before that i gave up on QT because it seemed wastefull studying it with no future..Next its up and flowing again.I have seen so many people start learning away and then the platform is scrapped.
I am keeping my options open ATM with reguards to study i have no time to waste on useless study with no apparent future.
1337INT80H, 26 Jun 2011Maemo 5 is a modified version of the Debian Linux distribution, slimmed down for mobile device... moreYes its running Debian package insteard of RPM.
AnonD-252, 26 Jun 2011The user interface on S2 can easily be changed by the user, soon there probably will be a user... moreNo i don't agree with you. The user interface on this n9 harmattan phone is locked down. And it's not open. Meego os might be open source and all but nokia will not let anybody copying their swype based ui to anybody. Be it htc, samsung,lg,motorola or sony ericsson. And did you not seen it's multitasking screen which is awesome. Android developers cannot copy everything about this awesone harmattan ui......
Sails, 26 Jun 2011And for all their logos, I'm pretty sure NOKIA has far better global brand recognition. Th... moreLogo is not for recognizing only. It is a meaningful image that characterize a company or group. All registered & major companies in the world have logos. if you found the divx logo on your phone or media player meaning it can play divx files. you don't have to read the whole manual to prove that your player can play dvd or mp3 if you found the dvd or mp3 logos printed on it. the recycle logo reminds us to recycle things if it is printed in any products we bought. logos are important. why you are reacting like a kid.
1337INT80H, 26 Jun 2011Maemo 5 is a modified version of the Debian Linux distribution, slimmed down for mobile device... moresince meego is a combination of maemo and moblin, what is the big difference if someone calls it a meego device. you said it uses maemo 5 staff. no body called netbook meego as moblin, but people called it mmeego. why can't i call N9 has meego when harmattan is mix of maemo and meego uxs
Maemo 5 is a modified version of the Debian Linux distribution, slimmed down for mobile devices which uses an X Window System-based graphical user interface.
Using Xomap and the Matchbox window manager; the GUI uses the GTK+ toolkit and Hildon user interface widgets and API.
Maemo 6 Harmattan isn't using Hildon User Interface + the GTK+ toolkit, instead using full Qt toolkit & libraries.
So the Nokia N9 is only running essentially a newer version of Maemo called Maemo 6 codenamed Harmattan. It is only a transition towards MeeGo. The N9 is not running a full version of MeeGo.
Maemo 6 harmattan the newest & latest & last OS with Qt should pave the way to new OS's... according to some sources Nokia may be working on a New OS that may or may not be MeeGo. It will be Qt based.
That makes sense as Nokia's devices throughout the ecosystem are building with Qt development framework so all apps will seamlessly run across multiple platforms.
Don't forget it is not Pure MeeGo. Harmattan has in it's genes more in common with Maemo.
The N9 is already dead before it even arrives.
Nokia should have prioritize MeeGo over WP7.
AnonD-7829, 26 Jun 2011I'm not sure what are people saying with "It's not Meego, it's Harmattan". It's Meeg... moreHarmattan is/was developed solely by nokia based on maemo 6. Its not meego but they use simillar api's so apps should run across both.
I'm not saying nokia intends to rename the platform, i'm saying they're starting with something else from scratch.
“... It has many UX, design and material innovations that we are going to
use and expand upon in forthcoming devices. I cannot tell you about them
more clearly yet, but you’ll see soon (what I mean).”
There is alot of information in that Elop quote. Especially when we run it parrallel with what we already know to be facts.
He is clearly stating that nokia intend to continue with the UI introduced in the n9 but on a different platform of which he can't speak about. What platform is that?
Mark, 26 Jun 2011You are mad. The SG2 interface looks like a big pile of steaming dung compared to the N9. Plea... moreThe user interface on S2 can easily be changed by the user, soon there probably will be a user interface on the Android Market that looks and feels just like the one on N9. Swyping to move to the homescreen in any game/app will be a problem because a swype withing a game/app can move the user to the homescreen without he/she wanting to. It is better to have a hardware button/key to press to move to the homescreen from within any app/game, and it is better to unlock the screen with a hardware key because if it is activated using gestures then it need to be constantly "on", draining battery, and if you have it in your pants pocket it will activate waiting for that second tap because even capacitive screens activate through thin pants, just place your finger behind your t-shirt and then touch the screen on your N8...
N9 will not have Android Market so you will not be able to easily use Android apps on N9.
just been thru gsm first preview, wha a sleek beast.
AnonD-7829, 26 Jun 2011I'm not sure what are people saying with "It's not Meego, it's Harmattan". It's Meeg... moreit is over all meego. it supports meegp apps. so? meego is a combination of maemo 5 and moblin.
AnonD-1124, 26 Jun 2011the n9 doesn't run meego. It runs harmmattan which is nokia own
project. The ui on this devic... moreI'm not sure what are people saying with "It's not Meego, it's Harmattan". It's Meego 1.2, codename Harmattan, much like newest Android is Gingerbread or something.
It's a Meego, either way.
EDIT: Ok, well I did some googling. Seems that Harmattan is somehow at the same time Maemo 6, MeeGo, but then it's still neither and is not MeeGo but still somehow is Meego. Confusing.
Either way, I'm pretty sure when Nokia says that this will be the last Meego device (notice how they say last Meego, means this is Meego :D), I doubt it means that "we just call it Harmattan from now on" :D
Cos if that would be the case, I'm pretty sure they would say it, cos obviously a crapton of people are thrilled about the OS.
Looks pretty good from the demos we've seen so far. Don't know if I would get one though. I really need a hardware qwerty keyboard, and the fact that Nokia's dedication to developing Meego is a bit disheartening. But that UI looks really, really good, and the swipe gestures seem to work amazingly. But it's nice to see that Nokia definitely do still have the ability to produce innovative products...
Toss, 26 Jun 2011After reading most of d comments wat i've observed is all nokia fans who wants 2 buy dis phone... moreYou are mad. The SG2 interface looks like a big pile of steaming dung compared to the N9. Please everyone, just test the device yourself and you will see.
Sails, 26 Jun 2011Actually there are quite a few Samsung fans that all day long vote other phones down and give ... moreYou are so right. This site is plagued by Samsung boys that are paid to upvote and downvote. Daily interest tells the real story!
the n9 doesn't run meego. It runs harmmattan which is nokia own
project. The ui on this device is nokias proprietory software and not
meego.
The reasons for the positive response the n9 got were
-the ui
-Qt support
Like i said earlier, regarding the ui, its not meego.
“It has many UX, design and material innovations that we are going to
use and expand upon in forthcoming devices. I cannot tell you about them
more clearly yet, but you’ll see soon (what I mean).” -Elop
That
is elop telling you in plain english that nokia would continue/improve
this ui in forthcoming devices. Heck they made a video to show of the ui
plus a manual on how to go around it. Do you think they did that just
for the n9?
Here are the facts.
1 Nokia intends to continue with the ui on future devices.
2 Nokia intends to continue with Qt.
3 WP does not, can not and will never support Qt
4 Nokia is discontinuing meego.
Do the math. Nokia is developing a new os with Qt at heart and a similar ui to that shown on the n9.
