Vivo just buys it from Samsung for one of their phones.

If I had a choice and Xiaomi phones were offered next to Oppo, OnePlus, Hornor, Huawei, or Vivo, I'd pick the Xiaomi.

cheapsk8, 05 Sep 2020Wow, you seem to be confused about what Bayer means, and what Quad Bayer means too, for that m... moreDon't worry, you didn't spoil anything.. I know that all Bayer sensors need DEmosaicing. But here's the spoiler for you: I'm talking about REmosaicing, which is a fundamentally different process despite carrying a similar name. The former is a colour interpolation process required to construct colour images, whereas the latter is a signal processing that converts quad Bayer's data into an approximation of what native 48MP *would have* captured (which then goes under demosaicing to create full resolution colour images, though this would lead to infamous wormy artifacts, distorted patterns and severe moires). I'm not the one who is mixing terms up, after all.

"thus making it also a proper Bayer sensor"
Haha, no. They literally say on their website that it's Tetracell with some infographics of the filter array it uses. It is still technically a "Bayer" sensor, yes, but the colour resolution is only 12.5MP equivalent despite having 50 million pixels.

1/2.3" sensor can't compete with 1/3" sensor.

Besides, those phones absolutely get destroyed in Ultrawide and telephoto modes.
We aren't living in the era where cameras are judged only based on main cam performance.

I suggest you do some reading on the subject, then come back here. But here's a spoiler: Bayer by definition requires demosaicing.

On GN1, it seems that the specs are almost identical to the OV48C: 1/1.3" sensor size, 1.2 micron pixel, in which case there's no reason that the color filter cells are not 1.2 micron as well, thus making it also a proper Bayer sensor. Notice that its predecessor GW1, a bona fide Quad Bayer sensor, has 0.8 micron pixel size (and thus 1.6 micron color filter cells).

cheapsk8, 05 Sep 2020From xda-developers.com "The 48MP flagship image sensor is built on OmniVision’s PureC... more4-cell is OV's marketing name for Quad Bayer (since QB is a term used by Sony), just like Tetracell is Samsung's way of saying it. I'm assuming that BCFA is, from its name, an equivalent of Samsung's ISOCELL and Sony's DTI technology, therefore is nothing to do with the pixel arrangement.

If it was a native 48MP sensor then it wouldn't have required "hardware remosaic, which provides high-quality 48MP Bayer output" in the first place. You need "remosaic", a.k.a. array conversion signal processing, to construct a full resolution 48MP image BECAUSE it's quad Bayer. The rest of the description looks to be highly inaccurate as there's nothing in OV's press release note and product brief that suggests what XDA is saying is correct.

"How do you think it can capture 48MP at 15 fps?"
Are you suggesting that such fast sensor readout is only possible because it's a native 48MP sensor? Sorry but again that's nothing to do with quad Bayer. Samsung's latest Tetracell sensor GN1, for instance, can output FULL 50MP at 24fps. How about that?

Nick Tagataka, 05 Sep 2020"The OV48C also integrates an on-chip, 4-cell color filter array and hardware remosaic, w... moreFrom xda-developers.com

"The 48MP flagship image sensor is built on OmniVision’s PureCel Plus stacked die technology. It integrates an on-chip, 4-cell color filter array (BCFA – Buried Color Filter Array) and hardware remosaic, which provides high-quality 48MP Bayer output. This is an important differentiation versus sensors such as the IMX586, which have 48MP Quad Bayer sensors. Quad Bayer sensors have less color resolution than standard Bayer sensors. The OV48C seems to be the first mobile image sensor capable of handling 48MP Bayer output, which means it has higher resolution than the other 48MP and 64MP image sensors on the market. It can also output 8K video in real-time."

The hardware is 48MP Bayer, period. Not quad bayer. Whether the software via the chip's ISP or the camera app does optional pixel binning for low-light is not the question. How do you think it can capture 48MP at 15 fps?

I see, so basically you were basing your opinion on your experience with Mi Note 10/Mi 10 and making a comment about Mi 10 Ultra's camera that uses entirely different 48MP sensor and revamped image processing. No wonder I couldn't spot the issues you mentioned in the sample photos included in this review.

The stock app also overprocesses faces and if look at them on a large screen, the artifacts are bad. GCam is much better for shots like that too.

The best part are both of their teleph... moreTo be fair, Mi 10 Ultra uses wider 25mm equivalent lens vs Mate 30 Pro's 27mm so it's already in a disadvantageous position from the start for the detail clarity segment. But yeah I agree that last year's Mate is still impeccable in terms per pixel detail level at least in a well lit environment, the combination of always-on super resolution image fusion and BM3D NR they use can't be beaten so easily. I really wish Xiaomi will adopt similar software processing techniques in future.

As for GCam - On top of the reason you described, since it doesn't even rely on "real" HDR processing that combines multiple exposures, it will struggle a lot in high contrast scenes compared to the stock camera app. I think either darker areas would be too noisy because of excessive shadow lifting or highlights would get burnt badly. On the upside, though, it would handle subject motions better and be more suitable for RAW capture.

The best part are both of their telephotos sensor are one of the biggest around when it comes to a smartphone (And finally confirms that IMX586 are actually 1/2.3" sensor, not a 1/2" as their marketing). Image clarity still not on par with BM3D rendition that Mate 30 Pro ISP currently using, but its a close call.

About Gcam, yes it will eventually got the support as all previous Xiaomi phone does, but with in-chip HDR on the OV sensor, I doubt Gcam will improve much using their software HDR.

I got mine 4 days ago, ordered it off alibaba, took 2 days from Hong Kong to USA. It's been a wonderful phone, one thing to note is you need to mess with permissions for notification issues people have reported, xioami locks apps down for security and your safety, but if you give them all the permissions, WhatsApp, Google, YouTube, display them fine after. Google takes about 3 min to install, and Google pay even works as this is a lvl 1 secure device passed by Google.
