I know a lot of people are going to want to stab me in the face with a rusty screwdriver, but I must advise people against this phone very much.
Okay, so it has its good points. The best obviously being that gorgeous screen. There is nothing, hands down, that I've ever used that beats it. It's so bright and clear, the colours are beautiful. In fact, it can sometimes be too bright especially if it's a little dark. It's also a really nice size, good for movie or document viewing.
Now for me, the dimensions of the device are...How shall we put it? A double edge sword. Sure, its nice to have an uber thing sexy little phone. But personally, I found the ridiculous thickness rather off-putting. It seemed flimsy. Doesn't help that the plastic build gave a little after a couple of weeks and the phone seemed to warp ever so slightly when you clutched it too hard. While obviously I'm not going to grip it like I'm choking someone, its still rather disconcerting. Additionally, the glossy plastic build feels so...tacky. Come on guys, this phone is £400 or more and it feels no better, and I mean literally NO better than a £50 Tocco lite. Where's the luxury! Where's the beautiful build quality. Point to HTC here by FAR.
On to software. Now you'd think that it would be super fast, dandy and excellent what with that great processor. Sorry to say, this thing lags like hell. I had to wait nearly two minutes to open the bloody menu at one point. It wasn't even anywhere near start up point. The phone has horrible lag issues. Now I don't really mind if I can predict where the issues come from (unless of course its really bulk standard operation that causes it) but it was so unpredictable.
Wifi dropped out regularly, and neither data method worked that often. It would freeze the phone trying to download from the market. Disappointing man. Not only that, but every android phone I have ever owned was able to recognise playlists transferred to a phone in a pretty standard playlist file. not this one. nope, had to be done via the Samsung software. the ONE time we got the software to work, it didnt transfer. Sloppy sloppy sloppy.
And that brings me to the biggest annoyance BY A MILE. The software. We were due to get the 2.2 update pretty soon, the phone was unlocked and as such it didn't have to wait till network subsidy. Well, big problem. The PC suite never, ever worked barring one time. We tried it on a million different PC's, tried different cables, reset the phone at least 6 times. Nothing. Phoned samsung, they have no idea either. its a big problem too, people littering the internet are complaining about this.
I want to like this phone. I want this to be a great contender for the likes of the iPhone. But it simply isn't. On paper, it almost completely hammer's the Applegasm phone but...Sadly, iPhones just work. Equally sadly, this just doesn't.
Shiva or Paul or any1 else help me....

I wish I could, but that plastic body really feels so cheap! Even some mid rangers like the moto quench feel better built.
Hello Paul and Shiva,
Pls comment on the following queries.
1)Whenever i try to send a large SMS, phone automatically convert it to MMS(which is costly). Is there any setting/application by which we can send normal text message as SMS(irrespective of its size). However in previous phone I can send any length of text message as SMS.
2)The audio quality of the headphone set provided with this phone is irritating. It seems as the due to 5.1 channel effect the audio quality degraded. Can you confirm that this is also a problem in your headphones , or else there is something wrong with the headphone I received with this set.
I also like to thank, you both as based on your comments/feedback I finally purchased this set.
Which is amazing, except a few small issues, but I think each phone has some or other problem, and if we compare SGS is far better than others.
TC, 24 Oct 2010N8 is NOT a great phone, and fact is that N8 often crashes and it can not show webpages correc... moreI have gone through Andriod (Sony x10) and iPhone 4 and they both are very bad for business integration. The droid works well with google apps best, and the iphone is a totally closed system that relys on itunes for everything. The N8 has personality. While every other machine is running Android or the closed circuit iphone, the Symbian3^ is definitely in a league of its own, droids and iOS notwithstanding. It is light on battery and memory, has the best camera that matches any current point and shoot, and has classy integration with Outlook. Symbian Rules!!
A lot of people are complaining about lags... At which point do you experience these lags???
TC, the bottom line is a phone is still just phone, there is no point bashing bout other phones and promoting your own cause different people have different requirements. An amateur photographer and media junkie might find the n8 interesting while hardcore smartphone users and mobile gamers will choose the galaxy s. So thats the end of that. Peace?
TC, 24 Oct 2010The problems with N8 is not only Symbian, but even the hardware sucks because it only have 256... moreMy n8 work fine with no crashes whatsoever, Symbian is a lite os and does not need a very fast cpu and a ton of ram. I know that your assumption on the symbian^3 performance is based on the s60v5 performance (which i also admit was crap). Symbian^3 is totally refurbished. Is its now better to use and much more smoother than the previous version. The 360X640 resolution provides a 16:9 ratio which is perfect for viewing videos without the black lines on the top and the bottom of the screen. To a normal person a nHD resolution (360X640) compared to a WVGA resolution wont make much difference. And not all homes are equipped with DLNA mind you so cable remains the best choice
