OK, deep breath. Where do I start!? You see the red, blue and green bars at the bottom of this gsmarena page, indicating design, features and performance? Well with this damn phone we need a new category: RELIABILITY!
I am an I.T. engineer and have been evaluating this phone for about three weeks or so. The list of problems is vast, so here goes what troubles I have personally had during my time with it (oh, and yes I did try updating the software/firmware and altered countless other settings in an attempt to fix them!!!).
Firstly, the build-quality was slightly questionable from the outset as the sliding mechanism was uneven. It slid up and down just fine, but the right side of it was loose and had significant movement, almost like clicking a mouse button. Next, I tried to use the wi-fi by accessing my wi-fi router, and with the original firmware, didn't even work! It would see the SSID and seemingly connect to it, but the browser wouldn't work. It would just hang and the phone would have to be re-booted. After the latest firmware update, it was slightly better, the browser would work for a while, say about 5 - 10 minutes, but would then just freeze again. This was all done through WPA security, and I never tried it with WEP, but maybe that would possibly help matters. I didn't have time to try it, but what with WEP being so very easily breachable these days, I really wouldn’t recommend this. Next, the actual navigation of just the menus was even slow. Either the main menu or the media menu in particular was painfully slow, however the latest firmware did resolve this issue. Next, there was a purple tinge when taking photos which was again resoved with the latest firmware. After this, the picture quality was absolutely superb. Texting was a bit of a pain. It was tricky to change between text modes, like between normal and T9 but also to select CAPS during these swaps. Unless you are familiar with Nokia software, it will take you some time to master this. I was coming from a Samsung, so it was obviously quite different. So really, this isn't a fault as such, but was still way harder to master than my old Samsung was from first-use. Another issue I had was trying to play games. I challenge anyone to play the ‘Snakes’ game without accidentally hitting the main menu or media menu keys at least once during gameplay. This is due to an unfriendly design of the main 4-way cursor control key(s) which are just too small, and too close to other keys. The one saving grace is that you can go back to where you last were during the game at least, since the game will still be running, but it will bother many people. Next, during phone calls, the phone froze at least twice a week, requiring a re-boot. This was only slightly improved with the latest software, but it still froze at least once after the update, again losing the caller and requiring a re-boot. Another issue, again during calls, was the fact that you could hear a very high-pitched whistle, not too dissimilar to that of a line-output transformer (the component inside a regular TV that you can often hear make an annoying high-pitched whistle) which drove me utterly crazy. Upon further investigation, it seems that this sound is actually caused by the screen, and NO, the software update did NOT resolve this issue. I strongly suspect this is a hardware issue, but only time will tell if a future update will ever resolve this, but if it is the screen, I can’t see how. The battery life wasn’t particularly good. Using the various features exhausted the battery pretty damn quick, although its life did start to improve, so it could have just been that it was new and needed some conditioning (i.e. to be fully discharged and then fully charged whilst being switched off). The GPS just didn’t function as it should – no signal etc. (although I didn’t try it after the firmware update). There are many, many other features on the phone that I didn’t have time to evaluate, but who the hell cares?! If the most basic features (i.e. MAKING CALLS!) don’t even work properly, then just what is the point of having the phone at all? After fixing PC’s all day, do you honestly think I want to come home and start pratting around for hours on end trying to get the damn wi-fi working on my own phone? Not on your life!
I couldn’t possibly recommend this phone to anyone, other than an amateur photographer who needs a good camera with the added bonus of having a ‘telephone feature’ on it.
In short, NOT RECOMMENDED.
best phone in my collection. symbian os outsmarts the wm5 I think. quality looks cheap but weights lighter is the buy. I am satisfied with the psiloc font size application too.
had it nrly a month now and ive had no issues and i use most features (bar the sat nav) every day. really impressed
Wow! 5 megapixels! Oh boy! Great job Nokia. I hope se will have smart-cameraphone atleast 5meg too. Hail to n95!

why are people so quick to write something negative about something the dont even own. half of the posts are people whos friends have it. why would you expect a phone that has that many features to have a long battery life? everything about this phone is amazing. you cant expect this phone to save your life, after all, its still a phone
I'm dying to add a comment here! I gotta admit when I first got this phone for upgrade at end of April, I told everyone its probably the best phone you'll ever use in your life (and I still think so to this day, u gotta admit it is) and I wouldn't let anyone say a bad word against it. the second day after i got it, the gps was taking ages to connect so i took it to the shop where the store manager said give it 24hrs after you pay the £40 charge to nokia then it'll work fine as "he had the same problems" i thought fine. and then it worked.
ok, now ive had it about a month n a half, n i see why so many ppl complain about it. i dont even bother use the gps now its just hopeless, and when it does connect, it gives wrong directions as it so slow, especially if you're driving over 50mph on the A12! The slide is too loose, the battery is TERRIBLE, oh my god, and that bloody symbian operating system that the N series swears by needs a makeover, its such a slow operating system.
All in all, fantastic phone, if you want a superb camera, video recording, excellent music quality, wi-fi and a host of other small features, also most downloadable due to the symbian-ness and working for Carphone Warehouse i would still recommend it, but if you're buying it mainly for the fact the it has all those features AND with the benefit of built-in GPS, then your best option (and cheapest) would be maybe a 3.2mp camera phone like the Sony Ericsson K800i/K810i Samsung U600 etc BUT buy a stand alone satnav unit... which if you go to carphone warehouse our cheapest one is on sale now for only £99.99 (a lot less than the £40-£50mth line rental per month for 18mths required for purchase of the N95!!)
hey guys, any solution for the very weak battery of this mobile?? i heard that the battery of E90 is compatible with N95 and it has 1500mAh so.. is this true??
n95 is top phone, but there are some n95 from dubai and china who are not good and thats why the price from 800euros came to 650 euros,be carfeul when you by one.
"Do not fix the slider yourself as you will invalidate any warranty you have on the handset. TAke it to a repair centre who will fix it for you."
Why should i have to send a brand new $1000 Nokia N95 in for repairs? I shouldn't have a loose slider in the first place. I want a COMPLETELY NEW ONE IN THE BOX.
yo kool fone but ugly as hell , get 8800 looks good and that really all u need i been usin these n95 and k800 fones and stuff but not worth it u need to llook good too
I have been on the waiting list for 2 months now, after all this I have still not received it and the service provider is telling me that 50% of the phones he has supplied have already been returned???? I now have a simpler Sony Erricson, pity I really fanced the N95!!!!!

I tried connecting to the internet using the wi-fi but couldn't connect. Does the other wi-fi barrier have to accept or anything? Can someone help plezzz!

my n 95 arrives on wed. i will post an honest opinion within 2-3 days . my phone has been bought via t mobile direct. some of your problems could be a result of dubious origins. watch this space.
Everyone's complaining about bad battery life.. yeah true it does have a bad battery life.... Alloooo??? due to it's sophisticated functions and gadgets found inside? nothing would last long with these specs...
everyone complaining is a heavy user of mobile phones... meaning they use to talk, take pictures, msging, wat else. of course the bat won't last.. and while saying other brands are best at battery life.. please dun compare until other brands have actually built in so many things which this N95 have in their phones.. i'm sure their batt won't last much either..
