I've had my 8510 almost a week now having coming off an Sony-Ericsson W810i, which is still a damn fine phone, albeit a couple of years old. The 8510 is slowly losing my favour, with its slow to respond interface and painful texting - when you're texting and there are several possibilities for the key combo you're using (e.g. sorting/posting/porting) you have to press the * (discovered that through trial an error - the manual is sooo crap). The Sony provides a drop down selection list of possible words which is much nicer.
The 8510 has locked several times and I have been very frustrated on many occasions having to wait for it catch up. The Sony is extremely responsive, the 8510 isn't. The Samsung tutorial video shows widgets, I have not been able to find out how you use these - I am on Orange, it may be service provider specific. The Quick office application that appears to be on the phone isn't - you are expected to buy the licence for it, I am not impressed! Route 66 does not have UK maps - guess what you have to buy those as well. Music quality is nowhere near as good as the Sony - tried both with my Sennheiser earphones which sound amazing on the Sony but dull and empty on the 8510 despite experimenting with the various equaliser settings. The speakers are on the back of the phone so you'd think it would be sensible to turn it face down so you can here the music better. Guess what? When you do this it stops playing?? The PC studio software used to synch with Outlook - appointments, contacts etc is very flakey - it took many attemtps to get it to work and even then it was not picking up all appointments - very annoying. I do like the way the calendar provides hover text when you select each day from the month view, that works well. I would like more control on waht gets displayed on the standby screen - it's not very useful the way it displays notes before appointments.
Build quality is very good, it feels solid and like a quality item. With the slider up though, I do struggle to reach everything I need to with one hand/thumb. Screen is excellent, once you load a decent them to bring it to life it looks very cool - Night Wind by boroda1 looks great. I persevered with the optical thumb cursor but gave up as it isjust very annoying!
GPS seems a bit hot and miss as well - not convinced it works well.
It's got the makings of a wonderful device, however in terms of practicality and in particular texting, the Sony wins hands down. The 8510 has driven me to distraction with its slowness and so on, my Sony may not be out of a job just yet. Potentially 9/10 but gets only 7/10 from me, I am hoping for a firmware upgrade to improve things.
There are numerous settings where a decent manual is needed to explain what goes where - e.g. IM - how do you set that up? And all the other apps as well need configuring, shame on Samsung for not providing proper and thorough documentation.
Would I recommend you buy one? Not really, I would wait awhile and see what happens.
realy great camera phone. in portugal 729€
is this a touch phone?
Now this is what I am talking about, Samsung is injecting its audio and imaging technology with thier phone such as camera modules and audio chips (DNSe) in which walkmans is no where to be found. It is a matter of time and now samsung is very successful in what they are doing without any rush. I mean that Samsung technology is equal or even superior than SE. Sorry SE fans but this is the truth, so bye bye walkmans which I really do not have any confidence because of its commmercial jokes.
Does any one knows what is push email? in samsung i8510? is this means same function as black berry? kindly guide.
Anonymous, 26 Sep 2008I still prefer c905. I believe more in SE than SamsungThen, that is your loss. SE is good but they are lagging behind with the rest. C705 has no fight with the other 8 megapixal camera. Absolutely no fight.
