after living with the note 8 since launch, i can say that accidental palm touches on the screen arent an occurrence that happens a few times a day, as you state in this article. i find if you use a case, especially a samsung clear view case or official case, you gain a slightly better grip on the device and your hand is orientated in a slightly different way versus no case. However, Im just providing my 2 cents and a follow up opinion, this website and your articles are invaluable, I work in a UK phone shop, and we use your website a lot for training and product knowledge, yours is by far the best website in the field.
Robbie, 26 Jun 2018Since when did an update change anything drastically on a phone? On every phone I've ever had... moreFrom your 1st sentence, you should know you will not be making a reasonable sense in relation to the topic and my comment.
great phone . love the design without notch. but sales are not so impresed. hope samsung will learn that they are not apple , they have to do something deferant each year to sell.
Shootergod, 26 Jun 2018I couldn't agreed with you more, Huawei is playing simple trick on battery life with FHD+ scre... moreActually some of us need the high ppi display for VR and it makes a difference...
Try VR with a low ppi display FHD+ and compare its with QHD....you'll notice the difference.
We need higher ppi for VR...S9 comes with 570ppi which is okay for VR...hopefully they'll bring 1200ppi in the next flagships to make VR content crystal clear but that will need a more powerful GPU to push a those pixels.
For now Mali G72 + 570ppi display will do...great for gaming
the title should have been called "3 months review" and not "long-term review"...long-term would have better been after 7-9 months....
Daany, 26 Jun 2018Absolutely no need to celebrate this review... The phone just got it's 1st update. So meh, it'... moreSince when did an update change anything drastically on a phone?
On every phone I've ever had I've never noticed anything other than minor tweaks even after a major software update.
I had a Sony Z2 a few years back, certainly didn't want another Sony after that thing.
Anonymous, 25 Jun 2018Right. What's the point of the long term review if everything is always perfect?! First I won't call this long term because its been only 3 months since the phone launch and no phone shows mahor problems within a year so long term reviews should wait a year or atleast 6 months
Second it has frustrations, niggles and annoyance but its hidden in those long section which you will have to read completely to find which I doubt a few people do. I and probably many other people usually skip to frustration section in long term (which is actually short term) which we can't do now and I thing that section is important
It is problematic phone really... basic feature calling not clear. Sometime people cannot hear what i say. Need to bring service ctr. At these price i advise buy other brand not s9+
Surprisingly the first Samsung without so much lags and stutters. Sound like a good device.
Daany, 26 Jun 2018Absolutely no need to celebrate this review... The phone just got it's 1st update. So meh, it'... moreI just hope the next update won't slow down the phone and introduce lags or stutters as well as more battery drain. Apple has been known to do it and likely other Android manufacturers too. Planned obsolescence tactics to make the user upgrade, just in time when a new model is released.
Absolutely no need to celebrate this review... The phone just got it's 1st update. So meh, it's been basically the same out of the box since lunch. From after next update(hope its not in another 3 months time), then this review could be waaaay different, if GSMA is sincere enough ofcourse.
Placed my order for the XZ2, don't really care about anything else. *Moving on*
Android - Prime, 26 Jun 2018I agree on everything written in this long term review except for one thing, screen resolution... moreI couldn't agreed with you more, Huawei is playing simple trick on battery life with FHD+ screen(for example on Huawei Mate 10 pro's display with 2160x1080pHD running on 4,000mAH) and it can juice out the best of battery life, because we can barely see a huge difference on pixel density of 6 inches and 6.3inches(1440x2960) display!
Sunny, 25 Jun 2018I have a request. When u post battery timings of Samsung flagships. Plz do it twice. 1 with de... moreIf you compare honesty, trust me, Samsung is more trust-worthy than most of its competitor nowadays. Hate as much as you want, bcos so far, they are the only one who listens to customers and stays away from what most of their consumer's hated stuffs plus they are the one and only company for now to admit their mistake publicly and correct it properly in the upcoming ones, also the one they have made(Note 7 FE)!
Apple keeps blaming their craps to users' fault, oneplus secretly collecting user's data for their own purpose etc
Andrei, 25 Jun 2018Well, give it a little more time. First 2 months it was ok. After 6 months with the s8, 2 upda... moreSo because of your one faulty S8, Samsung sucks now? lol... I too can create a nice story about Sony, it’s not hard.
Suggestion for Huawei: Learn from Samsung. Stop producing sealed battery flagships with huge 4000mAh batteries. That's the reason why my 2014 Huawei Mate 7 is still very reliable with 6 hrs average screen on time despite being almost 4 years old.
"The average screen on time was between 4 and 5 hours"
Gosh that's bad
My A5 2017 has like twice as much. And Ive paid 175 euros for it ..
Nice flagships, Samsung.
Suggestion for the Samsung S10: Add more cameras, more megapixels, more RAM, a newer processor, some new photo/camera slow-mo/portrait gimmick, etc. but please don't ever increase battery capacity. More cameras, more everything will justify your ever increasing flagship costs while still maintaining the phone's life within a 1-2 year average. After all, small sealed batteries mean deeper discharge levels, more charging cycles, and hence, shorter battery and phone life. Good way to hide your planned obsolescence without looking guilty.
4-5 hrs average on screen time as of June 2018. Released March 2018. That's barely 3 months. One to two years from now, it will be 1-2 hrs average on-screen time. Good job Samsung. Your planned obsolescence is working as scheduled. People will be buying your new model next year if they can't tolerate the drastically reduced battery life.
