"If you downscale the 50MP photos back to 12.5MP you will see they are indeed sharper than the standard pictures, but we can't say they have that much more detail that's going to worth all the hassle and conversions."

Sorry GSMArena, but the downscaled 12.5MP is definitely WAY more detailed than the pixel-binned 12.5MP. I downloaded all those photos on my PC, downscaled it to 12.5MP resolution, and later compared it to the pixel-binned 12.5MP photos. The difference is clearly day and night - I see little to no oversharpening and even noise reduction with the downscaled photo. Definitely worth all the hassle and conversions, no question about it.

The hardware is actually alright, I definitely like it as it is the only 48MP Quad Bayer camera that can do 8K video recording. The problem is Xiaomi's camera software algorithm - I never really like it.

This is just the right size for a flagship IMO.
Only the Huawei P40 Pro/Pro + and this Vivo are in that bracket.
But the Huawei has no Google and the X50 Pro + isn't available officially outside of China and lacks Band 20 making it poor indoors on all the UK networks. The missing wireless charging just cements this phone as a no from me.
I just wish the US would leave Huawei alone and let us buy the best camera phones there are, if they want to stop them selling inside the US then fine, but why do I have to be punished?

When it comes to camera, Mi 10 Ultra beats out X50 Pro+ in almost every single instance. X50P+ has a very Samsung-like processing which looks fine in a smaller size but terrible as you start zooming in. Mi10U's sharpening is far smaller in radius yet lacks blurriness that X50P+ seems to suffer from, and at night it captures more colours in the sky (though admittedly it's slightly oversaturated) while keeping the noise at bay, something that this Vivo's newest flagship failed to achieve no matter which shooting modes are used. I prefer the less punchy colours from Mi10U during the day as well.
Vivo still did a really good job with the image quality, don't get me wrong. But it's still not on the same ground as Google, Huawei, Apple, or even Sony IMO.

The difference becomes very obvious if you compare the 5th photo from the regular mode and the 2nd one from the full res mode samples, there you should be able to see how much more details the latter resolves than the former even though they are distorted.

"Since the sensor uses a Tetracell (Quad-Bayer) color filter, the high-res images are upscaled versions of their 12.5MP native output."

Oh brilliant, it's the same as what Xiaomi did with the Mi 10 Ultra. I don't think I would capture a RAW photo in full resolution mode on either phone, let's put it that way. But that said, in Quad Bayer pixel-binned mode, I actually prefer the vivo's image processing over the Xiaomi's. I can definitely see the vivo produced a much more vibrant colour and much less oversharpening effect than the Xiaomi. I cannot even agree that the Xiaomi produced better detail, especially when looking at all those trees and grasses.

If I'm going to only use the stock camera app, I'd take the vivo easily. Makes me wonder how both phones perform with a GCam port.
