OLED screen have to be higher in resolution to look as sharp as LCD. It’s how the pixels are build with the OLED.

When iPhone XR came i compared it to My X and both looked very good, i really couldn’t see any noticable difference in sharpness. Maybe if i would really have tried to compare them together, but overall both had great looking screen.

To give this phone fair review from Android boy.

What's good:
. CPU
. Apple Support
. low entry to iOS $399 might be a steal for many.
. Metal frame.
. Even if it's bigger than it's predecessor and bigger than what many would like is still shorter than other phones of this year.

What's fair
. Display isn't bad. It's just inferior to what competition has to offer. I mean, you can get Full HD AMOLED for that price.
. Bezels aren't bad. but are bigger than necessary. And many of us want them completely gone.
. I It's fair to call compact. Since it is a whole centimetre shorter than today's flagships. S10e is little bigger, but can't be found in local stores right now (Non US reader here). XS, 11 pro are also little bigger but cost a lot more and everything else is really big for some people.
. 3GB RAM. Regardless OS, Apps will always benefit with more memory to allocate for themselves. But since we know how different strategies iOS and Android have towards memory, I would say 3GB might be on par of 6GB android. I personally wish companies were more generous with RAM, especially when they charge a lot for their products. Apple saved a lot of on this phone design, so more RAM wouldn't hurt their darn profits. But it's their customers, who have to demand that. None of my problems.

What turned me down.
. Glass sandwich. I litteraly hate that . For a record: I thought it had metal back and was gonna get solely for that reason. I understand that it would fuck up wireless charging. But, I do love that darn cold metal feel and for a person with caseless style of phone ownership, metal back is better; glass is fragile.
. Battery life. Even with that small capacity, I expected more than what we get. I mean, it scores lower than iPhone 8. Can GSMA redo battery test ? Might software update improve that? I don't know.

What shouldn't talked about at all.
. The absence of 3.5 jack. First, At this point of spacetime, effectively All major android OEM-s have removed that useful (at least to me) port.
And secondly, Apple removed that jack three and half years ago and knowing apple , they would rather go three and half hour long dance with explanation of why you should move towards wireless , than admit mistake and bring back feature a lot of their customers want. If you haven't made peace with that fact in three and half years, then look somewhere else.

Consider all this, I call this phone a fair offer. And as many apple products , it might eventually sell well. But is hardly a flagship killer. It will be only for people tied to specific OS, small hands or limited budget but still valuing getting proper support. Anybody else would add little extra, say $50 on top of $450 for 128GB model and for $500 and more , you definitely can get better deal.
Also prices in Countries different than US, are many times worse.

We'll see.

peter lac, 05 May 2020https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?nYearMin=2020&nDisplayDensityMax=300Which one is more expensive or even at equal price point with this phone?

>you have more expensive phones with such display resolution.
You clearly stated that.

Name One, which is more expensive. One. You can't . At most, as I checked few of them, they cost half the price. Some cost less than quarter than this phone.

I'm aware that phones with sub-FullHD (and many even less than HD720p) displays are still made.

I actually like this phone, but it has some setbacks for me. And I'm perfectly fine with my current phone and android. They aren't best but satisfy my needs.

Today you find some huge screen mid range Androids for the same price of the SE or cheaper but the truth is that none will be able to outperform and outlive the iPhone SE. For those who don’t mind the small size of screen, there is no better option. It’s money wisely spent. You are smartphone covered for at least 5 years.

Anonymous, 04 May 2020$400 isnt exactly mid ranger . $200 are .for 200 you can barley buy a normal phone, not a midranger (I am from europe). And if you want or not, apple is still considered as premium brand where you are also paying this (desktop, laptop, headphones, ...). it is not as easy to find such phone, it has body of ca. 5,3" what is nowadays considered as small phone :) you have enough power to work with it and it has ordinary camera not good not bad ... it is not a bad phone and lot of people will buy it.

My friend has iphone 8, i had galaxy s7 set to 1080p. I watched some vids on youtube in 1080p and the difference was obvious. More detail on s7. Galaxy had 5,1 inches by the way. Apple simply sells overpriced old garbage hardware. I would be impressed if they created 5" phone with small bezels or small notch for a reasonable price.. but no. Apple is not innovative. They figured out how to sell old parts stuck in their factories.. and there you go.

Refurbished, 05 May 2020Nailed it, Nick. I am SO close to giving up on GSMArena as a community. Reading all the cry... moreI feel the same as you too. the fanboy-ism is kinda killing this blog. plus the continuous pushing towards Chinese phones from moderators and unprecedented hate towards apple/iphone.

these people never understood that the need for every person is different. seems like they are intertwined in the display resolution+size/ram size/battery mAh whirlpool.

the bashing on the blog is on a whole new level. no one either apple or xiaomi or whatever is forcing anyone to buy their product. if company X is selling something for $1 doesn't mean company Y is obligated to sell a similar thing for $1. its that simple.

Findecanor, 05 May 2020Neither your nor my eyes have got higher resolution since 2014. If you have a PPI above "Re... moreRetina is ,what apple says it is ; it's their term after all and they have redefined themselves many times for different pixel ratios.

"Le 326 ppi" is a meme invented apple customers satisfied with whatever resolution they were offered.

Pre-2010 iPhones had inferior resoulution of 320 x 480 pixels compared to 480 x 854 pixels of competition. They were sharper , smoother and showed more detail. And Apple of course was feeling heat.
The they just doubled resolution to match them and then pulled out some study to make stay that for years , until they themselves gave up.

That's the whole retina for you.

Anonymous, 04 May 2020There are Android phones with 5.5 inches above screen size in similar form factor. Most will ... moreBut then those phones that are similar to iPhone SE in form factor but have a larger display will be running on Android, which may become a dealbreaker for people looking to buy SE. To break down what I said earlier about the target audience of this phone:

-People who wants to make a switch to Apple ecosystem => Obviously no Android in this case.

-Kids whose friends also use iDevices => Non-iPhones don't benefit from iMessages or FaceTime their friend use to communicate with each other, so Android isn't an option.

-Those trying to replace their older compact iPhones => iPhone SE will provide an IDENTICAL usability, form factor and the display aspect ratio as iPhone 8, 7, 6s and 6. Basically they don't have to change their habit in any way to adopt to this new iPhone. Android phones with taller aspect ratio might give you more screen real estate for the similar form factor, but everything else including UI will be different. So unless they are sick of small display and iOS, then Android will be unlikely a viable option for them.

-Android users who need iPhone for various reasons => Why bother getting another Android phone when they need iOS?

And again, time will tell if you're making a correct guess or not.

Just Some Time, 04 May 2020do you know how small 4.7 inch display is and it even come with a HD screen only this phone is... moreYou're missing the point of this phone, it's not for people who care about all the new tech. Its for people who want to enter the Apple ecosystem or simply want to upgrade their older iphones like iPhone 6s,7...etc. Its also aimed at app developers who just need a cheap iPhone with the latest processor. It is simply a refresh just like last years, and trust me there are thousands of people who prefer the older design.

Dominique, 04 May 2020Were you even for once an Android user who also download apps from Google Playstore which is a... moreYes, I've been an android user for a good few years, my first phone was an android, my last phone before my iPhone 11 pro max was the Honor 10. I loved the phone but as i was comparing it to my iPhone, there are a lot of apps that were badly optimized on the phone, considering it had then, Huawei's best SoC, the Kirin 970. For example, Instagram, was horrible compared to the ios counterpart. It relies on JAVA for its apps and JAVA as a programming language has its limitations owing to its resource intensive nature.

iOS on other hand has its own native runtime and the apps written for it are written in Swift which is based on Objective-C. Unlike JAVA there’s no virtual machine layer between the system and the app, when your run an app it runs on the OS utilizing native runtime libraries, so there’s substantially less resource overhead.
Also, android apps are more likely to get infected from bugs and malware as compared to iOS apps because one main reason behind that is the approval process for developers, which is pretty fast and insecure in Google as compared to Apple's policy.
Lastly, app dev's simply prefer iOS over Android, behind why app developers prefer iOS platform than Android. In which one of the biggest reason is that it’s much easier to develop attractive apps on iOS then android because design plays a key role in iOS apps. App developers can earn more profit from iOS apps, meaning they simply put more effort in to the app. I am not saying that all apps are bad on android, but it is a fact that a lot of apps and games simply run better on iOS rather than android, and there might be cases
of it being the opposite but in android there is just too much hardware to optimize, there is too many variables on androids side of things to get it very nicely optimized.
