Samsung Android Firmware updates

After Samsung's Experience UI 9.0 update for the S8 and S8+ was put on a brief hold, the company releases the full list of changes to the UI.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ were both being updated with Android Oreo 8.0 when the OTA was momentarily pulled. Now that the update has been rolling back out for a few days, Samsung is releasing the full list of changes for Samsung Experience UI 9.0.

This list of changes applies specifically to the Samsung Galaxy S8 powered by Samusng's own Exynos 8895. More specifically, this applies to the International Unlocked SM-G950F model.

  • Apps of notifications that aren't visible will overflow to the bottom of the notification panel

Home Screen

Samsung Keyboard

  • Toolbar offers shortcuts to useful functions
  • New GIF Keyboard
  • More high-contrast styles are available

Performance

  • Background services are limited to optimize battery life and performance
  • Currently running apps will always be shown in the notification panel

Edge Screen

  • Improved overall visibility with font, color, and new settings
  • Touch and hold edge panel to change its location
  • Added 3 more edge lighting options

  • New clock styles for both
  • Adjust transparency of notifications

Smart View

  • Let phone's screen turn off while mirroring

Samsung Account

  • Control account settings and profile info for a bunch of Samsung apps
  • Tap profile icon in Settings to access profile info and account settings

Samsung Cloud

  • View and manage photos stored solely in Samsung Cloud
  • Store all kinds of file types in Samsung Cloud Drive
  • Select which items to delete or restore from Cloud Backups
  • See backup size and how many items it has

Samsung Dual Messenger

  • Install a second copy of any messaging app so you can use two accounts at once
  • Tap and hold a messaging app on the Home or App Screen to install the second account

Find my mobile

  • Back up Secure Folder to Samsung Cloud remotely if your phone is lost
  • Lock Samsung Pass using Find My Mobile

Samsung DeX

  • See more apps by changing the app list view to full-screen
  • Use Game launcher in DeX to play a game in full-screen
  • Added support for LED View Cover and Clear View Standing Cover

Other Improvements

  • Bluetooth supports HQ audio codecs like AAC and Sony LDAC
  • Video player has auto repeat and 2x speed option
  • Voice recorder has smart tips to clock calls while recording
  • Email lets you flag Microsoft Exchange emails
  • Samsung Health now comes with a permanent notification for step-count view
  • Clock includes a Landscape mode and new sound options for the timer
  • Digital clock widget is now a shortcut to the Clock app
  • Adds Samsung Pass ability to manage usernames and passwords in third-party apps (Basically Google's Smart Lock, but by Samsung)

There are many changes on this list. This shows the amount of work that went into a major update bringing the Galaxy S8 and S8+ from Android Nougat 7.0 (yeah, the first version of Nougat) to Android 8.0. Have you gotten the update yet and are you enjoying the changes so far?
