Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon Wear 3100 in September 2018, but the chipset for wearables had the same CPU as its predecessor Wear 2100 with the archaic Cortex-A7 cores.
Now, a new report has it that the San Diego-based manufacturer is working on a platform that is named WTP2700 and WTP429W (WTP stands for “wearable testing platform”) that appears to be based on the Snapdragon 429 chip for smartphones.
The Snapdragon 429 is built on the 12 nm FiNFET process and comes with four CPU Cortex-A53 units running at 2GHz. The chip has 64-bit support, meaning the new wearable will be able to offer better compatibility with modern software.
The Snapdragon Wear 429 (also could be named Wear 2700) should also have Bluetooth 5.0 and LTE modem. The platform supports EMMC 5.1, so faster storage should also be in the bag.
We are yet to see when the new chip goes official, but it was about time Qualcomm did something about its smartwatch offerings, which were using particularly old technology.
