display issues i think are limited to certain batches of the xz. there are xz's with better viewing angles and contrast levels. xz uses sharp and jdc panels. the sharp ones are generally better. they look like the butterfly's i think.

i just don't understand why sony is using those inferior displays on some—well many of their units.

Yeah, unfortunately the display quality on Sony phones is really surprisngly weak. I have an Arc and believed the marketing hype. I still like the phone but oh gosh, the display.. and it seems like they're still using the same kind of display on Xperia T and now Xperia Z, just with slightly better contrast which doesn't help it much. Other than the screen (and battery life under stress) the Xperia Z is a very good phone. The best one Sony had so far. Things are not looking good for them since the Galaxy S4 is around the corner and it looks like the Xperia Z couldn't sell as well as we all thought, clearly it's the last few days for Sony until they'll have to consider MAJOR price cuts.

Unless Galaxy S4 will have the rumored S3-ish soap-holder design. In that case Sony may simply win with design.

I can confirm that the screen is of extremely high quality, judging by history, Sony phones have always been criticized for viewing angles by professional reviewers, but soon after everyone comes to find that the screen has no such issues. Reviewers tend to like the idea of spoiling the user experience as well as letting gaps for competitors to sell their products

AnonD-85611, 12 Mar 2013Looks like Sony is the worst manufacturer when we are talking about screens, it's unbelievable... moreTrue. They have to:
1) Increase screen quality
2) Increase sound quality
3) Make better cameras (I mean that 13MP is good, but that's about it)
4) Use the latest processors. It's so lame that 1 month after the release of Xperia Z, Snapdragon 600 comes out (inside some of the devices, like G Pro or HTC One). And then 800 and NVidia Tegra 4.

Nice review! Though the real competition is still ahead for Xperia Z. Unfortunately it uses a little outdated processor, so I only hope that its design, build quality and water resistance are going to play some role.

Xperia Z sucks. Xperia ZL rulez! (More compact and ergonomic, more durable material, likely better loudspeaker, IR blaster).

Its how you integrate the chip to work and by far what i see Sony has done an excellent job in integrating the chip!

HTC's video appears sharper because of more aggressive image sharpening.... Yeah right GSMarena.
It appears sharper but yet it lacks in so much details compared to the Xperia Z.
Just look at the branches and grass to your left.
With HTC, it appears blocky while you clearly distinguish what is what in the Xperia Z.

definitely my XZ wins.
HTC must bring its ONE to compete with Z
and of course the daily interest on the main page will tell you who is the real winner.

Of course in benchmarks htc will always be a little slower because they are the Firsts to introduce new tech,so,after a half a year,or a year some other producer comes with "something faster".htc is still the king of smartphones, and let's not forget is water proof also(not like xperia, but it is certified) and will get the new Sense 5 soon.

Looks like Sony is the worst manufacturer when we are talking about screens, it's unbelievable, even LG and HTC is light years ahead in terms of contrast and viewing angles.
