I really have to ask. Does anyone really use the IR blaster? I know there a few but in term of percentage, does that even count half of the whole Note user community? I just don't get that one feature people missed. People rarely watch tv anymore anyway. Maybe that coming from me as a younger generation but i don't know. Your choices. Most of us are multimedia consumers who watch everything online. No one have the superior urge to watch tv instead of using their smartphone. Our tv just gathering dust.
TheNeighbor, 18 Aug 2015Yes, I agree with you. Some strange experiment to testing the market. As I said in previous po... moreSamsung wishes to beat Apple in the smartphone arena and their market research shows that apple is on top because they do not want to give their customers what they want (expandable memory, removable battery, open software systems, connectivity to devices outside their ecosystems). Apple dictates what the consumer needs i.e security and aesthetics. Premium price tag means a premium looking (shiny) gadget. People with more money than sense purchase their products and if celebrities wave them about on the media, then marketing is taking care of itself. Apple realised that people are sheep and have made their money because of this. Samsung wants to follow suit, I don't blame them, they are not a western company but know the big money is in the west and in the west people seem to prefer products that look like apple products. Apple had to figure this out, Samsung just has to act on it.
A Note 5 with removable battery and expandable memory gives the device 5+ years of life expectancy. The processor is rapid, 4GB RAM will definitely be relevant 3 to 5 years from now, you might even see a 1TB micro SD??? A product like this would effect the tablet market even the PC/laptop market. How would that work as a business model?
Please realise that SAMSUNG is not your friend named SAMMY, it couldn't care less about what you want. It wants your money and if you are not forking it over some other consumer will.
My advice is buy a Chinese Phone from the GRAY market, the one that runs a fake android and fake IOS and somehow also loads windows 10. Has an IR blaster. 400 MP camera. Is waterproof. Under 6mm thick. Has A Shatterproof diamond screen. Connects to any digital device and gives you a blowjob when you need one....dream on!
Anonymous, 18 Aug 2015"Neglecting" the absent of sd slot and removable battery, don't you think this still... moreYes, I agree with you. Some strange experiment to testing the market. As I said in previous posts, I think they can't come up with anything to top the features of the Note 4, and they'll be just be criticized with the same removable back and no integrated wireless charging. So, they listened to the iPhone (shiny gold, internal memory options, fingerprint scanner), Sony (glass back), HTC (metal) and strangely BlackBerry (ridiculous physical QWERTY keyboard) fans.
I could understand them doing this with the S6, but not the Note series, even alienating EU customers by NOT launching it there. And here it is - a very confused Note that has been striped off the souls of the previous Galaxy Notes.
Crazy? You bet. They have purposely did all the changes and trimmed features to attract (?) attention of fans of Samsung's competitors. Even implementing nano SIM for iPhone uers. And look at the timing - to yank potential iPhone 6S buyers - typical iPhone users who "don't-know-better-don't-care". All they know looks better than the iPhone, has no plastic back (screams premium to them), no removable battery (they need to use their powerbanks), no infrared (yes, there's a remote controlled that came with the TV), no memory expansion (it will confuse them navigating files).
OMG. I bet they have a secret version that has everything we want in 6 months.
Anonymous, 18 Aug 2015"Neglecting" the absent of sd slot and removable battery, don't you think this still... moreNote series is know for it's maximum feature and flexibility. I true Note series user won't bother if the back still remain with plastic. The Note series device still sell like hot cake even-though it is made of plastic. Most other phone in Android camp still made of plastic as well, despite being bash and criticize, actually is not a big issue either, phone just work fine despite being made of plastic.
Samsung is just too follow with the review that bashing them.
Look at what iPhone has been offering? They don't even consider to go with removable battery and Micro SD slot, despite the critic and bashing.
No matter what is being made, there sure going to be critics. But please don't follow Apple way to limit user freedom, and respect the reason why people choose Samsung Galaxy Note over iPhone.
mkara, 18 Aug 2015Don't buy these smartphones with 3000mAh batteries until they use 4000mAh replacable batteries.Well said man. Lets stick with LG G3, G4 or Samsung Note 4 as for now.
AnonD-8295, 18 Aug 2015Note 5 = 7.6m,no MicroSD slot A8 (Samsung thinness phone) = 5.9mm,support microSD slot The A... moreThat is the most perfect comparison by far. They can put microsd slot in an even thinner A8 and not in their thicker new flagship? Okay, maybe the Note5 Spen taking the space can be an excuses but S6 edge+ have no excuses to not put microsd. Though, actually the spen doesn't seem to take that much of a space considering they still able to make a dual sim version with two slot for the sims in one tray.
Note 5 = 7.6m,no MicroSD slot
A8 (Samsung thinness phone) = 5.9mm,support microSD slot
The A8 is so much cheaper than Note 5.
Of course processor and display wise not so good but seriously A8 is more worthy of Samsung "flagship" tittle
"Neglecting" the absent of sd slot and removable battery, don't you think this still the best Note Samsung could give. I think they just want to make glass phone at least once just to put into their history book. We certainly don't want to hear people saying "You never make glass back phone what do you know?"
Anonymous, 18 Aug 2015if samsung wanted to compete with iphone it should not have ditch micro sd plot, removable batt... moreIt is sad to know that now Apple fans has more reason to consider iPhone 6+ rather than buying a Samsung Galaxy Note 5, because it is almost same now regarding the hardware spec and outlook. Note 5 doesn't hold any significant advantage over iPhone.
if samsung wanted to compete with iphone it should not have ditch micro sd plot, removable battery,IrDA and fm radio.
It's funny to see fans comment here on supporting the no micro sd slot and non removable battery implementation from Samsung.
Suddenly, all these feature that are removed from previous generation are consider as "improvement".
We want the real Samsung please, not the one that imitating iPhone.
The micro sd slot, removable battery, and Android OS openness are the reason I choose Samsung. Now I have to look else where, LG G4 is the only Samsung imitator here?
Anonymous, 18 Aug 2015Sony Xperia Z3+ is thinner than Note 5, and is almost as thin as S6, but Z3+ has micro SD slot... moreI never mention sd slot. I also dislike the fact that Note 5 have no sd slot. Btw, xperia z3+ have smaller 2930mah battery. I think you meant xperia Z3 without the plus.
Anonymous, 18 Aug 2015The overall ergonomic is the main point here. Making the phone thinner by competition doesn't... moreYou intepreting my comment all wrong. What I'm trying to imply is that thicker is better and Samsung should learn from HTC. And about the thick bezel thing, I am okay with that too. That why I said its HTC trademark. Its the only thing that differentiate them from the rest of the smartphone market. Everyone else busy with bezel-free design while HTC stick to their design. Yes, Taiwanese brand. I'm also half Taiwanese and we still considered ourselves chinese, as in a 'race'. :p

Oppo R7 Plus is nearly as thin as Note 5 too, but still included with micro SD slot.
So Samsung only excuse to remove the micro SD slot is just by being thinner than others?
Anonymous, 18 Aug 2015I like HTC performance too. The only successful Chinese brand. Their phone always look bulky w... moreThe overall ergonomic is the main point here.
Making the phone thinner by competition doesn't means it feel better in hand.
I know those thin phone look cool, but not really good in handling for real life usage.
9mm thick is just on the center part, but it is much thinner on the side. The design enforce on the curve back, which improve the ergonomic in hand. Being the thinnest in the market doesn't means it is a better phone. I know it is not having the thinness bezel, but it is not that thick either, you still can use it with one hand easily, but just distract your eye, where you can't show it with your friend, and people surrounding you of because of thick bezel and thick dimension.
And HTC is Taiwanese brand, not Chinese brand.
mkara, 18 Aug 2015Don't buy these smartphones with 3000mAh batteries until they use 4000mAh replacable batteries.keep dreaming about making a replaceable battery! all phones are heading to a new generation about not having a removable one
Anonymous, 18 Aug 2015I don't agree on part of your saying. Take a look at HTC, they omitted the removable batter... moreI like HTC performance too. The only successful Chinese brand. Their phone always look bulky with super thick bezel which is their trademark. I noticed how their flagship never be made thinner than 9mm. They proved thicker is better. Samsung should learn from them.
Anonymous, 18 Aug 20151. The phone manufacturer never advises user to remove the battery when the phone is frozen or... moreI totally not agree with what you are saying. Everything has pros and cons, but please don't try tell something just to cover the cons that is caused by the changes.
1. This is the advantage of the removable battery, and it is implemented on all the phone before iPhone. Nothing wrong if you remove battery if the phone hang. Removing battery is to cut of the power, similar to how phone with non-removable battery work by long pressing the power button to cut of power. Forget those user manual. This technique has been practiced to all phone with removable battery long before phone being made with non-removable battery. Then, you can also swap out the battery easily if the battery is dead, spare battery come handy here. Forget those big and heavy power bank. Then for non-removable battery dead scenario, your only option is to send it back to shop or service center to get it changed, and you have to be patiently wait it to be changed, it may take days or weeks, leaving you in a condition where you cannot use the phone.
2. I know it is possible to bring out your heavy hard drive, small USB thumb drive , and OTG cable for all the memory stuff. But compare to Micro SD card, which one is more portable and practical? What if you forget to bring out your big and heavy hard drive, small USB thumb drive, and also forget to bring the OTG cable? By the way, Micro SD card is inserted to the phone, much smaller form factor, and can be operated with much lower power consumption. OTG consume much more battery to power up the USB device. You decide which one is the better option.
3. Regarding the sim card type, this one is debatable. But imho, micro sim is much easier to be handled, where nano sim need to be inserted with sim tray, and you need an ejecting tools to eject the tray. Micro sim on the other hand, can be designed by just inserting the sim card to the sim slot, and cover the sim by back over, or some flaps, save for any sim ejecting tools. I have owned both phone with micro and nano sim, and I found the nano sim tray is of stupid design, where if you miss handle it, making the tray broken, or missing the sim tray, you won't able to insert the sim card anymore. I know you can buy the sim tray after market, but wouldn't the micro sim slot is much less troublesome? where micro sim tray is non-removable, and it can be inserted by pressing the sim into it easily without any possible hazard of missing part? Nano sim is not that much smaller than Micro sim, but the disadvantage is more than a micro sim. Again, you judge on the practicality.
mkara, 18 Aug 2015Don't buy these smartphones with 3000mAh batteries until they use 4000mAh replacable batteries.these removalbe backs don't matter to most of the people so stop distracting others. battery timing would still be better than other flagship smartphones.
Ender, 18 Aug 2015Well first let me say that I too like many other do not like the fact the there is no expendab... moreI don't agree on part of your saying.
Take a look at HTC, they omitted the removable battery, but they bring back the expandable memory option, so it is not an excuse of uni body design to exclude the memory slot. And HTC has been remarkably recognized to have the best build quality on Android camp that challenge iPhone, which utilizing uni body metal design.
I know the phone can work faster on their new build in memory, but it is not an excuse to totally omitted the Micro SD slot.
