Covering the selfie camera makes the screen go darker, and revealing it increases the brightness again. This takes 1-3 seconds and works all the time, not just when unlocking.
So it sure looks like the camera is involved, but I have no idea about the specifics. Is the camera taking an internal selfie every 3 seconds to study the light conditions? Or is there a normal ambient light sensor functionality integrated into the camera?
Does it have a light sensor? I read that it use front camera and dont have light sensor, is that true?
It's Field Pro cousin debut with a 1000 dollar price tag.

Yes, an enterprise phone like this does not need a high end camera module, as delivery drivers and police officers are not meant to participate in photography contests.
That being said, there is a long tradition of enterprise devices trying to get away with really looow end components at extravagant prices, justified by "serious enterprise people don't care about niceties". E.g. Thinkpads are known for terrible screens to this day - "this is efficient, as it is good enough for Excel!" The actual users would probably appreciate a decent mid-range component over something that barely does the job, and such components would mean just a few bucks more, but neither the manufacturer's bean counters nor the purchasing departments are willing to take that hit.
Not sure where the XCover Pro ranks in this; I care little about image quality, so for me it really does not matter, I cannot tell the difference anyway. It just would not surprise me if the camera was below many people's standards. On the other hand I think the phone as a whole offers a lot of bang for the buck and is way more attractive to consumers than the average enterprise phone.

Perhaps because I'm a hobby photographer using a system camera and the pictures I can take and postprocess using that dedicated device are much better, really day-and-night to what even the best cell phone can do. I can't care less about the camera on a phone beyond that being able to capture a document or so if I need. To me, a phone is a phone - it shall do calling, SMSing, have a ton of good apps include those for navigation, offline maps, etc. And it shall do it reliably, even in bad weather and extreme conditions. All that camera and gaming race on smartphones is BS. What the heck does anyone need selfies for. Sorry for my bluntness on this.
bubu, 13 Mar 2020Expensive. For 140 I can buy xz or xz1 and a cover case. But, can you remove the back cover within a few seconds? Or get monthly security updates past the second year of its release?

Also because it has a removable battery, the very feature they repeatedly said won't be coming back. lol

First the Kyocera Duraforc... moreWhat do you mean by saying locked to U.S.?
Its available in Europe, for example, notebookcheck even made review on it.
Long story Short, good phone with few small drawbacks.
My opinion after playing with its camera in the store and comparing it with my Galaxy S8 - not worth the money if youre looking for good, durable Android with decent cameras. Yes, its meant for outdoor workers and mobile sales Personnel etc, but come on, adding cameras that are as good as they were 3 years ago was off the cards for Samsung and thats a shame, they missed great opportunity with Xcover pro.
Why is it that all the really good phones are locked to US only?
First the Kyocera Duraforce Pro 2, now this...
European reviews have been popping up on youtube and some say the camera is bad. But then again, I'll just have to put up with it since Samsung is busy recycling 9611 cpus and put the nice cameras/parts on fragile/pretty looking consumer grade devices.
I'd love to see a full review and a drop test with at least 10 drops from good height. I'm hoping to see whether this phone:
a) can survive more than a few drops from 1.5-2m (over a couple of years it's bound to fall more than once)
b) can work as a decent mid-range device, replacing my aging S7 in a rugged case.
A good phone in a rugged case is both bigger and heavier than Galaxy Xcover Pro. And a thin case doesn't provide much in terms of protection. So I wonder if Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro can be a decent replacement to an old Samsung Galaxy S7.

Got the dual-SIM EU XCover Pro model.
Work fabulously. GPS etc. is particularly fast and accurate (inc. Galileo, GLONASS and Beidou so not surprising). Very solid. Very customisable. Nice camera. Dual-SIM works nicely. Latest Android. Can't fault it.
