But then .. I'd have agreed if the rear side was totally on a single flat surface like for e.g. .. the sony ericsson K850i or the N82 .. its already protruding (ugly) .. and not really pretty and on top of it I'm gonna miss stuff like an LED (forget dual-LED .. something is better than nothing) for video-recording, a kickstand .. a lens cover .. I'd have gladly had a few millimeters more for features like these which Nokia has always offered (expectations u see.. )
The point am trying to make is .. For those who dont prefer a camera-spealized mobile .. these things wouldnt matter .. but since N8 is the pinnacle on the camera front .. it'd only make more sense to have it complete there and given the real estate of the screen with AMOLED .. a kick stand would would have made all the more sense .. and a cameraphone where camera is my focus .. the lens cover is really important to me regardless the glass is scratch-resistant or not (and its not exactly scratch-proof is it?)
I know the world has 6.5b people (not really .. I was thinking around 4-5) .. and its not easy satisfying them all .. or not possible at all .. but the question is .. how many want the N8 and in those how many are not satisfied without the lens cover and the LED .. you have one right here!
That said .. I still think its a great device and gonna sell loads .. and am happy as a Nokia fan .. but not really sure if its the thing for me .. though it almost is ..
But really great job on it so far .. and all the best .. :-)
@ Damian Dinning:
Thanks Sir, for the reply. My impressions about the set and its features are very positive...
One last set of queries though:-->
1. It seems components are fitted too tightly inside the set.. So, is the set reliable enough, specially the camera components?
If its accidentally dropped from moderate heights (say 1 metre), won't it cause any damage?
2. When the non-removable Battery comes at the end of its recharge cycles (like every other battery), Where can we get the Battery replaced? Nokia Care? Can we replace battery on our own?
3. What are the usage-heat levels? Packing components too tightly should make it heat up a lot... Does it?
4. Any other comments about day to day reliability? I'm planning to take it for some 2-3 years.
And yes, since every answer is not officially released by Nokia, you can talk subjectively too as you've used it...

re LED and video light.
There is an amber LED by the side of the xenon flash, it’s used exclusively for auto focus assist. There is no separate LED for video usage.
Some important points: The only way you are likely going to get sufficient illumination from LED’s over a usable distance available today would be if you had a dual LED. Single LED in our experience whilst may seem bright to the human eye to the camera over anything greater than say around 1m just is not going to provide any benefit in video, it would have been a tickbox solution and nothing more than that.
We simply didn’t have the space for the Dual LED as well as Xenon, the area around the camera is really packed!
I know some of you will say that I’d rather the device was a few mm’s thicker etc but we have to balance the design against the functionality, otherwise people will say it’s ugly and then that will influence sales, which of course we need to factor in.
But we continue to listen and continue to try and develop the perfect solution, but for some, sometimes that’s just not possible. In a world of over 6.5b people that’s hardly surprising.
The final point which is important is that we’re using pixels which have a surface area almost 50% larger than broadly comparable devices so you should find video is quite good in low light, but we’re still fine tuning that area right now, so I honestly can’t make any statements how good. I can say in my experience shooting at night the Bay Bridge in San Francsico recently I was pretty happy with the low light performance.

1. What about the Sound Quality in Earphones/ Ouput? Will it be high quality?
I haven't compared the performance between these three. All I can comment on my personal experience as this is very subjective area. I found the performance to be very good. My initial reaction was one of being very impressed (I've used many of our Nseries products)
2. What OS's would the Symbian^3 be backward compatible with?
Will it take Symbian OS 9.3 or OS 9.4 Apps & games?
I can only comment on personal experience here and what I've heard from colleagues. I have heard people using various apps from S60 5.0 and had no problems. However I don't anyone can provide a blanket guarantee in this area.
3. Any idea about the Battery Life of N8, while using its features on regular basis?
I guess it should provide 1 day full of usage?
I believe you should, but would need to know more about your usage to comment further. There are a number of areas where there has been significant improvement e.g. playing videos and especially music playback (circa 50 hours playback). The AMOLED display potential helps too, depending on the visual content.

@ Damian Dinning:
Sir,
It's nice to hear from you in GSM Arena Comments Section. In past, I owned Nokia 6670 and N91, and maybe this N8 would be my next handset after my ill-firmwared Samsung INNOV8 is sold somehow..
I had a few queries about the N8:-->
1. What about the Sound Quality in Earphones/ Ouput? Will it be high quality?
And if yes, would it be balanced like Nokia 5800 or bass-pumped like the legendary Nokia N91, in terms of frequency response?
(Personally speaking, I miss the N91's quality, in anything I tried from mobiles to dedicated Music players.
I would love this phone, if it matches N91's quality & frequency response.)
Can you do something about Audio Quality now, at this stage of development?
2. What OS's would the Symbian^3 be backward compatible with?
Will it take Symbian OS 9.3 or OS 9.4 Apps & games?
3. Any idea about the Battery Life of N8, while using its features on regular basis?
I guess it should provide 1 day full of usage?
I would like to thank you for taking this time out to help us. I wish you best of luck.
Ok,love this phone,but.. As usual, there's something i'm not too enthusiastic about, and it's the non-removable battery,i'd rather have a phone that creaks with age than a phone that blocks and i have to wait until battery's out of juice to restart the phone. Will there be a reliable reset little hole then that will ,well, reset the phone or better yet, restart so that i don't lose all my settings ?
uibo, 22 May 2010Have they done anything to reduce the rolling shutter effect in videos? We are minimizing it but this is a limitation of being able to read all the pixels in one go which ks why we use mechanical shutters for still images.
You will see this even in DSLR's. I expect in the future at some point this problem will be eliminated. In most cases in my experience it's unnoticeable with the N8.
