If you send a text from your wifes Nokia that is longer than 160 characters it will split it and send it as multiple texts. Unfortunately Android doesn't do this, but sends it as a MMS.
So, if I send a long text that runs to 650 characters on my SGS I will be charged an additional £1.24! Sending the same text from my Nokia N8 will just result in having four texts deducted from my unlimited text allowance.
All the best.

I just borrowed my wife's Nokia 6303 ( yeah, I know, but she wont use anything else ), and guess what? The SMS Messaging has a 160 character limit on it. Oh, she bought the phone 6 months ago, so it's a recent model.

So if you wanted to call someone it would cost an arm and a leg, thus the text message was devised. You could send a quick short message for just a few pence. However, times have changed and contracts now include very generous allowances for calling people so SMS has to evolve to allow people to send long text messages if they wish without being penalised for doing so, such as you can within the Symbian environment.
It's basically just a simple matter for Google to change a bit of code in Android so the message gets split rather than be converted into a MMS.

You have to remember what the acronym SMS stands for - it's 'Short Message Service'. It was never intended to send messages of 480 characters like the other 'poster' wants.
I downloaded Handcent to try out as users on other Forums have suggested that it does not carry the 160 limit, and it is true. You can adjust it in the Settings menu and type any length message and Hancent converts it into 160 length messages and sends them as SMS. That seems the only way to do it though.

Same thing happened to me a while back when sending a long joke to a few friends. There are not any settings you can change in the phone to prevent this from happening, so the only solution is to install a third party SMS app from the market which will send the text as 3 separate sms's and not a MMS.
I personally consider this to be a bug in Android because it is not acceptable to be charged money for sending long texts when you have generous SMS allowances.
Other OS's don't do it, such as Symbian, so why does Android?
In answer to the guy who said to call the person instead, that really isn't very helpful at all, considering there are some situations where a phone call isn't convenient so only a text message will do.
