you can't disable the gprs there is on special setting for that but you can do one thing by creating a dummy apn so it won't connect to anything.
yes you can set message tone.
well i think your battery is dieing cos of many task running in back ground use some task killer available in market.and put brightness to min. i get my battery for 36 to 48hrs

FOr your issues 1,2 & 3,Pl download APNdroid widget from the "Market" and switch on the GPRS/Edge/3G data on a need basis.
For SMS,Pl download Handcent applicaton from Market.
It offers you csutomizations which beynd our usual handset SMA application
FOr creatting the bckup,creata backfrom your Nokicak pone through Bluetooth/USB cable to VCF or Outllok format and with Samsung Kies you can upload all your contacts this phone.

i have just bought my new samsung galaxy 3 i.e GT i5800 few days back for 12000 Rupees
its amazing fully loaded of features at such a low cost.. and that too android 2.1
but i have some queries and problems regarding my phone..
1) It automatically connects to the internet i.e EDGE SERVICE is automatically ON..
how to disable it..??
2) Is there any way to disconnect the data service..???
3) In the reviews it shows 15 hours of talktime..
but its really really very poor...
the battery drains out very soon
i charge my phone twice a day... :(
is there any way to increase its battery backup...???
4) Is there any way to get my contacts and messages transferred from my old
Nokia 3500c Phone..???
5) Can we create new profiles in Samsung Galaxy i5801 like we can do it in Nokia..
coz here it only shows silent and flight mode..
can we create new profiles..??
6) Also can we change the message tone to what we wish to have,
i can only change the ringtone of voice calls
is there any method to change the ringtone for messages too..??

just ordered this fone frm flipkart.com at rs 11901(free shipping and incl. of all taxes)..i think this is the cheapest you can get it..i live in delhi..

I would like to know whether samsung will update this to Android 2.2 Froyo within a specific period. I am interested in this phone but only if samsung confirms their plan to update to froyo shortly

Close your eyes and buy this phone. I was using his bro, Galaxy Spica, an amazing phone it was. Android market is like an ocean. you think about a feature/app, it is available there, online TV, Metal Ditector, Internet Radio etc etc... I am using Wave now.BADA apps are still to grow.

I may not be able to comment much on the other phones,but if you need a integrated/multitaking environ for a ecent quality of Browser/Music player/Camera ,this you should go for this phone.
I see this phone as a phone with verage HW capability(3MP AF camera,256 RAM,667MhZ) etc with very power SOftware running on it.The beatuty of Android comes from 1.THe Thousands of applications available on it 2.You capability to combine the tools to have integrates environment.(like CTQ Scheduler with a Airplane mode off onwidget- )
If yourapprehenion of how difficult to use a android phone tansitioning from a normal phone,you may find it bit strange/difficult.But once you master ,you WILL LOVE IT!!

i have just bought this phone .. and its preety awesome.good speed,GREATEST android (cant take off my eyes). fantastic video playing.poor camera.good speed.large number of apps supported on droid mkt.good call quality.
Now i have 1 Q. phone running great. but Samsung Kies can not detect when I connect it to usb choosing samsung kies. plz help.
