unSungLoser, 18 Nov 2009according to the servey Nokia did, 90% people use qwerty phones in landscape more then portrai... moreHa, ha, ha. I wonder who Nokia surveyed.
Everyone I know with a phone with a slide out landscape qwerty keyboard uses the phone in portrait mode most of the time and only switches to landscape mode for certain tasks. Couple that with a usable portrait mode virtual keyboard and the use of landscape mode reduces even more.
Everything I've seen in the way of user feedback also confirms this. In fact when Nokia asked potential N900 users on their site which features they most wanted, portrait mode was number one so I guess that their survey was worthless.
Having used a phone with the same form factor as the N900 for the last two years, I can tell you that in my case, no portrait mode = no purchase.
I use the phone one handed a great deal and in fact I’m interested in anything that lets me do this more effectively… like a better virtual keyboard for quickly replying to an SMS or typing two or three characters to filter my contact list from almost 1,000 to 8 or typing a three character nickname in my RSS reader so that I can quickly forward a story to a friend or typing five characters in my email app so that I can search through thousands of emails for just a few from a particular person, or writing brief notes when someone is talking to me face to face, or looking through a list of items while shopping, etc, etc.
Now some people might feel differently but my personal experience has shaped my requirements. I think that a number of people will get this phone thinking that they can get on with it being pretty much landscape only but will later find that being forced to use the device two handed and in landscape mode for even the simplest of tasks annoys them no end.
Personally I think that this decision was more of an ideology/marketing thing – “Hey it’s just like a PC guys.”
Attn all potential UK buyers.
Amazon USA are selling this phone unlocked and sim free for just over £300 ($510).
Thats £200 less than any UK retailer!
If only n900 can be used in portrait it's the best mobile phone, It's very hard to use it with one hand you need two hands to do every thing and that is not good for me, we sometimes need to use a mobile phone in portrait whith one hand, how nokia forget that??????????????
Deep space bar, 18 Nov 2009Pre ordering in a few days hope by friday :3Hey Deep space bar,
Do you know if the spec of the N900 you're going to order is the same as is available in the UK?
Anonymous, 18 Nov 2009If that is correct and there is no fix in the near future then this phone is dead to me :(according to the servey Nokia did, 90% people use qwerty phones in landscape more then portrait. and thats what nokia did.
the reason why the phone is very expensive is that the cost of doing business in the uk is very high and the taxes they pay to the government too.the vat is pass to we the customer by 15% of the cost. shipment cost, wages cost and all other cost are pass to us.
From what I can see from the folks on this site the N900 is available in the US for about $550 but in the UK for £499.
At todays exchange rate of 1.68 that means in the UK we are paying $838 for the same phone.
Typical UK retail rip off !!
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to order one from the US? but with UK specs?
Nokia is always great, and has demonstrated its greatness again in n900. I love it. My only concern is the price. Can it ever come down?
