WHAT IS IT that people CAN'T DO without 4k60 on a smartphone?imo 4k60p is something that's good if present and not a deal breaker if absent. the main reason they put this feature is because they want to show off the phones processing power. instead they could have just improved the bitrate of 4k24p. this is exactly the same reason why many phones now comes with 8k recording, just to show off their processing power and beefy numbers. sometimes (most of the time) phone manufacturers acts like an amateur photographer or videographer.
sony is afraid of 4k60p for some reason. none of their alpha line, not even a single camera supports 4k60p. but this phone does showcase some impressive potential in camera hardware and software.

A first impression of the endurance of the battery would be great - for me the most important factor when deciding to buy such an expensive phone.

The basic Consumers are fine with 4K60 available on smartphones.
For professionals, 4K60 on smartphones is inferior compared to the 4K60 from the cameras they have.
This is why professionals don't bother with smartphone cameras for their "Professional" work.

And those custom kernel... morestock kernel gave me 8+ hours too with the modem on.
you can go to xda or other forums and ask anyone about their battery life. z5 premium was not bad, that's my point, and with it's 4th generation of 4k smartphones, some people still believe 4k is a battery hog.

I'll give you another chance to correct your lies.
Coz even the Z5 compact with 720p display had terrible battery life.
Z5 Premium with 4k display had even worse battery.
Culprit was the SD810 chip which was a throttling mess that plagued all flagships that year sporting the 810 chip.

The Xperia 1 also has 6.5 4K display and it got only 3330 mAh battery but stil... moreexactly, 4k of vector graphics doesn't even make any difference, back in the days i was able to get up to 10-12 hours of video playback on a z5 premium with a 4k screen, which has a massive 3530mah battery, and nobody complained about 4k being a gimmick.

why does this review feels like someone who hate sony to the core wrote it. sony abondoned the market hyped 48, 64 and 108mp sensors and went for the much better 12mp 1/1.7 sensor with fastest readout speed with better lens and the best autofocus they could provide. 108mp sensor on s20 ultra or any other phone cannot even give a good autofocus or better results. they don't have better lens for that matter. this phone camera is how the smartphone flagship camera hardware should be. not that 108mp sensor that shoots useless 8k at mediocre below 80 mbps bitrate.
you completely abandoned the fact that this phone can shoot 20 stills per second with autofocus and auto exposure.
and about that 70% autofocus coverage area in sensor. i don't know exactly what you didn't understand from that. have you even used any alpha cameras? dualpixel autofocus enabled sensor doesn't provide 100% coverage because of manufacturing and technical limitations. 70% coverage is still an impressive feature.
i am sorry, i have read so many critical reviews about chinese brands deviating from the vanilla android experience but then a company actually gives that experience you suddenly ignore all the benefits.

as far as i know, professionals use 4k60 to produce a buttery 24fps footage, and they usually shoot in hybrid gamma, to manually color grade the video.
otherwise it's a gimmick because there's no real value in 4k60 videos of how your kids eat sandwiches or dog jumps around the lawn
