Nick Tagataka, 22 Oct 2020I just realised that this Mate 40 Pro does NOT have an OIS for its main camera, no wonder phot... moreWhat's embarrassing though is that even p40 has ois , the hype just died for me
Nothing New, 22 Oct 2020- flagship grade screen this time with high brightness ( 800 nits instead 500 of p40 pro ) - ... moreAnd it is 1200€ device it is not cheap , i guess i won't go for it
MadMel, 22 Oct 2020136 # dxomark ..DxoMark is garbage. Better test the phone yourself.
- flagship grade screen this time with high brightness ( 800 nits instead 500 of p40 pro )
- excellent speakers finally huawei did it
- great battery life
- also offers a lot 8n terms of security ( 3d face recognition along with fingerprint scanner )
But camera is bit disappointing , i expected more i realized that main camera doesn't have ois ( why ? Why would make downgrade huawei ? ) And sensor of ultrawide is smaller this time no wonder why they didn't compare it to one of p40 pro and what' s more ? It is still 18mm i feel like they did everything to pro+ model
It is great device but i expected more
The review came out very quickly...wow 😮
Overall this phone looks promising but the lack of GMS. Huawei is the only Chinese brand that I trust. I dismiss other Chinese brands as junk.
are you people crazy? Who bothers about audio jack? Come on... it's very useful
[deleted post]You can still create a lens that has very little distortion if you design them cleverly, though. That's physics for you as well.
Also, there was absolutely no need for you to be xenophobic just to make an argument.
The design is unique, but overall P40 Pro is the better phone between the two. You can get one for discount now, so that's another reason to consider that.
GSMArena, on Mate 40 Pro is there any mode that is equivalent to P40 Pro's AI 50MP mode (which might be revealed when you tap "50MP" icon in the High-res mode)? And if yes, is it possible for you guys to upload some samples for that as well?
Also I'd like to see how the photos look like in 0.85x magnification where the phone is supposed to use the full field of view instead of cropping down the centre portion of the frame, just like you did in P40 Pro Plus review. Thanks!
Excellent review and excellent phone, but I have to ask, what about 60FPS videos? There's no mention of them and as far I as remember, all previous Huaweis couldn't truly do 4K60Fps and they were merely upscaled so that was a mess.
Davy Jones, 22 Oct 2020Google less Non practical curved edge screen Odd screen aspect ratio Ugly front and rear ... moreYeah design kinda ugly agree with you. But still better than Sony tv remote control design.
Nick Tagataka, 22 Oct 2020In summary:
-Huawei is now using a flagship level display with great colour accuracy and 800n... moreI just realised that this Mate 40 Pro does NOT have an OIS for its main camera, no wonder photos look smudgier than those from P40 Pro in low light. How disappointing..
Hopefully GSMArena will review the Pro+ model with OIS as well.
It looks like it does have a pro/manual video mode. In screenshots of the pro camera UI, there is a video icon at the bottom right. Pressing that should enable pro/manual video mode. It's the same on my Mate 20.
The biggest issue after google services is the fact that they're launching this at more than 1000 dollars with Android 10, not even 11
Which tells you a lot where their devices are going

There is no distortion free... moreAs many people have already pointed out, it's a lot easier to design a sharp, distortion-less tiny plastic lenses for phones than to do the same with massive glass lens for compact cameras/DSLRs.

... moreNo other phone this year comes close. I'm sorry, Xperia what?
Anonymous, 22 Oct 2020Because it is easier to fit larger sensor when you use wider lenses.
At real 27mm, module ... more"24mm may be too wide for the taste of many ppl"
That doesn't make much sense as most people probably know how to use a digital zoom function on a phone. Now the lens no longer suffers from severe corner softness issue that P40 Pro's had, it seems illogical to me that they keep cropping the image and upscaling it back to 12.5MP just to get fuzzier final photos.
AnonD-923722, 22 Oct 2020Just somethig to bear in mind, the Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro Plus has different zoom cameras... moreDistortion free = aka software correction you cannot turn off.
There is no distortion free lens on Earth, not even among professional camera lenses.
