3G introduced a new more efficient codec that is marketed as "Voice HD". It's no wonder operators already started killing 2G, calls made from those legacy networks sound like utter junk but are more costly than if they were made from more efficient networks (4G/VoLTE would be ideal, but 3G is also more efficient).
It's only a matter of time until operators discontinue mass-market services in 2G, and turn the old infrastructure into a premium service for those (corporations) who really need 2G for some custom built thing.
They should have used the same old 3310 body but with better hardware/software
