Samarth INNOV8 User, 20 Jun 2010Damian sir, what is this shutter lag you mentioned that is 150ms?
Is it the same as shutter... moreShutter lag is the time delay between you pressing the button and it opening the shutter to capture the image. This assumes focus is already completed.

Damian sir, what is this shutter lag you mentioned that is 150ms?
Is it the same as shutter speed?
If not, whats the normal shutter speed of N8 cam, and what is the minimum achievable shutter speed in sports modes (if any)?
Anonymous, 19 Jun 2010Hope to see all improvement ;-)
is there improvement done on the speed of processing image?... moreAll image processing is faster. The highlights are in shutter lag, viewfinder lag and AF focusing speed. AF is now around 350ms depending on the environment and shutter lag just 150ms. To put that into context average human reaction time is 250ms. Time between shots will be around 2 seconds depending on shooting conditions.
re high ISO settings we're still playing with the settings here to find the right balance between noise and detail.

danimations, 20 Jun 2010I would like to know if the HDMI output will allow use of other apps on the phone at 1280 x 72... moreCurrently the N8 provides 720p output of photos and video content only. Other apps are the native resolution of 640X360 and then scaled to fill the screen by the TV. It works pretty well in practice with the UI retaining a smooth appearance rather than one which is noticeably pixelated. It maybe be possible though for a developer to potentially create a HD enabled application in the area of multimedia perhaps. This is not my area of expertise though.

I would like to know if the HDMI output will allow use of other apps on the phone at 1280 x 720 on an external monitor/TV? My current LG Viewty Smart allows this, but with the exception of J2ME apps. Where are the limitations with HDMI output on the N8, if any?

and also noise??? when using high ISO.

Typically as you change /add something new it will have an impact on another layer of sw somewhere, then that will impact another and so on. All of those layers then need to be tested etc.
We have some new features or improved existing ones, so it's not as if we've done nothing in this area ;)
Here are som examples:
- HDMI capability which provides 720p output of videos and images.
- Stereo [ambient] audio recording
- Active hyper focal distance control
- improved red-eye detection/removal
- Improved face detection
- auto fill-in flash for only when subject is within the flash range
- gestures to fast zoom and to change primary quality/aspect ratios
- Super fast AF
- Disable shutter sound independently from profiles
- set your own default settings for camera start-up
- 16:9 image capture
- High performance e3x digital zoom in video
We've also spent a lot of time improving the performance e.g. shutter lag, viewfinder delay, AF speed etc etc.

@ Damian: Sir, I'll purchase the N8, provided it releases in time... Optics/ Hardware so far seem great.
But, I would like to know why Nokia does not seem much interested in software part of the Camera options...
Low-res Panorama shots, Burst Shots, 120 Frame per second (Slow motion) Video Mode, Manual Auto-focus control, etc. are all Firmware related, so why can't we get it?
We know hardware won't change now.. But Firmware, isn't it modifiable before shipment starts?
Can we get any of these features when it releases now?
@damian dinning
i've seen all the hands on videos and all the comments and can only conclude that n8 can single handedly defeat iphone 4 and htc evo. Very good job. love your work.
thank you
you mean optical zoom like present in:
Altek Leo (14MP with 3 Optical zoom)???
Nokia and other mobile phone companies always manufactured highers MP of their cam BUT the absense is NO OPTICAL ZOOM which is important. Digital zooming will make the captured photo turn into blurry... Autofocus in not enough either.
Looking forward to Nokia to add OPTICAL ZOOM to their mobile phone cam. Even in 5MP with 3x optical zoom is already enough.
Thank you!

the Nokia N8 is scheduled to ship from Q3 and the price will be 370 euros excluding taxes and local subsidies where applicable.
re battery removal. Nokia recommends you take it to an authorised service facility for battery replacement.

Hi,
I have a few questions:
1. The battery is non-swappable. So we can't change the battery at all?
2. When will it be launched in India? Will it be Q3 as well?
3. How much will be the approximate price?
Currently using 5800. Love it. But this is one looks much better with so many more cool features!
Kind regards

Damian Dinning, 13 Jun 2010Hi,

Well, I googled about optical stabilisation a little bit, and found that it will be quite soon, hehe. Just a info, maybe for next phone, haha.
http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/25083/camera-phones/
Btw, I love N82 and this one (that I have waited, hope will be like N82 had been), don't be shy to put little extra fat on camera phones. They are anyways mostly bought by geeks, hehe. And, I must say that a little feather phones (like N82) lies better in the hand.
Regards.

Nokia fan, 12 Jun 2010Hi Damian, you said that N8 uses some kind of video stabilisation, so im curious, is it optica... moreHi,
The Nokia N8's video stabilisation is digital and no there is no stabilisation in stills.
Why this is will take a very long post. To provide a quick answer for now I'll say the following.
Digital video and image stabilsation work completely differently. Video stabilisation can be made to work quite effectively. It works by trying to line up consecutive frames to each other therefore effectively filtering out any unintended movement.
In the case of stills though it works by combining multiple frames to create on sharp one. Thus far this has created many problems.
Currently optical stabilisation which would overcome many of these is too big to include in such products.
You should bear in mind however, that any form of stabilisation is NOT the solution to the problem of low light camera and/or subject movement. It can help but it's not the solution. The reason for this is that it can't compensate for any subject movement, only camera movement. And it can only provide a certain range of improvement, although still worthwhile.
The only real solution (apart from use of xenon flash) is to increase the shutter speed so camera and/or subject movement is not noticeable.
In the case of subjects being within the flash range this is the best solution currently for shake free images. Outside of this range and in very low light all current stabilisation methods will not provide any benefit.
BTW, you should be aware that when xenon flash is used digital stabilisation systems are no longer effective, at least the ones I've seen so far. AFAIK they are disabled when xenon flash is used because you can't take two images both with flash in quick succession to combine multiple images to create one crisp one.

Damian Dinning, 03 Jun 2010Yes there is a separate setting in the camera settings to disable the shutter sound, although ... moreHi Damian, you said that N8 uses some kind of video stabilisation, so im curious, is it optical or digital stabilisation... And why it doesn't have that stabilisation for images, but only for video?
Thanks.

and yeah, its soo dark that a white screen should provide an enough ... moreI checked it last night. It was brighter than using a white display and despite being red it was easier to see with. However, I must point out that this LED was never designed to be used in such a way. I therefore would be unable to comment on the life span if used in this way if someone where to make a suitable application simply because as said it was never intended to be used that way.
