Does anyone know when Samsung will be releasing a high-end tablet that has an S-pen?

I've been using the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) tablet released in 2013 for some time now; it's a very good tablet.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 is also a good tablet, but I would never buy it because it doesn't have S-pen support and it's battery is weak compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition).

Until Samsung releases a better tablet (with a 9.7" screen) than my 2013 Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) tablet, I think I'll hang on to the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) tablet for as long as possible.

Samsung knows how to make very good tablets, but sometimes it seems not to pay attention to what consumers really want.

Bro@home, 17 Aug 2016Frequencies listed for all models to my knowledge will only work properly for data and cellpho... moreThanks for your warning, Bro@home.

I currently use a 2012 Galaxy S-III (or S-3) (Model SGH-I747; micro-Sim card) on the AT&T network. But for years I've wanted a much BIGGER device (e.g., for easier Web browsing/texting). Now I read online (including in this conversation) that certain tablets can be used as phones. Great. But maybe it is not so easy?

I see that the Tab S2 is available:

        1. WiFi only. Obviously skip that.
        2. "International" unlocked GSM/LTE versions (e.g., directly from Samsung). (no warranty)
        3. LTE versions with certain carriers like AT&T or Verizon (e.g., from Best Buy).

I have previously spoken to Samsung customer service about purchasing unlocked, “international” phones (e.g., the new Galaxy Note 7) for use in the USA. They warned me that if service/repair was needed, the phone might have to be shipped overseas. AT&T would not support it. Then there is the issue of full bandwidth compatibility. My preliminary research shows that while there may be overlap and compatibility, often considerable, between GSM/LTE phones intended for various countries, one needs to be wary. When some bands are missing on some phones, could it be a problem in “fringe” reception areas and/or when traveling between cells?

That said, according to the website http://willmyphonework.net/ most Tab S2 LTE versions (both screen sizes) SHOULD theoretically work on the AT&T network for 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE bandwidths. But as you point out, that connectivity is probably intended for Internet and texting capabilities, when Wi-Fi is not available, and not specifically for cell phone use per se.

Yet some people online claim to be having little or no problem using an S2 as a phone. Some say you can just pop in your AT&T-compatible Sim. But you are saying it is not that simple, and I believe you.

Clearly the US carriers do NOT want to encourage people to use tablets as phones (as may be happening increasingly more frequently in other countries). For obvious reasons they want you to buy two devices and, more importantly, two service plans.

Bottom line: Do you think that if I am (a) in a strong cell phone service area (urban parts of California) almost all the time; (b) willing to exclusively use an external earpiece/microphone; (c) OK with sacrificing some innovative phone-specific-related apps (what might they be?), performance (compared to the latest phones), and convenient portability; and (d) planning to stay with AT&T, I should be able to use an LTE Tab S2 in place of my standard smartphone?

I’d be glad to hear from any and all people who have successfully transitioned to using a Tab S2 (or other tablet) as a phone in the USA. How did you do it? What service are you using? What steps and accessories did you have to employ? Did you have to unlock or “root” the Tab S2 in order to add necessary software? What Android version is best (for cell phone use)—the original Lollypop or the newer Marshmallow? (I am still only using Jelly Bean on my old cell phone.) Et cetera…

        Thanks.

PS – If I were to get a Tab S2, in order to slow the inevitable obsolescence I would also want a 64GB version that accepts a 256GB microSD card. But that scenario doesn’t seem to exist yet in an LTE version Tab S2 (just in Wi-Fi-only models), right? I notice that Samsung seems to be “dumping” its stockpile of 32GB Tab S2 models (offering online sales). Is this in preparation for an upgrade in hardware?

And then I would still have the decision of whether to choose an 8- or 9.7-inch version--topic for another day.

Frequencies listed for all models to my knowledge will only work properly for data and cellphone on AT&T networks. Any other GSM carriers in US will not function as expected. Us Carriers have full control over data and Voice over cell. These models from non us sources (international) do have a cell phone App that functions as a Speakerphone and depending on your carrier system (GSM/CDMA) allows you to make and receive calls like any normal cell phone with exceptions. Because most foreign frequencies do not match US carrier frequencies, calls and data through US carrier Cellular systems will be sporadic at best. I had the t815 international model unlocked from Amazon. Was T-Mobile UAE version. Phone functioned to some degree, cellular data on listed 3G was non-existent. That device was returned as non functional. All US versions of Galaxy Tab S2 are Wi-Fi only if not connected to a carrier. Carrier version devices are Wi-Fi and cellular Data only. No GSM carrier sells the device with speakerphone capability. All US carriers list Samsung's information on frequencies and also lists frequencies for international versions. That information covers literally all frequencies in the world I assume. That said however, I rather doubt the device could be bought as stated. Very misleading information that makes buying a cellular device as a Tablet and a phone in US a costly and extremely frustrating experience.
                Good luck with this information.

Oranais, 30 Jul 2016Coming from Tablet Z of Sony and I want to buy a new tablet,I'm hesitating between the Samsung... moreI have the Tab S 10.5 LTE and it is the most amazing 2 year old tablet out there. The S2 is newer and has basically the same hardware. Ok so the processors are like couple hundred Mhz faster but the S2 is a true octa-core rather than 2 quad cores like in the Tab S. Wont notice much difference there. The Tab S has a better screen pixel density and battery life. I can use a 256GB micro SD and I read that S2 is 128GB. What you will notice is the graphics processor which is 2 generations newer in the S2. Get the S2. I kind of think the 10.5 screen is too big at times. Why would you not always get the newest tech? But if its a big diff. i cash then the Tab S will be solid for the next 2 years at least. All ofther specs are the same or you wont notice. I heard that I can't get marshmallow and you yes but Sprint told me otherwise plus you can always do the boot copy flash method. Oh ..noinfared on the S2 if you are a user.

Overall it is a good tablet. The only thing i would complain about this tablet is the volume button. After using it for a couple of months my both up and down volume button stopped working.
