I didn't know that there was a version that would work with AT&T's 3G network.
Do you have information on such a device or are you planning on using it only on EDGE?

Wow! This is a great phone! Hope I can afford it.. LOL.. Really great, but expensive.. LOL.. Hope that Nokia will make phones likes this with a lower price :D
vinny, 15 Nov 2009mmmm... it's surprising as it supports .wav, .mp3, .AAC, .eAAC, .wma for ringtones.
Where did... moreHere is the source (remove spaces):

I hope you're right. I really wanted the N900, and custom ring tones is not that much to ask, is it?
What I do now: some callers I want to ignore, I set the ring tone to two small, very distinct beeps. So I know I should just ignore and the small two beeps do not disturb me too much. Simple and works. ;)

So... yes, no matter if you use it or not, it's important. Depending on who is calling, I may or may not hurry to answer. And the point is it's not hard to implement... it's a basic feature for all phones today. Even the most cheap, S40 monochrome phones.
MMS (yes, sorry about "SMS", lazy me)... I never sent one. And with data plans, it seems less and less important. But it's the small things that count together.
And as I said, many people is going to buy without knowing what they're getting. They see the spec sheet and they see "phone" but they don't expect many missing things that are taken for granted on a "phone"... Nokia may suffer.
Still, I hope I'm wrong... My second option would be the HTC Hero, but looks like it does not support FM which is mandatory for me. Oh well... choices.... :)
I am confused about one thing.
this phone as handwriting regoniztion correct?
there for i can write on it?
therefore there should be a program that can support it
but which program?
Office 07?
this phone seem prefect but need to know for sure if it carried Office 07, or can hold it.
just wanna know if it can recognize handwiritng and document viewing and editing.

been waiting for ages
Anonymous, 01 Jan 1970I think they are waiting to get their hands on the final unit.
there would be no point on publishing a review of the pre-release now since the N900 already started to ship.

but I can understand it can be a huge turn down for some people.
Plus, people gave so much sh*t to apple (myself included) for not including MMS to the iPhone for more than 2 years.
So it's surprising from nokia.
But again, I'm sure they will get MMS with the next update (or hopefully, it will be already included with the final unit).
Anyway, I'm really impatient for this week to start as people should start getting their hands on the final product.
So we can get feedback from real users!

u cant say that iphone is the s... moreit does supports customized ringtones, julius is complaining about the fact that apparently you can't get a personalized ringtone to EACH of your contact.
Which I understand why he would get upset (he's right about the fact that it's kind of the feature you expect on a $550 phone. me I don't really care as I don't use that feature. but a lot of people do).

Where did you get that information?
Plus it wasn't may be available for the pre-release (which would be surprising, i agree with you) but will probably be for the final unit.
we'll have to wait from users feedback.
as far as SMS, it does support it.
So I guess you meant MMS.
For some people it's not a big deal (I didn't send a single MMS for the past year and a half, I rather share via facebook or flickR. But I understand it can be a big turn down for some people. But like the iPhone did few months ago, i'm sure nokia will update that quickly, if not already available with the final unit.)
;)

Does someone know, if they kept the debian package manager (apt) on the phone? Coz debian has the full arm features, better then gentoo. Is there a gcc available on the device (and perhaps terminal, and changeable root password?) Are the drivers open source for the phone? (On Android HTCs, not) Can I boot from memory card, if I want to install another arm-based OS? And have someone tried kde programs on it? (amarok1, amarok2, konqueror, kaffeine, etc.)
can this play .gif files?
WTF! I was talking here, praising the N900.
I was about to buy when I saw it doesn't support __custom ringtones__ (each contact). Can you believe? Many people will be buying it without knowing! After all, you take that for granted on any phone... my ancient 1108 that I still have has that. And it's a __monochrome__ (not grayscale) phone from 2005.
No seriously, now I know why the iPhone has the credit it has. Very limited, but at least it is only launched when it's finished, polished and now it's well supported.
So.... it has über L33T root terminal and more, but no portrait, accelerometer based mode. No SMS and no custom ringtones. What else this $550 phone (shouldn't it be MID?) does not have? What about phone book, LOL!! That would make Graham Bell obsolete, you know?
