I have used Nokia products for about 10+ years or so. The main reason I have stuck with them is the fact that they make one of the best, easy to use and extremely versatille mobile phones on the market. Another words their products will suite most users needs and beyond. After getting hands-on with the iphone (i stands for idiot) it is an overall basic device with a fancy screen and the user is at the mercy of the carrier or apple for what they wish to load or how they wish to use their phone. I recently helped a friend unlock one of these iphones 3G model and it is no piece of cake. Over 1.5 hours to unlock and still a piece of crapp. It is unbelievable how the advertisers in USA has sold this ovber priced phone to its people and labeled it "Multi-tasking". It appears that people in USA are less experienced with the word and believe anything the advertisers tell them. Comparing t with many other phones, iphone is definitely not multi-tasking device and for those who think of getting one, all I have to say is, use an iphone for 30 minutes and then you'll be either bored or thinking what is the big deal with this piece of crapp?
Gettging back to subject here, as mentioned I 've owned many Nokia high end phones from their 6230 to 6230i to N80, N70, N73, N93, N95, N95 8gig and now the N97.
The first N97 unit I purchased was having problem immediately so the good folks at Amazon were extremely nice and replaced it with a new unit. The replacement N97 worked somewhat OK for about 45 days. It takes most people some time to get used to their new device and find all the pros and cons and by then which is when I realized that my $600 N97 should not be freezing, rebooting, shutting down by itself or having GPS and web browser problem, it was too late to get a new replacement and now I had to deal with Nokia (Lack of) Customer care in USA. When my previous Nokia the N95 failed under warranty some year or so back, I had to deal with these people and lets just say that at the end after they replaced the unit and took care of its problems, it only took them 4 month, cost me $120 shipping fee to send it in, and over 15 hours on the phone and 7 letters to Nokia (lack of) customer care. It was not until I filed a complaint with NY atty general's office that Nokia took the matter seriousely and replaced my phone with a working unit.
Now it is round 2 with my new device the N97. I have already send it in to them and it was returned to me in the same malfunctioning condition. Nokia USA uses an outfit called PALCO to repair their devices. After dealing with Palco for sometimes, it is obvious that they are just not imcompetant, but rather illeterate people. The only thing they ever do when you send your device for repair is to reflash the unit and send it back. YOu could state any problems and even include a letter stating these problems but the remedy is alwasy the same. They never ever check the unit for probloems as stated, after reflashing the phone they also never check to see if the phone works properly. My N97 was returned to me with 12.0 software and upon turning it on it says the my device software needs to be updated. I used to live in Germany, if my Nokia phone ever had any problems, I would just take it to the Nokia store, and 3 or so days later, I would return and pick up my phone repaired and in excleenet working condition. I have to hand it to these people here in USA, Nokia's customer care is way below poor service and should be called "Nokia Aggrevating (lack of) customer Care."
I wonder sometimes to why would someone want to put themselves through such an ordeal and be played by people like Nokia? If Nokia did not make a good device, I personally would never buy them. Unfortunately it is their lack of understanding of their customer's needs and big mistake of using a place such as PALCO that will always keep them from succeeding in the US market.
Here are some prosd and cons of the N97. I am comparing the N97 with other Nokia N-series such as N95 which I still own.
Pros: There are not much pros or features that were not previousely included in older Nokia N series other touch screen with multiple widgets on home screen and Large memory 32GB.
Cons: Extremely slow operating system, constant lagging, Camera extended zoom missing, Built-in speakers performing horribly when using the music player, useless slide button to unlock the home screen works half the time and have to slide it several times and may be it works.
Overall, extremely dissappointed with the N97. Due to varying 3G operating frequencies, I had to switched from T Mobile to AT&T and that is another headache by itself that I will not go into. I will be replacing the N97 with N900 so that I can switch back to T mobile. Hopefully it will not have the bugs and flaws that the N97 has.

My experience has been overall positive, yes i've had some lags but nothing major. Even when i was on the older firmware v12, i could chat on fring, browse the net and have music playing in the background. The phone didn't lag while doing this. Just my experience.

I was finally able to update to the new firmware, and it gives the phone a whole new feel. I had some problems with the phone - mainly due to lagging and the phone not switching on (which forced me to hard reset twice), but I've had the new firmware for almost a week now and it hasn't hung once. Yay! Kinetic scrolling is great, but honestly I'm just happy that it seems to be faster and more stable. Also, finally long press on the keyboard - why they didn't include this initially boggles my mind.
My Personal opinions
n97 and n97 mini are the best phone for mass market at the moment! N900 is for geeks
why do we want Big iPhone size phone? Really hard to choose from both n97 variants, has been waiting for n97 mini review!
N97 has everything I want to have in phone! Despiting some issues with gps and Len cover and little c: memory on classic one!
Today I discover that I can watch tvb tv drama series through YouTube, this way I don't need coreplayer or decent real player! Vlc and mplayer for downloaded rmvb
qwerty is nice when chatting on skype msn yahoo, hate the on screen keyboard covering 2/3 of the precious screen real estate!
N97 is good If you take good care of it, know some basic phone maintenance skill! And how to operate it from getting hang, avoid installing as many apps as possible , avoid battery drainer software, learn the tips on saving space on c drive!
Sajith, 08 Nov 2009Thanx dude, I'll go with N97, Can u advise me about the firmware update???Glad to hear that you made up your mind to buy this amazing device mate. You should at least get a handset with the v12 firmware. I happen to know a couple of people personally who're using v10 and v11 and they aren't happy at all as a matter of fact they changed their product codes and upgraded to v20.
I on the other hand is using v12 at the moment and thankfully there aren't any problems at all. The v20 update isn't available for my handset as yet because my handset is career locked. Since I don't have any problems I think I'll wait for a while for them to release the update for mine and then update my device rather than changing the product code and getting the update.
So I suggest you go for v12 or higher. Good luck!
I took my N97 to a Nokia Service Centre so they can replace the Camera lens cover which caused scratches on the camera lens as well as the GPS signal problem. Insteadthos of fixing those 2 problems, Nokia decided to give me a new Nokia N97 with only the GPS problem fixed, the camera lens still scratches the lens slightly! What's even worse is that the phone has been pre-installed with firmware v10 and this time it is really bad. The phone hangs a lot when typing (almost every 10-15 seconds), after finishing a phone call the screen takes its time to switch back on as if the proximity sensor is faulty and it is terrible slow. One thing that bugs me is that the phone memory keeps declining even though I haven't installed anything on it. The phone memory was originally at 40.5MB but now its down to 36.2MB, what is it that I'm doing wrong? I'm gonna have to send it back and if they do not sort out the camera lens issue then I'm sorry but I'll just have to sell it. I'm starting to be really disappointed with the N97 as it's certainly not the best phone out there (except for the looks maybe).
I updated to firmware v20 a week ago and everything's been going fine for the most part. The phone's faster and more stable. Just one problem i'm encountering though - in music player when i try to edit 'song details' there seems to be a bug and the phone locks up. I have to restart the phone. Everything else with music player works fine, just editing the files. Anyone else get this problem?

But just a question: It's normal this phone get stuc... moreThis problem arises because the c drive of the phone is only 80mb, but only about 30-40mb is actually free because the rest is used up by the phone's essential software. Silly from nokia to put such low memory on the c drive, but there are ways to maximise this space, and there are many articles on the net explaining how. Currently i have 45mb free on my c drive and have never received a low memory error.
If you are thinking of buying this phone. My advice is please don't! There are better and cheaper phones out there.
I bought an N97 (white) in late June 2009. The phone was giving so much problems that I had to send it to the Nokia Care Centre for repair for more than 10 times within 6 weeks. Nokia tech support kept upgrading the os (everytime I bring my phone there) but the problems still not resolved. To make matter worse, after they 'fixed' something, they created another new problems. Example, my N97 (original nokia battery) could not stop charging for > 8 hours, and then suddenly went flat despite being fully charged despite that the phone was not used heavily (eg after 3 shots using the camera for 10 mins). Nokia insisted that there's nothing wrong with the battery and replaced the headphone jet (which I do not know why) and upgraded the software. The battery problem was not solved at all and now the video clips (nokia default clips) could not even run. Ridiculously, I was advised by Nokia not to restore my data. Not only hardware problem, Nokia PC suite also has a problem - it allows us to backup our data but we could not restore them back!
The white model has serious design problem - the white light from the backlight camouflages with the white fluorescent light, and thus the alphabets on the keypad are hardly visible at all (especially when I tried to type using the qwerty keyboard on the bus at night). Unless the room is real dark, the words will be clear. The black model does not have this issue.
Recently, when I turn OFF the alarm by simply pressing the stop button on the screen, the camera came on.
The phone will suddenly go to landscape mode, when I am holding the phone vertically. I had to shake HARD (I mean real hard) to flip it back to the vertical position.
There's double images at the Converter function. I travel extensively and thus stored a list of exchange rates on my phone. My newly added rate has double images, ie every alphabets or numbers has a "shadow" behind.
I was using an N70 and this super old model allows me to edit my phone contact labels. I am very disappointed that N97 does not. Thus, when I transferred my contacts to this phone, all my numbers went haywired.
The support from Nokia is beyond description or hope. They simply could not solve their own hardware problems and pushed the fault to their customers (eg accusing me of using third party Nokia battery). They conduct customer surveys but they never listen to their customers' feedback or comments. They simply ignored us, thinking that by ignoring the problem would disappear by itself. Certainly it would after the phone become obsolete, so will their customers!
There were many other problems (both design and hardware) with this phone but the above were the key ones.
In conclusion, I sold my N97 away last week, after 4 months of torture. No more Nokia for me!
Friends for me this phone is not upto the mark. For businessman this n97 is totally no no. since it don`t let you use quickoffice .so u cann`t even open word and excel files forget about editing them. u cann`t purchase quickoffice since its not available anywhere. Secondly, it get hang again & again even the latest version .Thirdly, it doesn`t connect on bsnl wi-fi. When i enquired on nokia toll free no. they surprised me by saying that n97 cann`t be connected through wi-fi.Even the service center people do not know anything. I feel betrayed.
