Oura Smart wearables Announcement

The Oura Ring 4 is now official and it brings a slew of improvements compared to the outgoing Gen3 version from three years ago.

Oura Ring 4 announced: sleeker design, updated sensors and redesigned app

Oura Ring 4 features a fully titanium exterior and interior ditching the epoxy interior of its predecessor. The new device is 2.88mm thick and weighs between 3.3 and 5.2 grams depending on the ring size. It is also water resistant up to 100m.

The sensors inside are a lot slimmer measuring just 0.3mm compared to 1.3mm on the Ring Gen 3 and they don’t stick out. And while the sensors have shrunk, Oura is promising improved accuracy.

Oura claims a 120% improvement in blood oxygen (SpO2) measurements with a 30% increase in accuracy during sleep compared to Ring Gen 3. The new Ring also gets a more accurate heart rate sensor with fewer gaps in daytime and nighttime heart rate measurements as well as a better breathing distribution index (BDI) via its higher signal fidelity.

Oura also tackled an underlying issue with smart rings by implementing an update algorithm that accesses more signal pathways from your finger at the optimal time.

Ring 4 brings an updated automatic activity detection with support for over 40 modes and heart rate monitoring with heart rate zone breakdown. You also get sleep and stress tracking as well as reproductive health trends. The automatic activity and stress tracking features are also coming to the older Ring Gen3.

The new Oura Ring still pairs via Bluetooth Low Energy to Android and iOS devices and it comes with the redesigned Oura App offering a simplified interface and dynamic cards. The refreshed app will also work with the Oura Ring Gen3.

Battery life on the Ring 4 is rated at up to 8 days on a single charge and it charges via a new charging dock.

Oura Ring 4 comes in Silver, Black, Brushed Silver, Stealth, Gold, and Rose Gold colors and in sizes 4-15. Pricing starts at $349/€399/£399 for the ring and you’ll also have to shell out an additional $/€/£ 5.99 per month ($/€/£ 69.99 per year) for the Oura Membership plan.

Pre-orders are already open while deliveries are scheduled to start on October 15.
