The problem with these brands is this:
"Planned obsolescence or built-in obsolescence in industrial design is a policy of planning or designing a product with a limited useful life, so it will become obsolete, that is, unfashionable or no longer functional after a certain period of time. The rationale behind the strategy is to generate long-term sales volume by reducing the time between repeat purchases, (referred to as shortening the replacement cycle).
Firms that pursue this strategy believe that the additional sales revenue it creates more than offsets the additional costs of research and development and opportunity costs of existing product line cannibalization.
Planned obsolescence tends to work best when a producer has at least an oligopoly. Before introducing a planned obsolescence, the producer has to know that the consumer is at least somewhat likely to buy a replacement from them. In these cases of planned obsolescence, there is an information asymmetry between the producer – who knows how long the product was designed to last – and the consumer, who does not."
food for thought...

Anonymous, 25 Jul 2014what is the best update 4.1.2 or 4.3?For the SIII 4.1.2
[deleted post]Don't waste your time with this guy. I'm guessing he bought a S3 just this year and now is vigorously defending his purchase.
It was a great phone in 2012, and ok phone in 2013, but it's 2014 now. It can still hold it's own (somewhat) to 2014 mid-rangers but fact is I'd still rather have a 2014 mid-ranger over a 2012 flagship just because 99% of the time, newer is in fact better, and buying a 2014 phone in 2014 lets you enjoy the phone for the duration of its lifecycle from start to finish VS buying a 2012 flagship in 2014 only to find out the manufacturer has ceased support and future updates such as the case with the S3.

The current price of a S3 is around £239. I purchased my Nexus 5 for £240, so the price is about the same.
The Nexus 5 blows my S3 away in performance.
I have 1.30Gb of Free RAM on my N5, the S3 has 185Mb.
The N5 runs on Vanilla Android, the S3 has that awful memory sucking Touchwiz. Every app opens INSTANTLY on my N5, while I have to wait on the S3.
The camera on the N5 is now superior to the Samsung because Google update it.
While we are on updates, the N5 is running Android 4.4.4 - What is your S3 running on? Will it ever get a Firmware update? NO, because Samsung has deserted that model.
Will my N5 get Android 4.5 when it is released soon? Yes, like everything else on that phone -INSTANTLY.
I appreciate your loyalty to the S3, but it is over 2 years old now and it shows.

There is NO better for for the price that S3 sells today, not even close, and S3 is much better in many ways, especially ergonomically, screen quality, sound quality, than most new "flagship" phones.

It's to let people that looking to buy a smart phone now know that the SIII is not the big deal it was 1 year ago. It is good enough for the people that already have it and don't want to upgrade but is a waste of time to buy NEW now.
