Gsmarena, it would be interesting how the image quality is when you choose 23mm (not 27mm) in pixel binning mode. Does it use the ultra wide angle camera or the main camera in pixel binning mode at 23mm? For example the P30 Pro relied basically on its main camera at 125mm in the default mode (and fused some data from its periscope camera). It switches to the periscope camera at 135mm in the default mode.

All that is a great, but what should convince me buying this over OPPO Find X2!?
Huawei has bad reputation now, and it could catch some market share outside of China, only with lower prices.
I can see myself buying one in 6months for like a half of this price.

Why would anyone buy this? Overprocessed photos, high price for what it is and no Google Services....
Get a Samsung, an Apple, a Pixel for better images. Or get the cheaper Xiaomis. All with Google Services and without the shady pedigree.

The real night scenes are usually a lot harder to deal with than controlled studio light image comparison chart.

This kind of severe issue will be resolved before the product even gets released to the market so I don't have to beg for anything, but thanks for your concern lol. And you know they have a good track record when it comes to tuning cameras through software updates.

It's slightly sharper and less noisy in auto albeit worse dynamic range, both produce perfectly usable photos for small to medium image sizes.

S20 ultra gives a little bit noise (acceptable levels) but much better detail in low light while p40 pro is giving cleaner but softer images.

Detail levels are low (can't expect much from small sensor).
In short, they are usable only in night mode which takes 8 seconds (pretty impractical).
Keep begging Huawei for an update.
By that time S20 ultra will have even improved telephoto quality with gcam.
Plenty of phones with IMX 586 on the market, so a gcam port won't be much of a problem.

I've just watched a YT unboxing, Im excited to see the penta'camera in action, I love the design too! The design on the screen is beautiful and with a huge refresh rate the touch to action response is super quick, I mean theres quick and then theres Huawei Quick. Plus its the first handset in 2020 to offer an overflow display, Which says other manafacturers will clearly replicate, Tech Radar once said if you want to look at phones 2 years a head of the time look at last years Huawei handsets, Which says they're always ahead of the curve. Bravo Huawei Bravo

Screen resolution and framerates depends on CPU.
It is not clear if Kirin 990 can handle more than 90Hz.
It is not always matter of choice.
SD865 can handle QHD 144Hz and 4K 60Hz.
Does not mean other like Kirin, Mediatek and A can do too.

When you switch between 50MP and 12.5MP (default) mode, you can indeed notice that the high-res photos offer wider field-of-view, meaning some cropping is happening before we get those 12-megapixel photos."
Wow, that's extremely strange. Huawei already did the same thing with the P30 Pro periscope camera (it was cropped in order to get 27x5 = 135mm instead of 125mm).
The sensor is 75mm² large, but I have measured(!) the crop and it's approximately a 1.178x crop, which is consistent with 27/23 = 1.174. This means that the actual sensor area that is used in pixel binning mode is only 54mm² large and only has approximately 9.1 (!) megapixels! This also means that the main camera captures approximately 4% less(!) light per time than the P30 Pro.

This way is easier to use larger sensor, compare to 120, 150, 200, 250 etc ....
Also 20 Ultra does 12MP at 104mm.
At 125 or 250, resolution drops at lot.
The 64MP of S20( 28mm) will be 7MP quality at 80mm.

I think you're just confusing more noise with better details. The first low light sample, for example, shows that S20 Ultra indeed retains a lot of grain patterns on a wall - but then the same noise pattern continues towards the top of the building then bleeds into the sky, messing up the outline of the building in the process. P40 Pro does similar job without letting noise soften up edges of the subject. It's just better at balancing between textures and noise.

It's very important for me and many other readers.
But I suppose that with 495 nits of max brightness it isn't spectacular or class leading.

It's hard to judge which one is better in auto when P40 Pro messes up colours so hard. Admittedly S20 Ultra has a slight upper hand in night mode with better microcontrast, but here P40 Pro isn't a terrible performer like you expected either. It's a substantial upgrade over P30 Pro's telephoto lens and in fact produces a decent result, and it should more so in auto after the software update. In the end it didn't suck, and that's the point I've been making so far.

What difference does it make? Anyway, P40 Pro is doing poorly in low light with its heavy noise reduction. Samsung is known for their heavy noise reduction but the Ultra really retains details well in the low light shots.
