Duck of death, 15 Feb 2021If they'd added a dedicated 2x zoom lens, the writer would have complained about the lack... moreThe problem is that unlike some other companies Samsung still doesn't utilise the extra resolution gain from Nonacell nor use any sort of super resolution stacking to improve the digital zoom quality, which means that the image will always look terribly soft below 3x magnification. On top of that, if my understanding is right, S21 Ultra DOES NOT allow you to use its 3x telephoto lens in the portrait mode. Those two shortcomings are pretty fatal for portrait shots - basically the phone isn't capable of taking a sharp photo of a human face while avoiding distortion at the same time (i.e. "zooming in" will get rid of distortion, but then the image quickly turns mushy).
1.7x lens is not relevant in this particular use case because that would roughly equate to 40mm equivalent focal length which isn't very popular for this type of photography, plus no other flagship phone ever had such a telephoto lens.
I have both phones and the difference is almost indistinguishable, there are times the 5x has merits and times the 3x and 10x have them and frankly the biggest upgrade is pdaf on ultra wide, the 108mp are so close I can't tell in pixel peeping

Samsung are slowly moving towards a natural color profile for their images.
Duck of death, 15 Feb 2021If they'd added a dedicated 2x zoom lens, the writer would have complained about the lack... moreBecause Samsung looks like not implementing well the Super Res algorithm as Huawei does. For example, P40/Mate 40 Pro focal length from 1.1x to 4.9x zooming are outstanding quality, barely knows if its using digital zoom or not. Cover a lot of focal length area, working like a kit lens.
AnonD-973296, 15 Feb 2021the Note 20 ultra looks much more natural and less blurry in the corners. for me, the N20U winsLel, it so funny to always see Samsung LOSE. Their new phone loses to their old phone which on in itself don't hold a CANDLE against a phone 6 months older than even it. So basically the S1 ultra loses to a flagship from early 20 when it comes to camera performance (huawaei p40 pro plus).
Such a shame really.
Note 20 Ultra image processing looks more matured, but the colors? Yuck. S21 color reproduction looks more pleasing, but looks like something wrong with its processing. Two words, oversharp & noisy. A waste really, given how big the sensor size is (for a smartphone).
Are they the best smartphone camera around? Not in my book.
Which model of the S21 Ultra did you test? Exynos or Snapdragon?
The Exynos version had terrible 4k and 8k video recording.

Cucumber, 15 Feb 2021Yup, you're right. S21U is worse than N20U. I also encountered similar issues. List o... moredoes it even need that huge of a sensor, why not do what pixel is doing and leave it all to software to the tricks, and plus pixel takes the best photos around
If they'd added a dedicated 2x zoom lens, the writer would have complained about the lack of clarity at 1.7x zoom? I'm sorry, but the whole thing just comes across as chronically negative...
Vaguely paraphrased: "I reluctantly admit the S21 Ultra has a great camera setup".....
21U does worse photos than S20U (can be seen from the review).
21U does worse video than Note 20U.

List of S21U problems that I see from this comparision (maybe some of them can be fixed through software update):
3. Blurry corners (this one looks like the lenses are too wide and badly tuned with sensor)
4. Lot of noise especially in low light situations
5. White Balance is off the spot and make pictures look unnatural
6. Some artifacts in complicated textures (parking lot - license plates)
7. Serious barrel distortions on main lenses.
I think they are trying too much. In phone for a 1500 euro (price in my country) above issues are impermissible (mostly the one with lenses and blurry corners).
Wait, note 20 ultra can only use manual mode for main camera?
This is so lazy from samsung.
Do the compariaon between S20U and S21U.
Because there are a lot improvements in S20U that it got from numerous updates.
