Hey I read somewhere on the internet that the white SOE w850i has a golden walkman logo beneath the camera... I mean REAL gold! Is that true????

The model comes in two trims - Precious Black and Golden White. As you might have guessed our unit possesses the white one. But which one is more fetching – that was what rose heated debates among our staff. No doubt, the darker finishing scores an obvious victory on face-to-face comparison, but let me remind you how many sliders in black are on the market – at least a dozen, although they differ from the reviewed device design-wise, but look pretty much alike from a distance. Now what about white – as a matter of fact there aren’t so many of white-colored phones out there – maybe some models by Samsung, e.g. Samsung X810, or Siemens EL71 featuring silver color. Basically these are manufacturers themselves who made black color the dominating one. So this is the stage where consumers step into the limelight with their desire to be noted with a fresh-looking handset in their hands. By the way, Sony implements the same policy with its PSP console – while the black trim gets higher sale rates, the white finishing is far behind, but not because of being unpopular or unclaimed etc., but due to the European distributors preferring more spread colors. This has eventually led all customers, who would like to get their hands on a white PSP, to the shady market, where they are offered more expensive (by huge 10-15 percent as compared to the black ones) units.

This walkman phone comes in the slider form factor. It boasts a large display with QVGA resolution, full 3G capabilities with video calls, a 2 megapixel camera and the latest Walkman 2.0 music player. It’s an expensive mobile to start with but hopes are that it’s got more than needed to become the bestseller. You can download free games, themes, pics and ringtones off the Sony Ericsson website. I also downloaded the application-CONVERTER free. You just need to enter the WAPwebsite on your phone www.sonyericsson.com/fun
Hope this helps you and all the other folks wanting freebies for this amazing phone.

In my opinion, slider concepts' purpose is to reduce phone size. THis phone was not made for that purpose

This is my first Sony phone. In all, i love the phone however, there are 2 faults. 1st, no zoom on normal camera aspect and 2nd, closing the handset doesn't finish a call or complete the task you were doing. Apart from that, i like it.

"BTW why doesn't SE have integrated 3.5mm jacks? It can't be that hard.."

Well, I think you're glad to hear that the W850i comes with a 3,5mm adapter. The mic is located in the adapter, so you can use your one (probably superior) headphones without losing the headset-functionality. Quite awesome actually.

I'm getting mine next week and i'll definitely comment here again after I've used it for a few days. I'm a bit concerned about this navigation issue because I have big fingers. It can't be that bad. They said typing on the W550 was bad because of the small keys, but I got used to that very quickly and now have no problems at all. I hope I get used to the W850 just as quickly. True, the camera has no autofocus, but if photography is more important than music for you, then just get the K790 which is also cheaper than the W850.

There's no better phone than this in this fall/winter season. W810i is way too ugly. I don't really care about the functionaly. how worst can SE get with their software? but i do find some label bugs in my w850i. the white one looks sexy, the black one looks normal. So hard to find some nice phone than this one.

Well, the slider enables the phone to have a large screen and remain tiny (K750i/W800-like) at the same time. The screen's a big plus comparing to the W810i for me. I'm getting it next month.

Thanks for the excellent review gsmarena, been waiting for it for some time now!! I've had this W850i for a month now and it's my 1st Sony Ericsson. I must say, I've not been disappointed with it at all. The sound quality is second to none. An excellent mobile from SE. Well worth the wait.
