Tried the Galaxy Y in Samsung showroom yesterday and compared with the Galaxy Mini (Pop). The accelerometer (orientation sensor) did not work smoothly, device had to be completely tilted before it worked. Also, I found typing quite difficult on the phone even in landscape mode, since even in the landscape mode, the screen width is quite small.
To put it succintly, the experience with the Y was underwhelming. The Pop was somewhat better. I'd come ready to buy but postponed the decision.
Later in the day, I tried out the Nokia C5-03 resistive touch keyboard. Typing was smoother, although it did not seem to have word prediction feature. The screen was also more joy to look at at.
Bottomline, the screen is important. Basic android models are not upto snuff in this department yet. My suggestion would be to wait for upcoming Samsung (plus icecream sandwich) and Nokia World events, and then decide based on the new handset announcements.
Only if the Nokia 500 were cheaper, I'd go with that phone over the Y.

Bought this phone in Mumbai, India on Monday (10th Sept) for my 10 year old. It came with a 2 Gb SD card. There is no mention of an accelerometer or RAM in the GSMARENA spec sheet, so I was perfectly prepared for there to be none, but on turning the phone the keyboard goes into landscape mode, so I guess there is one. Also, the phone shows 290 Mb of RAM available. That is an odd figure, & is a bit more than the 256 Mb of the Ace. Overall, the phone impresses, & certainly does not look like a budget android. The first thing my kid did was to install 3 different versions of Angry birds & other games like fruit ninja from the android market through wi-fi , so it is capable of these games. Because of the smaller screen real estate, the QVGA resolution is not appparent unless you look at it very closely, since the linear resolution is acceptable. A larger screen may have shown some pixellation. If you have big fingers, I would advise a capacitive stylus, as the keyboard is small even on landscape mode. The pre installed Quick office is a bonus & ebooks are quite readable. Samsung have launched it here as the Galaxy Y Young. See my previous post 2 days ago, just before purchase.
