With respect to your phone's usability in the Philippines, I'm pretty sure that it will work here (given that it is the international/sim-free version). The drivers included in the firmwares for the international version usually cover (almost) everything.
mark gil, 05 Apr 2011hello.. i bought my sgs here in korea, the characters are limitted to 80 char only. if it is e... moreI'm not sure about the setup in Korea but do other phones there have the same setup? After 80 characters it goes to two sms? I used to experience this from time to time when I send text messages to other networks (mine is Globe) but the problem seems to be sporadic and I just ignored it. As a note, I only experienced this when my firmware was still the original one (DX---, i.e. DXJPE).
The only method that I can think of to fix your problem is to do a factory reset first. If this doesn't work (and chances are it won't), then a solution is to flash another firmware into your galaxy s - given that the pre-requisites are there (international/sim-free version, download/recovery mode works). This is a bit over the top, to be honest with you, but when I flashed the European firmwares to my phone (XWJS5, XWJS7, XWJS8 and XXJVK), I no longer experienced this 80-character thing.
Perhaps one thing that you can also try (which i think should be the first attempt in solving your problem) is to install an alternative sms client. In particular, you can use "GO SMS Pro". Just download this from the Android Market (its completely free) and have a go at it. If the problem won't go away with this, and if it is not a network related thing, then you can do the above items. You can also visit the website of xda developers as the experts are there.
I hope the above helps. :)
