Don't do it!! I've just returned my second Vario 4 and fought to get a PAC. The Touch Pro seems good, but the Vario 4 is a disaster.

        Why?

Well, for one thing, it ships with the caller ID registry key set to 12. UK numbers are not 12 digits long, so it doesn't recognise anyone that calls or texts you. Not a major problem, as it's easy to fix, but indicative.

On the two I've had, they have both frozen up when reaching full charge, unhelpful when charging them overnight and using them as an alarm clock. They have also both frozen up intermittently, during calls, and especially on making or trying to terminate calls on the first. The second was slightly different and appeared to suffer from ADHD. If you turned off push email, it appeared to get bored and claimed to have no signal within 5 minutes, needing a soft reset to get it going again. It also forgot all network settings this afternoon, necessitating a refresh from a Sprite backup to get it working again - this was also coupled with an inability to stay up for longer than 5 mins.

All in all, an otherwise *fantastic* phone seriously ruined by an incompetent conversion. Seriously, it's AWFUL!!!!!

Battery life is much much better than the Vario 2 or 3, the phone is really fast, and the sound quality is really good. Screen is great as well. I’m hoping to take advantage of all these plus points when I move to Vodafone next week.

The MDA Compact IV is released as a Genral HTC Model Called HTC Touch Diamond and the MDA Vario IV is released by HTC as HTC Touch Pro.

The T-Mobile Versions are slightly different as they have flat backs where the HTC release versions have a diamond like back and a few other changes (as mentioned in this review)

I have had both the HTC Touch Pro and the HTC Touch Diamond in my hadn and set them up for people and we have them as working phones in our company but when I phone T-mobile up about upgrading to these phones (I am due to upgrade in two weeks) I am told that they are not available and they have no clue when they will be available.

But the HTC release versions have been out for ages........ I WANT ONE!!!!!

I have used a MDA Compact III for the last 1.5 years because of its reliability I decided to go for the next model up MDA Compact IV. When I recieved the handset I was impressed with the slick look however after 1 day of using it I realised there are some design flaws with the phone.

                    1) When on the contacts list if I try to scroll through using the stylus, rather than the scroll bar moving through the names list, a contact name gets higlighted and its details opened up. This is a design flaw in that the screen is not wide enough. The MDA Compact III did not have this flaw because (a) the screen was slighty wider and (b) the screen does not overlap the border of the phone casing hence allowing the user to drag the stylus along the inner border.

                    2) Scrolling through items on the screen I noticed that it is not as smooth as when using the iTouch/iPhone

I really would have liked this phone but unfortunately I still think it is not as smooth as it should be. I am handing it back and will go back to using my MDA Compact III till I find something more suitable

This looks absolutely beautiful. MDA Vario IV is slighty better. Vario has 256 RAM and 512 ROM. HTC version is due for release for Aug 2008 so i would assume this would come out at the same time. This is the phone to get.
